Indian Idol 3 Gala - Pretenders and Contenders

It's never good news for a show struggling for good singers like II3 to end up with three of its vocal luminaries in the bottom three. And the prospect of losing one for sure made everyone jittery this week - most of all host Mini Mathur who looked anxious, became snippy and looked ready to fall apart as she crossed her fingers for the unlucky name to be announced.

And that Chang caught the rough end of the voting is just another result because we are at a point where someone has to go and the judges have been drumming up Amit Paul and Emon as the two most talented contestants for weeks now. But the fact that he left before Ankita and maybe even Prashant might cause some to gnash their teeth. Speaking of which, Prashant continues to surprise me - he's still the only contestant who's never been in any kind of danger. Guess he does have an army of voters punching SMS short codes for him.

And before I go on to make fun of Alisha - her taking care of Chang touched me. If I was picking a team, I'd definitely want her on mine. But hey, at least we won't have to hear her "Chingu Mingu" anymore - which always somehow conjured up visions of a dancing monkey for me.

The evolution of Javed Akhtar as a judge on II3 has been noteworthy to watch. I'll start by saying I'm not a big fan - perhaps even envious of all the attention he gets. Hey, the last time I tried wearing a kurta and slung a bagalthela on my shoulder, the men laughed and the women rolled their eyes. Maybe its the Shabana Azmi halo that does the trick for him.

In any case, early on during the auditions, I would amuse myself by noting that Javed was a little too eager to give yellow passes to the girls. Later, with Anu Malik absent, he was the voice of reason as his co-judges Alisha and Udit went bananas praising anyone who as much as opened their mouth. His honest dressing down of a certain aspiring rock star had me jumping up in my seat and clapping. When Anu returned, Javed bid adieu to common sense and got to work on some solid chamchaagiri of the Mali.

None of this I mind. But when - without provocation - he chose to take what I thought was a rather nasty potshot at resident teddy bear Udit Narayan, it annoyed me no end. Fine Javedbhai - tell us about good singing. What would a premier singer like Udit know anyway? But I'm warning you, one of these days that guy is going to stop laughing and go postal.

So what was the momentum for the rest like on II3? Prashant is finding out that a voice like honey isn't enough to keep him out of trouble. His performance in the disco round, riding on the back of a poor song choice, sounded sweet but was very ordinary. Ankita's vocal nakhras on "Aap Jaisa Koi" (which I've come to hate as a song) sounded good to me. Amit put in his best singing in weeks and sounded close to peak form but Emon took a bit of a blow - choosing a terrific song but letting his voice dip into "Ek Chaturnaar" territory.

I now realise how people can get so blind when they fall in love, or infatuation. Alisha seemed so shocked when she realised that it was Chang and not Amit who got out.....Cmon Alisha.......Chang is a very cute guy, but he is definitely not as good a singer as Amit....Of course he is certain to win if he goes in for a 'Well Baby contest'...I for one will surely vote for him....

Hello Aspi,
I always enjoy your comments but on this one I would like add something to it.
1. Prasant is great singer, Javed Akthar he hates Prasant, I don't know whether you guys noticed or not but he always try to find flaws on his singing, no matter how good he sings not upto the mark for Javed, whereas Amit forget his lines most of the time but nobody notice him WHY? Amit and Emon is over publisize by SONY and Judges, all the contestant are equally talented. Javed Aktar's Idol is Amit, Alisha's is Chang Udit Narayan's is Ankita,Prasant's is Janta's IDOL.

Anu, no question about it: Prashant doesn't get the credit he deserves and his flaws are pointed out more mercilessly than Amit and Emons. And I think Udit was trying to head in that direction before he suffered that smackdown at the hands of Javed Akhtar.

Udit disappearing under the table was completely surreal...! Was it some kind of one-second sit-down protest?!

I've never warmed to Chang (altho I'll admit his last 2 performances have been quite good), but I was shocked to see him go before Prashant and Ankita, and even Emon (the lithp is starting to annoy me with the latter)... Amit in the bottom 3 = probably down to a bit of apathy amongst fans...I'll eat my hat if he goes out next week.

Alisha out on the lawn crying, Udit under the table...these are II3 judges????
I understand they are human, but can they please be mindful of their role on the show? They are not moms of the contestants, they are not cheerleaders, but are supposed to be objective judges.

Poor Udit, he was bullied under that table if you ask me :)

One thing is sure Janta doesn't care what judges say, because they all are emotional fools, they think their favs should win, they don't care about SUR. Javed was good before but now he is losing it, Udit is scared of Anu Mallik, Alisa if falling in love. I like Minni and Husain. Atleast they treat all contestant equally, as far as air time they have no control.

