Star Voice of India - Want reality? Watch Discovery!

Saritha is back from vacation to talk about a cataclysmic VoI.

After a hectic trip to NY over the long weekend when I finally got a chance to watch last week’s VoI I knew it would be nothing less than a Bollywood flick with drama, sentiment and emotions - I left for NY knowing that Toshi could be eliminated via Bhtb. Was I surprised that it actually happened? Not really.

Prior to this surprise, Arshpreet’s elimination created a teeny-weeny stir on this blog making a few wonder how could people not vote for her. But Toshi being more popular, his elimination created a veritable furore on the net leading to theories and reactions about what happened.

Some feel it was a Gajendra gimmick for TRPs; some feel it was unfair to eliminate Toshi who lost out by a very small margin; yet others believe its was an attempt to balance the number of contestants on each team.

Can I rule out the possibility that the people of Rajasthan were too busy voting for Raja Hasan of SRGMP to vote for Toshi? Or that Toshi was popular but not more than Sumitra or Harshit or Abhaas?

Setting logic aside for a minute, I must admit Toshi’s elimination was one of the most heart-rending moments of ‘reality’ shows in recent times – his words on his struggle, how he didn’t want to go back to that gandgi he came from, the reaction from the audience – it was all well captured and touching to say the least. I once read that kids on ‘Boogie Woogie’ blindly and innocently ape the vulgar moves of film stars in a bid to win the contest and after all the hard work when they lose, they weep their hearts out. Well, adults are no different from kids on these shows.

Amnesia, plastic surgeries and even euthanasia are all part of the TV soaps today – they worked and will work as long as the script demands (wait, what script?). So a wild card entry on VoI may be in the offing – if that happens Toshi will be back for sure. Or maybe Gajendra Singh decides to swim against the tide and continue with the show – you never know. I feel ‘Kyonki…’ is more real than these shows now.

Earlier, there was a moment on the show about a recent incident in India, that has been lingering in my mind for a while now. After Irfan’s performance Shaan asked him about the recent Hyderabad blasts that shook the city and as how he felt about it as a local. This was - followed by Alka singing ‘Allah tero naam’ .

Like Irfan said for many it is just news - it was for me until it happened to my city on Aug 25th. I do not know victims but these are the places I once frequented. The famous (then congested) eatery near the college ‘Gokul chat’ where I would go with friends after purchasing books in the nearby shops, sharing a pani puri or mirchi bajji with the little pocket money we were left with or ‘Lumbini Park’ where I spent few (very few ofcourse) Sunday evenings with my family and then come back and crib about the pollution, traffic and still how much we love the city.

Like my husband says, Human Loss is a loss that cannot be recovered – be it Coimbatore ,Varanasi , Mumbai or Hyderbad. Worse case lays those who are in still in coma or are struggling to lead their own life after being seriously injured. Last year, Mumbai put up a brave front when faced with terrorism and stood back on its feet in a day startling the world and us. And the ‘Pearl City’ will recover too. The Hyderabad incident is true reality.

Steve Irwin , the crocodile hunter who spent a major part of his life dealing with poisonous snakes and deadly crocodiles died after being fatally pierced by a Stingray barb – now that is reality.

That 'You + Teeth = Me' caption had me in spits. Hilarious.

I think it's possible that Toshi's elimination was TRP gimmick. I have been receiving many visitors from Google where people are searching for details about Toshi's elimination. I feel that if this was deliberate move by Gajji, it was pathetic one and a talented singer like Toshi is going to pay the price for it. I still find it hard to believe that Toshi is out.

Real Vs Virtual

I still remember the day when Toshi sang rather beautifully " teri dewani" and the judges went gaga, Abhijeet jumped up from his seat with a little black something in his hand and tried to shove it into toshi's folded palms....Shaan gave an inquisitive glance at the ominous object and then with a sheepish grin clarified to the camera that is was a blank cheque....(yawn!)...Now since Toshi chose to sought ashirwad instead, the cheque remained a virtual one..and being clueless about Abhijeet's bank balance added to it's virtuality.
Few weeks later abhijeet tearfully proclaimed Toshi his adopted son..a well appreciated proclamation no doubt!! but alas still Virtual....Now if Toshi chooses to forgo ashirwad this time and walks up to Abhijeet's door clutching his tiny "VIP" stuffed with his newly sponsored sherwanis and glimmer of hope, that my dear, would be the beginning of Reality....And Reality bites....just hope Abhijeet dada is man enough to bear the sting...

By the way, gimmick or no gimmick, wild card or no wild card, the gut wrenching sobs of toshi as he refused to walk back to the gandgi were just as real as those of the relatives of hyderabad blast...both reeked of death, death of a dream...
May their soul rest in peace

I don't mind people posting links to their sites with comments. In fact I try to link in my posts as well. As long as its not random spam or those ridiculous comments about Javed Akhtar's parentage and religion that I had to delete, its all good.

