Indian Idol 3: A host like a dost

There is one thing (among others) Indian Idol has going for it – and that is one of its two hosts Mini Mathur. Mathur is fabulous, handling all the verbal struts and jhatkas required on Idol with an ease that doesn’t look forced.

She plays big sister to the girls and boys and often handles the most awkward part of the competition – the kiss-off – without inducing too many cringes. She doesn't get intimidated by the judges and often cuts them short to maintain control of the show (Aditya Narayan on SRGMP, are you watching and taking notes?) Twice she has even gone after the judges for pussy-footing around with their comments.

And here is what I like about her cohost Hussain who seems to have an innate understanding that Mini powers the show. Too often I see men try to get one up on their female cohosts. (Anyone watch Sachin trying to get in front of just about anyone who cohosts with him on Antakshari?) Hussain on the other hand suffers from no such patriarchal malaise. Well done.

Indeed, I have now watched more TV between these two shows in a season than I've watched in the last 10 years of my life. But you know a DVR helps.

Thanks, and drop me a line if you find something interesting here, Priya.
