Star Voice of India - the legend, the runner-up and the rookie

By Saritha

Sunidhi Chauhan is idolized by every contestant of any music show that dreams of making it big in the world of playback - just like Shahrukh Khan is idolized by every telly star who ever dreams of making it big in Bollywood.

Sunidhi’s evolution as a singer from a 12-year-old mast girl to a young lady musically lighting up a beedi and the stage, could well be a case-study for all the chora-choris on these shows. Her presence as a guest on VOI this Friday - predictably - made it a mast mahaul.

But on Saturday the second episode slipped a notch when the actors from Victoria 203 showed up as guests. I was not expecting a boring trio after such a roller-coaster ride. The episode, however, showcased what constructive criticism can do to a talented singer – both Priyani’s rendition of Lataji’s "Chad gayo paapi bichua" from Madhumati and Abhilasha's rendition of the raunchy "Mungda" came close to perfection.

Despite delivering fine performances, most of the contestants managed 8s and 9s unlike SRGMP where perfect points are doled out constantly.

VoI faces stiff competition from top-rated legend SRGMP and runner-up II3 - the former has some killer singers and the latter has stylish packaging. But VOI can still stay ahead in this game. Here's how:

Jimmy Shergill, Preeti Jhangiani and Sonia Mehra (who?) are not exactly the kind of guests one expects on this show – not right after Sunidhi. And some advice for Ms. Sonia – avoid red nail polish next time you are on national TV. It’s distracting!

How about Vishal Bharadwaj, Gulzaar saab , Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Shreya Goshal (SRGMP winner) or Usha Uthup as guests? Gajji, you've probably met a lot of them during your stint on SRGMP. Time to rekindle those contacts.

The rakshabandhan special with bhai and behens of the contestants and judges popping up throughout the show was touching, but most of it seemed forced. A refined portrayal of the maa-baap, bhai-behen, dosti-pyaar ke rishte is needed.

Not much is known about the contestants – like the age, hometown, hobbies, idols, and so forth. An index of contestants with pictures and the above details on the net will help people learn more about them. Market them.

Tone down the whole d├ęcor of the show. Less of flashy lights that hurts everyone's eyes - even if you are not paying a dime for power. Less flashy clothes – unless it’s a disco theme.

With a talent pool that can leave Indian Idol many laps behind and force SRGMP to take notice, VOI has potential to win the TRP race.

Ka Chow!

I am surprised that you find SRGMP's singers better than VoIs. I think VoI has wayyyy better singers than SRGMP. Also, I found VoI set less cheesy than SRGMP one. And I agree completely on your comments about judges. Gaji should bring in better judges and not some B-grade actors. Actually, I think it would have been better if Sonu and Sunidhi were in the episode where participants are rated instead of appearing in the episode where how they perform doesn't really count.

I will write a post which compares Raja Hasan's performance with Toshi and you will know what I am talking about. You can find videos of the latest VoI episodes at my site http://StarVoiceOfIndiaShow.com.

J,
Well I watch most of the episodes on your website. And I agree that VoI singers are pretty good, but not many seem to be noticing them.Good or bad,SRGMP has an edge over others in terms of viewership. How can one explain wonderful Arshpreet getting voted out so soon?

Manish said...

I just heared Toshi's Teri Deewani for the first time. And the similarities btween Raja Hasan and him are amazing - both from Rajasthan, similar looks, similar hair, similar struggle in Mumbai - and importantly the only two singers in all current contests who know how to improvise on original compositions.

And both are lambi race ke gode

I don't wanna watch VOI anymore now that Arshpreet is gone. She was the best thing about this show.

UGH

Harshit is good too i suppose.

Thanks J,for the link.Loved it.Toshi Vs Raja....wow,can't get any better....keep it up.

Meg,

Now that you are naaraz with Shekhar, why dont you join the party at VoI...It's fun.Arshpreet's gone but Harshit,Toshi,Abhaas,Priyani,Mirande are all very good.

You can always go back to SRGMP to watch those 'legs'on Lalu episode;-)

I must say I agree with Meg here. Arshpreet was much fun to watch and had a terrific voice. WTF happened there?