Btbh, that comment should have been a post which means you are due for one if you can find the time :). My suggestion: guest blog here or start your own blog which I'll be happy to read regularly. Entertain us!

BHTB,

Are you the 'greatbong' in disguise? That comment was funny. If possible, could you email me? My email is useless . desi AT gmail

Thanks,

Speaking of connections,
STOVIS
Oooooooo!! that was flattering. Thanx! No my dear, I am not the 'great bong" ( for whom I have the highest regards) in disguise. Incidentally We do share a connection ;his father (for whom I have even higher regards)was one of my favourite profs at IIM Calcutta.
P.S. Sorry to hear your email is useless!! so is mine..... Cheer up! ( just kidding..will mail u soon)

Saritha,
Do you believe this?? My birth certificate claims my place of birth to be a certain “Isabella Nursing Home’ in Madras…unfortunately, by the time I was two, my Tamil ties were severed as my father shifted base to Calcutta. Though my first words were uttered in this pious and intriguingly sonorous language, my Tamil skills died quite a premature death.

My fascination for the French language may be traced to my erstwhile home town Chandannagore which was a French colony and was inducted to India as late as 1955!

Aspi
I love your site to a FAWLT!, the German inspiration may be triggered by good old Führer “Adolf” after whom I am sure the Lord has modeled my dear wife….bang…@# thud…@#...clank!!…Ouch!! sorry that was written in jest and has no connection what so ever to reality. My wife happens to the most gentle, loveable, kind, cooperating person on earth, she has contributed heavily towards, world peace, PETA, Greenpeace, nuclear non proliferation and not to mention her undying support for the poor , the downtrodden and the underprivileged…. in short she is Mother Teresa reincarnate only much younger and prettier….C’mon dear! If you insist on keeping my arms twisted behind my back, I can not type!!!!

heck man,bhtb

why do people always talk about their madras connection or the broken tamil they can speak, when one is talking about Telugu,a south Indian lang spoken in Andhra.

Do you know that Telugu is the second most spoken language in India after Hindi?

I remember when I visited Taj Mahal few yrs back, every second guy would ask me if I was Madrasi...grrr...I was like, there r 4 diff langs in south, man.

Just to introduce you to Telugu, chk these-

if you like melody,tabu song:

Unconditional Apology Mam!
Saritha you rightly hit upon the "Southy = Madrasi" syndrome. I am ashamed of my stereotyping, But that was the closest I went to Telugu I presume.
Having two of my chaste Telugu speaking cousins from secundrabad ( both students of St Ann Tarnaka) and having stayed for two whole weeks in the pearl city savouring biryani, marveling the clocks of Salar Jung adoring every inch of Charminar & Golconda, my action tantamount to nothing less than a blasphemy!!..
Hope to make amends by promising to learn at least a spatter of all the four Madrasi languages in the next four years....(..Stands in attention, stomach in, chest out, right hand held out solemly...)

Aspi said...

Hey I remember going to the AR Rahman concert in Chicago this summer with Kalyan and he kept telling me how tired he was of waiting for a Telugu song!

anu g said...

Four Madrasi languages!!! Bong, I think you have got ur Geography all wrong.Madras is just one city out of all the four Southern states. I am amazed at how people can term us Madrasis.I am a Tamilian but I have never lived in Madras.I can understand how exasperating it is for Saritha. So Bong, I guess u have to learn ur geography first before linguistics!
Tho I guess we must consider ourselves Indians first......aka Irfan Khan. Today theres a freedom fighter going to appear on SVOI who will be praising Irfan for saying he thinks of himself as am Indian, and not as a person fro the South alone.(Poor man didnt realise Irfan said these words cos he was worried that not many people in the South watch this programe,so he wouldnt get many votes)
.Since theres one spoiler, heres another....the site which said Toshi was out last week says that Priyani is out this week.!So be prepared for some more tears from Abhijeet.

Aspi said...

anu g, I'm glad you came out and said why you think Irfan actually made those comments. It made me laugh!

So what's VoI doing? Voting all the cute girls off? Truth be told, Priyani wasn't as good as Arshpreet.

Bong Hits the bong said...

Crap I think I did it again!
But this time I did it intentionally....no offense meant Anu, I forgot to put the inverted commas for the "Madrasi"..that would have indicated that my intention was pure pun and fun not lack of geographical sense. Sorry my attempts fell face flat....( Now u know why dare not start my own blog...half of it would filled with such goofs and other half apologies)
As aspi would have put it : I am terrible at everything except Geography, at which I am a disaster
Apologies to all and sundry
Bye

anu g said...

Oh no Aspi, dont tell me u r also influenced by Javed talking of prejudice against girls...I am not one of those young 'cute' girls who apparently vote for all the boys alone.I love good music.Priyani was definitely a very yo-yo singer. Ashpreet had a lovely voice which unfortunately didnt suit some typical filmi songs. Comparitively the boys do sing better...Abhaas, Harshit and Irfan do sing better. If Sumitra does get out next, it will not be becos of any prejudice but only becos she sings very 'screechy' songs. She chooses songs very carefully Mauili-style. As a fellow-Tamil-Iyer, I was impressed by her first song, but after that I have been very disappointed. Wow! I qualify to be a very unbiased 'Indian'!

anu g said...

