Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2007: The World Championships of two nations

I must say the Indo-Pak bhaichara episode to mark the declaration of Independence touched me. And congratulations to the SRGMP producers for taking such a sensitive topic and side-stepping controversy by marking the celebration for both nations. I take back what I said at the end of this previous post: these guys are just better people than me.

There was an amusing moment early on when Head used guest Kapil Dev's presence to compare India's World Cup win with the SRGMP contest. Um, Head, as far as I can remember, Kapil's team didn't just play Indians and Pakistanis across four nations in the diaspora. Calling SRGMP a vishwayudh is a lot like referring to Major League Baseball as a World Championship.

The singing was entertaining as always, although Junaid Sheikh and Mauli Dave ran into rough ground. Now if they had put up their performances on say Indian Idol, Alisha would have compared them to some precious stone, Javedbhai would have issued one or two wahs, Udit would have predicted a spot in the last three and Anu Malik would have been good for at least one "mindblowing".

But coming as it did on SRGMP Junaid got reamed on the gurugraph. And Mauli got some daat from The House of Reshammiya who scolded: "What are you trying to prove? You should stick with your genre and be proud of it". Fine, then, Himanshu, you find a deshbhakti item number for the poor girl.

I thought the best performance of the shows came from Poonam, who sang Vande Matram from Anand Math with verve. Someone's gone to town with that girl. Her hair has been talked to and is behaving itself and she's stuck some colored contacts in her eyes. Hey, I've said so before: SRGMP always has more interesting makeovers.

Ok I hope someone noticed but Vishal was wearing a reefer shirt, yay made my day.
Now that's why they are always enjoying the music so darn much!!!

Raja's performance was Good , atleast worth mentioning in the article....i am sad since i thought the best performances were from Raja and Poonam.

Mohmad said...

Yeah , Raja Rocked the stage with " maa tuje salam " and the rock star vishal was so pumped , he came and performed live with raja on stage , not to mention - children in the audiance , they were delighted ....

Aspi said...

Anon & Mohmad, Raja was pretty good as always - I have to agree. I hope he finishes in the top 2 like he deserves to.

Leera, I not only noticed that but also remember that Junaid had once worn a hemp wristband. Hmmm.....

Hmmmmm indeed! I wonder how riyaaz must be going on in the Rock Gharana,
Sa-re-ga-ma-puff-puff-paaaaaasss.

thanks aspi , your comments made me feel little better

I noticed the reefer shirt too! Tchyeahh.

I also noticed that they made the poor Pakistani kids remove the word 'Pakistan' from their patriotic songs. Funny, that.

BTW - Aspi, being the gujju that you are, can you translate what Shekhar said to Mauli in Gujrati? In return, I can translate Kapil Dev's Punjabi for you, if you'd like!

Aspi said...

Sure Sania - translation: let's ask our gujju brothers to vote for you. Please vote for her everyone. (To Mauli) But don't abandon your style ok. If you sing outside your style, you won't get any votes.

i feel sorry for sumedha, the poor girl sings better, looks better, behaves better than shaakira and even her own mentor is not promoting her. i had a ray of hope when bappida waddled on stage after her performance, but then instead of asking bongs to vote for her [thats what i thought], he broke into a bong song himself!

& when joy went out, everyone was shown to be tearful, except shaakira. guilt maybe? :)

my current order - based on last 2-3 performances ..
Mussarat,Poonam,Aneek,Raja,Sumedha - the A team
Amanat, Junaid, Harpreet - the B team
Mauli - the C team

btw, apna vishal has been quoted in the last issue of india today that all these reality shows are crap and it is the last time he and shekhar are appearing on one. apparently once "the himesh" made everyone wait 2 hours on the sets and then famously remarked "star ke liye wait to karna hi padta hai" :):)

Poor Poonam, from a simple innocent lass, she is now made to look like a 'ghost' with her grey(or is it green) wide-eyed look. Its frightening.
And anything to say about the wardrobe of the Star Voice of Indian contestants........they look disgusting with those tights and short skirts.....and heavy makeup.I guess fashion designers dont realise that there is beauty in simplicity.

mou said...

poonam, aneek, raja are singing as the established performer. mauli isn't suitable in India

mou said...

raja, u r actually a master. jite raho bhai.

Aspi said...

clix, that expression "waddled" is such a tremendous description of Bappi's forays out of his chair. But Sumedha strikes me as a stereotypical popular high-school girl who isn't used to coming in second-best, especially to a bunch of "dehatis" like the rest of the singers. At least that is what is going on in my head and its great fun to watch.

Saritha is our resident expert on VoI, but I did see someone called Abhilasha sing in bicycle shorts - I thought that was fairly amusing.

clix said...

aspi, a very interesting observation about sumedha ... however, she comes from a place small enough to be the biggest dehati of all [now that abhijeet & joy have left] in the show :)

Jiya said...

re Sumedha- her handle 'Chhatisgarh ki barbie doll' is absolutely hilarious. Wrt the wardrobes of contestants on SRGMP and VOI, not much to choose between them I feel. Although on SRGMP the girls end up looking completely over the top and not the least bit glamorous. VOI is only slightly better.

sumedha is BY FAR the most gorgeous girl i've ever seen on any of these Indian singing shows...she is much, much better than Mauli singing and looks wise, althouygh Mauli is quite sexy at times as well. However, after listening to her esentially SCREAM the "Mast" song in her nasal voice, I'm kind of turned off by her voice. I fell in love with her voice when she sang 'Chaand Mera Dil' (which the judges didn't like) and got turned off with "Mast" (which the judges loved...WTF?). The funniest thing is the horny look of Frog (Bappi)'s face when his girls (Sexy Sumedha and Cute Mauli) are on stage. He always seems to have a big smile (while looking like an old pissed off guy with the other contestants), and is bobbing his head up and down like an idiot. Good times.