Meg said...

Problem was Ishmeet according to my mom, he got all the Punjabi votes or something.. also Punjabis aren't known for voting for their talented singers in these competitions. People from other parts of India are too busy voting for contestants of their own ethnicity to vote for the poor girl. If only people weren't ethnocentric. *sigh*

Arshpreet always went to the stage, sang well and then went back to her seat. She never tried to hog the limelight. That was a problem too.

It was heartbreaking to see her go. I am not a huge fan of any other contestants. The judges also annoy the eff out of me in VOI.

I like harshit, he sings really well.

Saritha said...

Megan,

I think ur mom's right. After watching SRGMP y'day,I realized that Harpreet is also from Ludhiana - the punjabi votes are then divided between Ishmeet and Harpreet leaving the poor girl behind.I hate to see average boys win over talented girls.

I dont expect either of these boys to win,but Iam sure Arshpreet can get lot of work b'coz of her
unique voice.Hope pritam keeps his promise.

For once I agree with Aadesh.Even when Pritam complimented her voice quality and promised to work with her,she just thanked him and left the stage. She didn't praise him or expresse her happiness. No nakhras or no nautanki.

I must say that I loved her father's composure and the way he consoled her at the end.Pa ji ,Tussi great ho.Like father, like daughter.

I liked Arshpreet too, came across as a simple no-nonsense girl with a cool voice. I liked the way Sunidhi brings energy to the show.
I don't know why the boys have to pull some stunts like giving flowers, kissing hands etc. makes me cringe to see the drama, scripted or not.To add to this pain, they open their mouths to make statements like 'i have to prove that i've grown up' YAKKK. And the judges just seem like some galli side romeos with their cheering and hai-hais. Same thing holds for SRGMP judges as well...whts with giving chummas and flying kisses (that too with ghutka/paan/supari/cud) in the mouth? Only a gajra wrapped to the hand is missing.Atleast V-S seem more civilized.-Ritha.

Aspi said...

Actually I felt Sunidhi was manhandled quite a bit on VoI. Especially the part where she was dragged on the stage and made to stand around and look awkward.

Pratik said...

I think SRGMP has proved to be a better platform for singers. The number of singing offers SRGMP participants have got is phenomenal. Also, the variety in terms of genres is ample in SRGMP due to influx of Pakistani singers.Aneek,Amanat,Sumedha,Mussarat stand out. I think Raja is a good star than a good singer. Also, the judges' behavior in SRGMP is better than that of VOI. Having said that, I like Irfan,Harshit and Sumitra in VOI.

Saritha said...

Pratik,

One factor that helps SRGMP is its popularity. We have known it for years now and it takes some time to think outside.Still,Iam hoping that one of these days VoI will strengthen its position in this race :-)

After Alka's return, the judges are are keeping the proceedings strictly to music and they are now better than an annoying Himesh.

The Toshi Kiss off was a real heartbreaking scene. Somehow Abhijeet did not seem to be the "thud class admi" our Bappida finds him to be..
Waiting for Aspis inimitable commentary on this tear jerker.
First Chang and then Toshi...don't tell me it would be aneek / raja next!!

Aspi said...

Saritha does our VoI commentary so she'll definitely have something to say this week!

And I forgot to say Abhijeet sang last week and sounded terrific. He has got to have one of the tuniest live voices I have heard.

What a great shock to see Toshi eliminated. Definitely the people of India had given a wrong decision. Please bring him back under any circumstance because VOI rocks due to his presence.
his well wishers in New Zealand are extremely disappointed. The VOI would be a montony to watch. WE WANT TOSHI BACK!!! He should be the VOI!!

All right! I'll throw one in for Arshpreet, the Jennifer Lopez of India.

And don't look at me like that - it makes as much sense as anything Bappi has thrown around.

Hey anyone not in favour of Toshis elimination than go to this wb site nd leave a comment for TOSHI!

The Toshi elimination was yet another lousy Gajendra gimmick. I can assure you, Toshi will be back on the show - Star Plus simply goes by the Ektaa Kapoor Reincarnation Manual.