Hey Bong, apology accepted. Dont worry. If u 'genuinely' (as Himesh loves to say)know that Madras is not the South, then I must say u r much better off than so many other people. So just go ahead with ur blog and entries.

anu g said...

And Aspi, Priyani 'cute'? I am not talking about looks alone.(Though of course the fashion designer of SVOI is shocking! He comes up with such hideous costumes and make-up, the girls look terrible. Those tights with short tops, look disgusting esp on 'healthy' girls. Poor Abhilasha looked like a little girl trying to look like a model once when she had to wear these tight golden tights with a short top). Oh,I have gone off track.Coming back to the 'cute' girls, Priyani has this tendency to 'maskaa maro' all the judges which was very irritating. So I am sorry, I cannot agree with u.

Leera said...

Relax people! We all stereotype. Its the quickest way for most people to make sense of things.
I have heard everything from 'roshogolla khabo?'(hand motion included) as a form of introduction, to 'Do yall ride an elephant to school?'(dumb chick + small town Texas)
I remember spending a good part of my adolescent years thinking B'witched was a current show and that Bold and the Beautiful represented American life.
I think as long as we are willing to learn and make an effort to do so given the opportunity, its human to be slightly clueless about the world outside our sandbox.

Saritha said...

bhtb,
If the human body has 206 bones, then more than half in your body are vvvery funny.:-))

I got that 'madrasi' equation,mister...chalo maaf kar diya :-)

anu g,
That Irfan philosophy did irritate me too.I only wish contestants stop treating these shows as Miss Universe or Miss World paegents and try to be real.Ofcourse,it is true that not many follow hindi shows in South Inida.

Priyani's voice is not unique but her performances have been good.As for Arshpreet, she can be easily picked from a bunch b'coz of her unique and mesmerizing voice.

And as for ur name,'anu g' sounds like the way Mini Mathur calls Anu Malik on II3 - 'annu ji'.Yeh kya maajra hai?

Aspi said...

Actually I was being mock-grumpy that there weren't any good looking girls left on VoI. But I just saw Priyani's Back in Black get up in last Saturday's show and I take back everything favorable I said about her.

Aspi said...

Hey my old classmates still call me Bawa. And in German class I was called Bauer.

leera,

Thanks Saritha. Watching them on VOI made me check out the movie. Well that's one post release plug that blatantly worked!

anu g said...

Hi Saritha ji,
The 'g' is what my surname starts with and was added cos I didnt want to be confused with any other 'anu' who would blog here.
To be frank, I never realised that the 'g' sounded like the respectable 'ji'!!!!Of course any respect coming my way is welcome:).
Hey the 'g' could also be 'gaaru. I know 'Telugu' too!

But just one request, please dont think of Annu Malik when you read my entrie. Thats too upsetting. Of course I have changed my opinion about him slightly after the proud tears of joy I saw on his face when his daughter performed!

Saritha said...

what ever you say anu gaaru!

Aur main aapne dushman ko bhi anu malik se compare na karoo ji(or g?)

Talking about outfits:

Seems like Mauli and Sumedha do quite well but who dresses Poonam. Good lord, she is still wearing the long shirt on top of a lehenga that Karishma kapoor use to wear in 1989.

What Has been done to bring Toshi BacK?… NOTHING!!! People took time out to protest against the elimination in form of demonstrations nd sending emails. What did it materialise in???
NOTHING! seems to have fallen in deaf ears. How about the judges they said that they were gonna try their best to bring Toshi back so WHAT HAVE THEY DONE???? Seems its a whole lot f BULL CRAP!! There was a certain degree of assurance amongst peoples minds that the outcome of all protests would be very positive! What a DISGRACE to VOI’s team as they can’t keep their words. Utterly dissapointing but No comparison to the commedable efforts put in by INDIAN IDOLS TEAM TO GET THEIR STAR BACK THROUGH THE WILD CARD CATEGEORY

Saritha said...

Anon 1,
lol!Thanks for that.

Anon 2,
Agreed early 90's Karisma Kapoor looked terrible - glad that 'Raja Hindustani' happened and then there was no looking back.

Poonam had a makeover a few weeks back(or that is what everyone thought) now she needs a make- under...sigh

Saritha said...

Anon 3,

If they decide to bring Toshi back, they might do that after a few weeks, may be after reaching top 5.

Now that Priyani is out, guess who'll go next - from Agni team.

anu g said...

Saritha, lol, i loved the word 'make-under! Though I think VOI needs to desperately understand the difference between making a personlook chic, and making a person look hideous.

meg said...

They are bringing wildcard round back on VOI
I bet they did that just to bring Toshi back.. I am so sad Arshpreet won't get a chance even if she's way more talented
Only because they are publisizing Toshi's ouster like some great big tragedy..
