Indian Idol 3: Gala Round

Indian Idol 3 has now reached the gala round. This has triggered several things: (a) the judges went crazy ass bananas ripping the contestants to shreds (b) the contestants are in full-on competitive mode and (c) everyone looks furtive and worried.

In the earlier rounds, when Smita Adhikari found herself in the uh, "danger zone", she was asked why she ended up there. And it was singularly devastating to hear her tearfully say that it was because she didn't look good enough. When Anu Malek called her personality "depressive" it was the one time I felt like giving him that old Bollywood classic - one tight chata.

Now there has been some bad singing in the galas (compare for example Prashant Tamang's solid "Yeh Hosla" from Dor to Amanat Ali's terrific version on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007) but sometimes you get the feeling the judges are listening to some other soundtrack. In fact, even Anu and Alisha seem to be listening to different shows.

Back to the gala: I'm quite enjoying watching how the contestants react when someone from their midst is singing. Especially someone who they consider to be a threat. For example, much head-shaking from the gang when Ankita is doing her thing (I'm glad she is around). Or Emon keeping a close eye on the judges whenever Prashant is singing. Or the hyper-competitive Deepali keeping tabs on everyone (her envious look at Ankita's prancing was particularly interesting to note).

We've now seen the backs of two girls. After taking flak from Javed Akhtar for sounding too childlike, Richa Aneja got eliminated, couldn't bring herself to sing after her vote-off and engineered a four-hanky tearjerker of an exit. Javedbhai sobbed. Revenge of the bacchi!

Jolly Das - after taking an equal amount of biased flak from Alisha Chinai - was also eliminated. Which wasn't a surprise given that she had limited opportunity to build history with the viewers.

So who still sounds good? Deepali, ever reliable, sang shakily this week (even though the judges seem to like her better this time). Charu seems to have lost her confidence. Parleen is disintegrating fast. Abhishek is maddeningly inconsistent. Puja Chatterjee has bombed badly once. Ankita has always been a JLo-types and Meiyang Chang is rubbing up against the vocal limits of his talent (he is such a smart cookie though that he always seems to have a workaround).

The ones who always sound good to me are: Prashant Tamang, Amit Paul and Emon Chatterjee.

But yeh public hai - yeh sab jaanti hai.

You really believe what you see on Indian idol? It is all because of some crazy editing that we are shown the contestants looking jealous of each other whereas in reality it may not be so. They cut and paste scenes(distastefully) so that the drama of the show is maintained for gaining trps. Poor contestants may not even know that they are many times shown in poor light in the name of reality show. Bechari Richa was at the recieving in the episode when Ankita got selected in the wild card round, when the show directors made her (just a 16 yr old gitl) look like a vamp in one of those Ekta serials.

Anon, the body language is interesting and as long as it is not edited out of place should tell us how people are reacting.

In general, you are right about reality shows being staged much more than they should be.

And yes, I did notice that contestants were filmed and then the stuff shown at times which clearly made them uncomfortable.

~mm~ good vote! I'll pay half your SMS bill :)

A funny editing incident was pointed out to me in this past gala by a friend - directly following Chang's performance, the judges are giving him comments and the camera cuts to a shot of the contestants observing the scene. And who's sitting in the middle? Chang! Funny how he's in two places in once, eh?

That being said, I agree with Aspi in that there is definitely an evident tense-ness that can be seen in the contestants when they are being judged.

i like Udit's comment

"bulldojer bhi hai ..."

That is Udit's accent. not bulldozer.

10 points to Aspi for not missing those minute details.

this is what makes your blog, so fun to read.

Aspi said...

And I love Udit's accent! In fact, its the main reason I listen to that terrible song from Partner all the time.

I feel Smita will be out this week.

AspiUncle, how about a blog on Harry Potter.

I will then enjoy this blog as much as mom.

Rupal, this mother-son thing is quite cute.

Jeet, unfortunately I'm not much of a Harry Potter fan but I'll be happy to dig into it and see what I come up with. I have a 8 year old too so there should be something I can do for you. Let me know what else you are interested in as well.

what's wrong with the words - "depressive personality" ? Is this wrong english ? can't understand why...

Aspi said...

Vivek, my comment about Anu was more general than just those words, but I can see how the sentence was constructed poorly enough to sound unfair.

Thanks for pointing it out. I've fixed the post.

Baised People on Sept 15 Show

I am shocked to see the biasness of Mini, JA and Alisha today. I like both singers but how can the judge can be biased like that. It's totally unfair for Prashant.Amit has been signing great after wild card entry. But Prashant is also performing and singing well and proved today that he is a competitor and friend to Amit. God help their friendship but i hate judges for being baised. How can this Mini to take aside like that ... stop the judge while commenting on performance.. Moreove Bipasha and her mum is there to make publicity... Ppl need to be wise when they have become celebrity. they can't act foolish and they won't look nice trying to look cutsy and biased at the same time. She is no good for me anymore..I believe she lost so much of fan following from today..disgusted by her immaturity..whoever they are. whether jugdes

Who Himesh thinks he is? Since when does he call the shots? I'm very disappointed that the other judges actually listen to him. Raja is the best. Why the terrible comments? Himesh is disgusting ,annoying and irritating.Anyway, Poonam is already the winner (amongst the females). Before I forget what's with the cap Himesh? Something to hide?Himesh, these challengers need the judges support so if you need to 'jack' them do in behind closed doors and not in front of ordiances. Put yourself in their position. They are doing a FUN-tastic job. There hasto be one winner so let the world vote as you degrade some challengers and promote YOUR favorites. Judges DON'T listen to Himesh - he only human like us all. (South Africa)

Who's this nut called Himesh ? Winter Spring Summer or Fall ,he's got that silly baseball cap on. Is he baldy ?
What the hell does he sing ?

One voice .One tone.One range.
Monotonous drone.

All 13 contestants of Indian Idol sang better than him. By the way , does he speak in English ? or Hinglish ?[that's hindi inglish]

Terrible.

Emon was excellent ...BUT...that Sonu Nigam fairy let him down . Why is Emon so crazy about Sonu ? Emon miscalculated there. Feel sorry for him cos I always liked Emon's singing....although he did not have what is called " vocal depth".
Special good wishes to Emon from us.

Little girl , Ankita , do some homework. " Nautanki" is for the buffalos, you were good BUT " Nautanki" is for brick layers .

Dr.Chang ? You got freaked out on that female judge , but the female judge was having wet dreams over Amit.

Prashant ? the most courageous singer we have all ever witnessed . Congratulations.

Amit Paul , why let some aged crone for a judge distract you to failure ? You had everything going for you - until - you forgot your real mission in the Programe , didn't do much homework.
Anyway, you were very good too.
