The ants go marching

Our garden in Vadodara is full of time-pass delights. These red ants occupy me for long periods of time every morning when its still cool enough to sit outside and drink a cup of tea.

The minute you leave a crumb of food somewhere, they arrive in droves. You'd almost think they have hidden networks of SCADA everywhere. Not only are they fast but they seem to have street smarts. If I as much as create a minor vibration in their vicinity - either by thumping a foot or dropping a piece of food - they scatter in multiple directions randomly. And if no other danger can be sensed within the next 10 seconds, they're back!
