Star Voice of India: Teen shows aur do hi popular, bahut na insaafi hain yeh

Guest blogger Saritha, who is a much better writer than she gives herself credit for, tells us why Star Voice of India is so much fun to watch.

Abhijeet: Jo contestant highest marks leke Top 12 tak pahuncha hai usse phir se sun ne ki kya zaroorat hai?

Alka: Hum Sur se samjhota nahi karenge...Mere man mein Sumitra ko leke shanka hai, toh main aise aage nahi bad sakhti.

Aadesh: Hum baaki judges kya bewakoof hain...nahi sunna hain toh kya zabardasti hai!! (walks out)

There's no dearth of drama on Voice of India - which airs on Friday and Saturday at 10pm IST on Star Plus. There's no dearth of talent either. When the other two shows Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa went ahead with their final rounds, VoI was working painstakingly to come up with their Top 12 contestants - and didn't make any exceptions to the rule: only the best now form their Bemisaal Barah.

Be it the ever so perfect Sumitra (the trump card) or wonder kid Abhaas (all of seventeen aur aise sur), the power-packed performer Mohammad Irfaan, the totally natural Mirande, effortless Toshi or buland awaazvale Harshit - its sheer joy to listen to these contestants.

Contestants are split equally in two groups - Agni with Aadesh and Lalit as the gurus and Prithvi with Abhijeet and Alka as the gurus. After an ugly fallout with Aadesh, Alka vowed never to return, lekhin bhaiyya yeh showbiz hain, yahan kuch bhi ho sakhta hain. I hope she comes back - I miss all the pyari si nokh-jhok between Abhijeet and Alka.

Now that public voting has started, everyone is hoping that the judges will put aside their animated and at times volatile behavior and focus on grooming the contestants and building their confidence - even the best can crack under pressure.

Last week saw the contestants paying tribute to Kishoreda's songs, Aug 4th being his birthday. To complement Kishoreda's energy the female contestants chose Ashaji's numbers.

Baring a couple of average performances, the show kept its tempo all the time and the judges, Kishore Kumar's sons were maha impressed. It should have been elimination round, but the judges decided to give the bottom four another chance so no one's leaving this week. This I'll call leniency. Reminds me of the surprise "wild card entry" stunt in II3 and how they made the audience vote again and again for those who were eliminated. Nevertheless to see Abhas in the bottom 4 was a shock.

So even when II3 and SRGMP come to an end, we'll still have a reason to celebrate music with VoI. And with producer Gajendra Singh at the helm,a great show with good music is guaranteed.

Saritha, you are getting me hooked on VoI. Very bad! At this rate, my wife will divorce me :)

you guys should be ashamed of yourselves treating female and male contestants as sex objects, they have feelings too you know

you need to respect them for who they are and not for their sex appeal. I only go for quality of singing that is why i only watch Indian Idol 3.

Anon, whoever you are - that was pretty funny!

Excellent Sarita! Tussi great ho!

You just forgot apne pyaare Jatinji. Not fair... Theek hai, koi baat nahin, main woh kaam poora kar deti hoon.

Jatin Pandit -- "Main Sarawati maa ki kasam kha ke kehta hoon, is bacchi ne aaj bahut achha gaya hai"

I watch VoI for Jatin and Shaan. They were and still are my fav.

My husband and I couldn't believe when we saw Toshi. We thought he had changed his name ...

Anyways, then I read an article confirming that they were brothers.

Fellow bloggers from chicago, Would you be interested in Raas-Garba night. My friends and I are in the process of organizing one, but we are in a dilema Diwali Mela or Raas Garba night.

Thanks,
Rupal

Saritha, I did watch these kids shows with my older one, so I know exactly what you mean. With the younger one, he just tags along with his older brother. It is somewhat of a Khatta-Meetha memory for me. I enjoyed watching kids shows with my son, but I do not miss it either.

~mm~ try online at starvoi.com. It's good though not as good as watching on TV.

Rupal, I'm in for R-S night or Diwali for that matter. I must say I misspent my youth doing R-S but can't figure out how these new steps work. But I'm ok with the stick.

I watch VOI every now and again, Arshpreet is my fave. They get slightly better clothes than SRGMP contestants but the judges are effin wack. They make the unfunniest jokes ever.

I don't like every contestant sucking up to the celebrity guests. It makes me cringe.

Saritha said...

Priyani and Arshpreet are the other strong contenders on the show.Sad to see her in danger zone this week, and I hope she doesn't get eliminated.

I noticed that the names are a little confusing on the show.Ishmeet,harshit,Arshpreet.When I heard the name 'Arshpreet' from Shaan,I expected a guy, instead this dusky beauty came up.(I dont know much abt Punjabi names)

Then there's Prantik and Prantika-both r in bottom four.

Aspi said...

Saritha, not being a regular, I was wondering about this myself. The contestants are too confusing and they're not all on in each show? Or at least so I gather.

To make things worse, there is no index of contestants with pictures to guide people either.

Hmmm....I see another post by a budding writer. Perhaps a thumbnail of each contestant. I'm always available for screencaps.

It it highly disappointing that this show is turning out to be huge disaster, heading nowhere and not living upto the claims and expectations envisaged initially.

First of all what was the pressing need to slot this show in the peak season of two other popular musical reality shows already running when you have nothing new to offer in terms of uniqueness or speciality claimed earlier. They also made bogus claims of "showcasing auditions on a grand scale", "seiving millions of voices in search of true musical talent" while reports indicated that hardly some hundred people turned out at the auditions.