I was most surprised by Chang's reaction, to be honest. From the start, he's been the contestant that went on the audition 'on a dare', the contestant that didn't expect to make it past the theater, past the piano rounds, etc. etc. His apology to his papa, and his tears at being voted out, caught me totally off guard. I felt really bad for him. Was touched by Alisha's interaction with Chang though. I wonder if the contestants get more interaction with the judges than is typically shown.

And Ankita...? The less said about her, the better. Gr. I'm starting to have a real axe to grind with that girl.

ASPI,
I find your blog quite interesting, thinking to post regularly onwards.
Not being in INdia, I am not previllaged to vote in II3 but I am bit wondering how much voting are casting every week. In Saregamapa, Aditya is claiming that all contesdants got 21-lakh votes, but I never heard such data in II3.
Judges in Indian idol specially Javed and Anu Malik were not fair with Prashant before and Prashant had got advantages most from it. His fans took it seriously and may be voting him through out the nite many times. this is the reasons why this is still in top 4.
Or do you have any idea who are real vote bank for Prashant? Is it Indian army, police or Nepalese/Nepal origian people in India and abroad?

Only one good think is he can sing so well without any formal training, but at current form, he could not be the best or better than Amit. He still deserves third position in stead of Ankita. She was so besura, I do not know how the judges are praising her? I donot have much knowledge on Music or sur, But I still can catch her being flat every time. Judges and Indian jutas should know that II3 is not a plateform for Sex-appealing exhibition, it is plateform for prospective singers who have talents and sur.
Prashant is not best now, but I guess he can make a permanent place like Udit in hindi music if he goes some formal training. His voice still sounds very good for me.

God bless Music, talents and sur. Ankita is wrost one among four. Indian juntas, please vote out her next time.

Hey, even my wife complains about the picture I have on my blog!

Anon, I wish I knew more about voting patterns. As such all I've seen is mostly unscientific guessing and extrapolation from other polls on these shows.

The only hard data I have is our online poll which shows me votes by region. And from that I can tell you that Prashant hardly gets any votes from the US. Most of his votes come from Europe, North and East India and the Far East (HK, Singapore).

One friday, a few weeks ago, Head of SRGMP announced that the show had received 14 lakh votes over the week. The next day Hussain went on to claim that II3 received over 15 lakh votes in a 11 hour period. SRGMP now says aomething around 21 lakh votes. So II3 would claim 22 lakh votes.

First of all ASPI, I am talking about the picture with Gotie beard. You look really sexy, don't tell your wife? ha ha just kidding.

I don't think Amit is better than Prasant. Amit is better crowed pleaser that you can say, but vocal wise Prasant is lot better than Amit. He is camera shy but that does not mean he is less talented. He deserve to be Indian Idol.

Indian Janta's are not stupid, they know what is going on and I've realised they are very sensitive as well. As you know Nepal can't vote, majority of the votes coming from North East, and offcourse police force is there. they tried to make fun of INDIAN SIPAHI, that was total humiliation, he gets less air time, he should be getting equal air time, javed is always digging, he wants Amit to win. Prasant is next Indian IDOL no doubt about it. Reliance is charging Rs.3.50 per vote but that will not stop our Janta. If Prasant do not win that mean there is consipiracy in IDOL. Because everybody living overseas sending money for votes and no one can beat that.

OK Let me tell you guys I love Prasant, Amit, Emon, Ankita, Chang, Parleen, Abhishek, Deepali and Charu, love them all. I have no grudes for any one of them.they are all equally talented.and Judges needs to be fair and balance.

Hi Aspi
I love your drift. It is sad and the present line up in II3 speaks volumes about the music sense of average Indians. Ankita, if she can sing, frogs should sound melodious to the average listeners. Why Javed Saab is holding the torch for Ankita and bashes Emon & Amit at every opportunity baffles me. For Prashant it is clear that the entire Nepalese community from Nepal,Darjeeling, Assam ..whereever are rooting for him. But where are Ankita's vote coming from???..You have rightly said "Public sab Janti hai". Ankita will not even make the audition of Saregama /Voice of India

Bhumi said...

Simply SAD to see Chang go. I still think he has the most unique voice among the top 5 and should have won and I really do not understand the voters dimag. Deepali is far better then Ankita (I do like Ankita's courage, drive and confidence)and she got voted out and now Chang. I missed the Chang elimination episode and glad I did as i would have been little bit like Alisha :(. However it shouldnt be surprisin as last year Amey and Karunya were far better then Sandeep yet he won.

i love prashant and he has got unique voice than Amit. I think amit is over praised and prashant is given unfair treatment and at least i beleive prashant can do far better than amit
