Sa Re Ga Ma Pa - The Vishal-Shekhar special

Last week's SRGMP was themed around Vishal-Shekhar's tunes. And it was easily the best episode I've seen since Ashaji left leaving a trial of spunky, husky women in her wake.

And the reason was obvious on the show itself: V-S really enjoy their music - it's in their eyes, their body language and the way they light up whenever someone performs well.

This was infectious - not only did The Reshammiya (fast becoming the Imelda Marcos of caps) himself do head bobs galore but I might even have seen Khayyam tilt his head a bit - an event of seismic significance. Bappi broke out into song several times. Some judges - clearly smarting around Abhijit's recent hysterical attack - praised the show to the skies. A lovefest gigante ensued and lasted the length of the show.

The judges, however, ended up in Ashaji territory. In other words, their choices confounded me. They ignored Sumana Ganguly's tight rendition of "Tinka Tinka", turned their face on Sikander's lilting version of "Mushi Mushi" and chose to devalue Raja Hasan's reveletory singing. Instead they put two wobbly contenders from Himesh's "Rock" gharana in the next round. Rajesh Roshan, warm and cuddly you may be, but you aren't doing justice to this talent. And Khayyamji, please - wake up!

At the end of it, I would have loved to hear more than just "Tinka Tinka" from what I consider to be V-S's best work to date - Karam. But seriously, who would want to take on Pankaj Awasthi's nuclear powered voice on "Tera hi karam"? I don't blame anyone but V-S for such complex, wonderful compositions.

Thanks VC for the correction

The true stars of SRGMP are Shekhar-Vishal. I watched their love-fest with delight and even tears. I love their connection with each other (soul-mates?) and like the fact that they are not afraid to speak up and disageee with the biggest of the maha-gurus. I think I am turning into a full fledged fan of this couple. I would love to learn more about them. Aspi, how about blogging about them, their lives, their work and most of all their partnership?