Thanks for reminding me of that dark dark moment in the history of megan's shekhar fantime..

I have suspended my fanbership for a few days now because he has disappointed me like hell. Pleading to the public in Gujjurati to vote for Suhitben (btw i gave her another name because i thought it would be an insult to Sanjaya being compared to her)...

WTF was he thinking?

Shekhar, Radhe from Tere Naam just called, he wants his insanity back..

Manish said...

I think its high time Saregamapa introduced subtitles on the show. With so much of Punjabi and Gujarati spoken on the show, that should be a very good idea.

There were so many references to "mothers" in the episode you would be forgiven if you thought it was a Mothers' Day Special. But then, motherland, isn't too different.

megan said...

all that talk of hemp makes me wanna go smoke a bowl

Aspi said...

canadian, wonderful observations about Bappi and his love for babycakes. Everyone should try Bappigazing in the next two shows.

Manish, really good idea if you ask me.

Megan :D. Shekhar just called - he wants his mighty aphrodite back. He's promised to behave himself.

Saritha said...

sania, can you pls translate what Kapil said to harpreet in Punjabi....I thought Punjabi was lot easier to understand than gujrati, but it was the other way round on the show....Ya phir Kapil was using thagda punjabi?

Manish said...

Megan,

Mauli is like a lil sister to Shekhar. A little bit of encouragement is expected from the Gujjubhai to his Gujjuben.

BTW, I don't think it is a good idea to be too rude to a potential sister-in-law.

Harsha said...

I wonder who all have been voting for Mauli. She has no singling skills and many good singers were voted out while she stays on !! She has been given many chances in past just based on her maiya maiya performance.I hope she gets voted out this week as it has been really unfair to keep her on for son long. Guys vote for her when she stands for some looks contest. Not this one, please.

Raja and Poonam sang well last week and Aneek was good too. Good luck to all (minus Mauli ofcourse).Sumedha ofcourse looks much better and sings better compared to mauli.

Harsha said...

I hardly see Bappi rating or commenting on singers any different from other judges. if other judges give 10, he gives 10. if they give 8, he gives 8. He lacks originality here. Clix's expression of Bappi waddling is hilarious. Once when Vishal - Shekhar gave Amanat 10 before he started singing, Bappi gave 10 to Raja before he started his song too !! I agree Bappi Da could have encouraged Sumedha after her attempt to sing such difficult song.

megan said...

well aspi, i am a tough cookie, i am gonna be holding out on the love UNTIL he starts behaving again. I am all for negative reenforcements.

on another note, i would PAY to watch Bling King Bappi play cricket. Specially the running between wickets.

Aspi said...

Waddling between wickets - indeed, good money would part my hands for that one.

Manish said...

Don't they use a heavy roller before the start of each innings?

Sania said...

Sure thing Saritha - not sure that Kapil's Punjabi was any more tagra than can be expected, although I guess Chandigarh Punjabi may be different than the Jalanderi that I'm so used to hearing. In any case, a direct translation follows:

Kapil: I think that everyone here won't understand what I'm going to ask you in Punjabi..
Harpreet: Yes sir
Kapil: When you came [on stage], you said that 'I'm not a desh bhagat (patriot)', why aren't you?
Harpreet: Sir the only reason I said that was that, we're not able to do anything.. it's easy to say that we are big patriots, but there people who came before us and did everything, [and are gone..]
K: When you said this, it struck me strongly, that..
H: No sir, I definitely am a patriot
K: .. you should never say such things. It is people just like us who are patriots - what other kind would there be?
H: of course, sir.
K: Secondly, I'll say this that, I left cricket a long time ago - where the heck did you play with me?
H: No sir, you came to ____ Stadium and Yogra sir was there too.
K: Then you must have been quite young!
H: No sir, not that young - it was about 4-5 years ago.
K: Ok...
H: It was a trial. I used to play cricket too and it was then. I ___ trophy.. yada yada..
K: You did a good thing by not playing cricket, beta - otherwise you have no idea what your state would be, don't even ask. (I think here, KD is saying cricket takes a lot out of you..). I'm happy that you started singing, put your heart into this, and be successful. 'Rab kare' that you recieve 'din dugni, raat chaugni' success (literal translation: May the lord make it so that you acheive two times the day and four times the night of success). And may you acheive victory/fame everywhere.
H: Thank you, sir. Thank you so much.

Sania said...

BTW - no thoughts on SRGMP removing the words Pakistan from the Pakistani contestants songs? Not trying to start a flame war here, just curious.

Saritha said...

Thanks sania.Esp loved ur effort to translate 'din dhugni raat chaugni' line too ha ha....I could understand the later part, but I was sure something bothered kapil initially,I just wanted to know that....hmm...now I know.

Didn't I hear Aamant sing 'Pak watan'?Other songs I dont remember.

Anyways,Congratulations and Best Wishes to all on 60 anniversary of Indian Independence Day And Pak Too.

Aspi said...

Harsh, I have to agree with you on how Bappi tends to use the gurugraph. He reminds me of the guy who used to copy the exam from my paper.

Sania, I think the producers took the conservative baichara approach, i.e. let's celebrate Pakistan's independence too but let's not get too enthu about it.

meg the spoiler said...

well wait til you hear this week's results

Harsha said...

Meg, I hope it is Mauli who moves out. Probable chances are of Mauli or Javed ( who is a good singer otherwise but not a good performance last week). What do u guys say?

Aspi said...

I've stayed away from all the spoilers so just a pure guess: it would have to be Junaid.