I still cant come over the trauma that toshi is not in competition anymore ... how can you vote out such a wonderful singer... its so much not fair harshit doesn't has any competition anymore apart frm abhaas ... sincere request to svoi if you have done this to create sum craze among public guys it worked but now plz bring back toshi we indians are emotional fools and we get too attached to these reality shows ... guys throw a stone on a viewer and i can bet they wud stand tall that toshi is the best .. plz bring him back before we loose interest in watching the program ... we are loosing on the wonderful opportunity of listening to toshi's songs ...

Anonymous said...

LOL LmAo!!!! Thats soo cracked nd true! us emotional indians lol... YEA BRING TOSHI BACK

Anonymous said...

No doubt, VOI is the best show among all.Toshi's leaving is shocking. But it is a part of lief (game).i am agree that the showbazi like kissing, dancung etc. can damage a real singer.Amy way "AABHAS" is the best voice. He is so versatile that at one hand he can sing the new number like "Haseena maan Jayegi" and "OMKARA" and on the other Golden songs like "Hai Duniya Usiki", Nain Lad Jaiyen" and "AAKE SEEDHI LAGI DIL PE". Age doesn't matter, BEST is BEST. AABHAS will definatley be "VOI".

i am very sad that toshi has been voted out he sings very nicely he never sang bad,he always use to sing wonderful i wish toshi is back even judges were against the public voting he should be brought back.after him only irfan sings well others do not sing so nicely ,others have always got negative comments from judges i want toshi back

What Has been done to bring Toshi BacK?… NOTHING!!! People took time out to protest against the elimination in form of demonstrations nd sending emails. What did it materialise in???
NOTHING! seems to have fallen in deaf ears. How about the judges they said that they were gonna try their best to bring Toshi back so WHAT HAVE THEY DONE???? Seems its a whole lot f BULL CRAP!! There was a certain degree of assurance amongst peoples minds that the outcome of all protests would be very positive! What a DISGRACE to VOI’s team as they can’t keep their words. Utterly dissapointing but No comparison to the commedable efforts put in by INDIAN IDOLS TEAM TO GET THEIR STAR BACK THROUGH THE WILD CARD CATEGEORY

TOSHI ROCKS

Please get TOSHI BACK he was the only singer on VOI who had a great voice and extra ordinary talent. I was very disappointed by the comment made by Abhijeet when he sung SILI SILI it was the best performance i had ever seen so far on VOI. It was very emotional song. This nut Abhijeet who himself has no sense of singing and that's why he hardly gets any song these days. Toshi's singing is Impeccable, It is highly appreciated that he has never shown any soft corner of his life on VOI which shows that he is truly genuine human being. I don’t understand why peoples are still voting for that pune girl its is very disappointing to see her on VOI.

i want to tell that Toshi chala gaya ab use bhool jao aur prithvi k sher ko yaad karo Irfan .. Irfan i want u as a VOICE OF INDIA ....

Sudha said...

Hi,
My name is Sudha from Sydney and I am a regular listener of your voice of India. I would like to say the present system and procedure do not identify real voice of India. The best singers of this programme Abhilasha, Abhas and Sumitra continously keep getting in chakrawat.I suggest only 30 percent voting should be for public while 70 percent points should be awarded by judges.

Sudha Sharma

Saritha said...

hi Sudha,

The judges points help the audience make a right decision while voting - atleast that's what everyone keep saying.I dont think they are going to change the format now which is very sad

shad said...

WOW, voi was extremely boring without ur sur, Toshi.
Fabulous and very well sung.We sincerely hope to see u rocking the stage from coming weeks.
May all the prayers of your well wishes be fulfilled.
Good luck and best wishes and hopefully you become the VOI this time.

i thnk sum1 shud slap abhijit for his non stop coments

I'm with you there. Not because I don't like Abhijit but because I love chaatas.

But I like Meg (and her mothers) bakwas. I'm not disputing your dislike for the singers on VoI but tell us why you don't like them. Calling someone a name doesn't prove your point in any way.
