The Rubaroo episode of Indian Idol which airs every Thursday has always come across to me as a forced show - an attempt to jostle for ratings and lure audiences to watch an additional night of programming. The initial goal - I'm sure - was nobler: expand the backdrop against which Indian Idol 3 operates by exploring the lives of the contestants. It's meant to be an opening act for the two shows - performance and results - that follow over the weekend. But its never quite hooked me in.
Ganesh Hegde - his dancing highness - on the other hand I have had much fun with. His album G was terrific - the most fun Michael Jackson never had. And so when he showed on Rubaroo, I kept watching instead of hitting the stop and delete button.
Why was G cool? He had a laid back sense of style that seemed unforced. He refused to chato anyone, focussing instead on casual conversation. He had an energy that diffused itself across all the contestants - they started the show looking like they were in a maatam and ended up in a free for all dance.
His advice to the contestants was pretty entertaining to watch. He taught Chang a move based on fitting a light bulb, opening a tap and snuffing out a beedi. Later he told Ankita to do her riyaaz along with her performance so she can figure out how to modulate her moves around her vocals.
His only blemish - he said mindblowing once. Tsk, tsk, any more and you'll be on the M-list, Ganesh.

Usually I can't follow your tv posts very well, but this one made me giggle just based on the first picture alone. I might have to try to find a scene or two of this one!
I loved his dilrooba.Guy looks cool in white. One glitch - the bulb, tap and beedi is something I have seen before.Done by Prabhu deva in a telugu film called 'santhosahm' in 2002.So Iam not sure if its original.
And then our very own mini looks totally ravishing. She's got a better stylist this season and must have been working out too.Great going gal.
Too bad I can't seem to find that Prabhudeva clip on YouTube.
Thanks my man. Knowing your disdain for roobaroo I had resigned myself to relishing the 'g' alone. He was so natural that i'll forgive the rapping.
I tried for that clip as well.No luck. But I remember watching this movie online, dont know where.
leera, anything for you. Yes, that rapping did have me cringing - but then which desi rapping doesn't.
Vishal can rap without sounding fobby..i just had to make that clear..
Uh-oh, sounds like Shekhar might have some competition.
Beth, just noticed your profile pix. Its terrific! Where'd you get that.
I think Ganesh sounds much better when he sings in Hindi. I must admit i enjoyed that episode, there was lot of energy he created on the stage. (and he has a cute dimple :b.