They haven't yet announced the prize money or rewards to be given to the eventual winner or the finalists of the show or as they claim is it only an effort in "realising the ordinary man's dream of becoming a singing sensation".......but what about the all important ROTI? May be just as Aabhas got the big dairy milk chocolate for his performance these may be the prizes for the other contestants and all in large economy pack sizes;
Priyani : Colgate toothpaste
Toshi & Irfan: Gillette shaving cream
Harshit:Pan parag
Ishmeet: Boost is the secret of my energy
Arshpreet:Sunsilk shampoo etc etc (suggestions welcomed)

The most annoying feature of this show are the judges with their cartoonish behaviour they are making a mockery of a musical show. Their constant squabbling, shouting at each other, getting carried away in giving comments on the performances, the habit of kissing, hugging and lifting is really disgusting. The producer is also concealing the facts about Alka yagnik's exit when she has reportedly vowed not to return to the show being fed up of her fellow judges' behaviour. They bungled bigtime during the selection of the bemisal barah leading to unnecessary fracas, with just the other day Govinda terming their fight as "local train tamasha".

Now that they have started asking for public votes it is very doubtful that public who are already hardcore fans of the other musical shows shift their loyalty and start spending their hard earned money on SMS and phonecalls when there is nothing "unique or special talent which is unseen and unheard"
which was the initial promise when now everything is thread bare and everybody knows who is capable of what.

The only promise which might hold good is the journey to "take us and the contestants and their families through weeks and months of tension".

Inspite of all these the one redeeming factor is the performances of the contestants itself, some of whom are extremely talented and have a bright musical future like Aabhas, Abhilasha, Mirande, Irfan etc etc and last but not the least gentleman personified, true professional, the supercool SHAAN and hope that our worst fears (Star plus may dump the show it doesn't generate income for it) won't become reality. One scary scenario which in all probability might spell the ultimate doom for the show is good singers getting eliminated due to public voting at the initial stages itself.

Lastly they urgently need to do something about the clothes of the contestants who are looking like clowns and jokers in a circus.

Where were U all the while Anon?Great points. That cant be called a comment. For the love of music, that's a post.

I always maintained that it is the quality of singers that make VoI interesting to watch.Simply cant ignore that kind of talent.Indian Idol was never meant to produce a singing sensation,(and they call it Bharat ki Shaan...give me a break),not after watching II2 faithfully only to realize that a talented Karunya can lose to good-looking Sundeep Acharya.

As for SRGMP,when Mauli dave survived all the mahagurus,it made me wonder if this is the same show we've been watching for ages(not me but my whole family),that actually is closer to millions of Indians and is clearly the leader. When voting starts, you can blame janta for choosing their regional favs, but what abt himesh and Ismail hinting the mahagurus abt the "incredible talent" of Mauli and influencing their decisions.

Annoying behavior?oh yeah!its everywhere.Welcome to realty shows.

And ofcourse, desperately need a stylist on VoI.Otherwise goodlooking contestants look awful in those outfits and make-up.

Aspi said...

Anon, like Saritha you are really passionate about what it takes to be a good music reality show. The fact that you both don't agree on VoI is incidental.

And both of you should have your own blog if you ask me. But if you don't feel like putting up with the regular headache, then feel free to post something for us here.

Congratualations on your 60th birthday Aspi. Didn't know you were in the exclusive club of people like Salman Rushdie's Saleem Sinai, who were born in August 1947. Obviously you were a good omen for the nation.

Aspi said...

Manish, saale, I'm not anywhere near that and don't let me get my hands around your neck anytime soon :)

Saritha thanks. I don't celebrate my birthday much - people like Manish always reminding me of how old I am :(. But I always show up for everyone else's birthdays (hint, hint).

Saritha said...

I wanted to say that my mom and mom-in-law both were born in 1947,phir socha Aspi "ji" ko kahin bura na lage that Iam comparing him with them.LOL

Still in splits.Good one manish.

It’s good to read all the posts. Now we know that we are not alone in thinking that the constant squabbling of the judges and the comical clothes of the participants are quit conspicuous and the they are the low points in the show.
We watch it for the quality of contestants. Some of them are very good. But I hate it when they ask for votes in there regional language.

You know what, methinks that this whole show and shows such as these have degenerated into reality soaps and not really about music. I mean, look at the emotion wrenching that goes on, andhi daadi, childhood clothes, oppresive childhood, it is all there.Gajendra Singh , the producer needs to exhibit some more creativity and innovation, lest he becomes the Ram Gopal Verma (of post RGV ki AAg) of TV (in fact I like that, What a phrase, as in"he got RGVd" means, a hitherto creative and talented individual, loses his creative nuts and so gets into rut and goes downhill rapdly!!)

This thing is just getting ridiculous . I mean totally annoying and idiotic. It's turning into a lame Indian reality show. They need to cut the chase and end this misery on poor husbands like my. My wife is addicted to it and it totally ruins my Friday and Saturday.

Aspi said...

Anon, I can imagine life being miserable if you're not into the shows. And its just as easy to not be into the shows. So does this mean you have only one TV and the wife monopolizes it?

Anonymous said...

Aspi.... it's not a matter of how many tv's u have. i don't know which far away land u live in where the idea of having a nice night out on fridays and saturdays after a week long hard work is pretty new ( unless u guys have made a copy of hollywood movie and copycat that too ) this show is lame, exaggerated emotional roller coaster and not more than another episode of time wasting bollywood movie.
