Much ado about hand holding

Mind Rush puts tongue in cheek and analyzes Shekhar's recent Deepika hand-grab.

Much ado was created by the last episode on SRGMP where we see Shekhar holding hands with Deepika. This incident begs a series of questions…

Can a man hold hands with a woman in public if she is not his wife, girlfriend, mother or daughter? In India? In Mumbai? If she’s labeled a PYT? And if he’s older than her, married, and she’s supposedly single? Is this duo guilty of breaking some major code of behavior? Or are they innocent?

Let’s explore the many facets of this issue before we answer...

First the setting. This happened on stage, not in a darkened pub. It happened when music was pulsating, V-S were on a high as they promoted their music on “their” show and a good time was being had by all. Initial evidence suggests: Innocent.

Next, let’s look at the act itself. Yes, hand-holding can be intimate. Or a gesture to steady someone’s nerves. (Exhibit A: All lawyers seem to hold hands with their opposite gender clients on the steps of the courthouse.) Hand holding can be a prelude to dancing. All of the above are socially acceptable. Jury is tending towards: Innocent.

Now let’s examine context. Hmmm. Older desi man, younger, pretty actress. In many, many parts of Bharat, this is a no go. So many people see hand holding as just a tiny step below public smooching. And see where that got Shilpa Shetty (and Gere). Anyway, what I am saying is that in the entertainment world public perception is reality. Jury is confused: Guilty??

Do explore alternate explanations. Are S and D related? Who knows? Did she want to grab his hand becoz she just felt comfortable? Quite possible. Was Shekhar about to faint again due to low blood sugar and he needed the extra support? (Bring in a new witness, the show ka doctor) Jury is thinking hard. Not sure. Maybe. Perhaps.

Finally, let’s examine motive. And I mean our own. Why the heck do we care? Yaar, life is too short for me to be writing this post and for you to be reading it. Go hold hands with someone. Now.

Jury: Dismissed.

Best waste of time this!

Mind Rush, I like how you mix in the slick social observations with the humor.

You should be the resident SRGMP counselor!

When Aneek said he sang so well cos he sang with 'feel', Shekar was so inspired he decided to have the real 'feel'ing.
Hey the actual reason is that Farah wanted us to get used to the sight of a 40 plus hero with the teenager....U wont be repulsed anymore when u watch the movie!

Well all of you ask yourselves, is this how you'd like to spend your precious time doing? Worrying about trivial matters?

How about stepping outside your home and doing something for the goodness of mankind. In a world full of problems, war, racism, genocide, famine, poverty, decline of morality amongst NRI children, teen pregnancies, sex without wedlock, exposing body in the name of fashion, nuclear war etc YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT THIS?

Yes I am currently setting up computers and internet in rural Peruvian village to make their lives better with use of technology.

I advised the poor Peruvian children to not come to aspisdrift as it might take away their soul and corrupt their innocent and impressionable minds.

LOL Aspi, you're too much! And Mind Rush.. ahahahahah! (fell off the chair)

I am having fun reading these funny posts and comments.

I wish I was Deepika. ;) But hey if it can't be me, let Deepika hold his hand. I am sure she was dying to do that. :D

And SR if you're reading this: *blush blush* *faint faint* (not you, me and it's not the low sugar but the other one... you!) ;)

over 'n' out!

Niranjan I didnt want to take this argument any further.....but why Peru, why not our India?
And I dont expect a reply cos in the time u take to read this entry and reply, you could have set up one more computer!
Over and out for sure!

Aspi, my apologies for shooing off one of ur visitors. It is after all ur blog site. I reacted as one of the 'gentry' who doenst know much about music!!!Gosh, all this is doing very badly for my peace-loving image!

To me the hand-holding looked odd because of the image Deepika was trying to portray. In a saree she was coy looking more like Aishwarya Rai instead of Bipasha Basu.

Now if Basu held hands with someone no big deal but if Ash was seeing holding hands with someone other than her hubby it would look strange.

Ok, I need to know what bagalthela and bagaljhola mean?

Sania said...

Ditto on the bagalthela and bagaljhola - my Hindi is perfectly acceptable, thank you, but I don't think those are Hindi words?

Niranjan, it would behoove you to LEAVE if we offend your sensibilities so. I mean, gosh, you might just have to wash your eyes out with acid after reading our unenlightened and unenlightening commentary.

All sarcasm aside, I happen to know that many of the commenters here are highly educated, successful professionals. (Myself excluded, of course, I've barely passed third grade and wouldn't know a sur from a banjo.) You may want to take your pitiful IIT degree and shove it. KthxBye!

girlie girl said...

I agree on the whole 'bagalthela and bagaljhola'...i dont get it.

Way to go Sania! you tell those 'educated' people where to go and what to do with their fancy degrees!

Niranjan, what i fail to understand is, you complain about how terrible we all are and how bad this site is, yet, i feel like you read the blog, the comments and give your opnion on it, whether we want it or not! I bet you've gone back and read most of Aspi's old blogs too!

Great post Mind Rush...I have tears in my eyes from laughing...see some of us have a sense of humor so we can enjoy things like this! Keep it up!

anu g, feel free to shoo anyone. This blog belongs to all of you as much as me. I just do the initial posting.

However, I felt that Niranjan has finally found the spirit of this blog. Well done.

If I were Bappi I would sing "Yoo aur mai cheekeen frai" and Niranjan would listen to it all the time.

Aspi said...

Well a bagalthela (or jhola) is one of those over the shoulder bags - typically khadi - worn by arty kavi, gajal types.

This accessory when coupled with a kurta was the attire of choice for both men and women of higher intellect than the likes of me.

Not that I haven't tried to exploit the image - and it worked for a while too but way too briefly.

Hi All,
With due respect to Aspi and all the other outrageously funny posters, I find Niranjan's posts extremely funny. Like Aspi, I am also a huge fan of irony that oozes from Niranjan's posts.

Niranjan, Anu shoo'ed you out; I would like to shoo you in.

MindRush, your post was funny.

Agree with Texan.

I've visited Niranjan's site and it was slightly on heavier side. He's probably letting his hair down on this site.

And see the man has become (in)famous on this site.Good or bad he's in limelight.

mind rush, love the hand holding analysis. hope u'll continue the series! ranbir/sonam did some of that on VoI --- but to seed the idea of a (fake?) romance to promote their movie i think. saritha, waiting for yr roundup ---- after all i was inspired to watch VoI thanks to yr posts! ---- ok, i'll be honest and admit also that once II3 ended, it freed up some time :)

i've had a trying week (family emergency that didn't end well), so it was a nice change of pace to move fm the serious to the seriously funny. all the difters - aspi and all of the other posters lightened my mood considerably. with due respect to niranjan and his lofty calls for duty, this site brings some much needed laughs and a great set of folks to hang with. may the fun continue.........

Yeah I know Neil is a hrithik lookalike and i read that he has signed a 3 movies contract with the production house where Duggu has a 3 movie contract with as well

so there is a chance we might see the two sexy's on one movie. Oh yeah! then they should get Ash to be opposite Duggu and Sonam opposite Neil!

That will be perfect..

You too can make a difference.

As an aside, I knew many khadi types in my wild young days. They were out to change the world. But they also had a huge sense of humor! You can't do serious work without the ability to laugh, or you will burn yourself out. So please do not equate Niranjan with real activist types.

Aiye hai....let poor N alone. He comes here to find respite. We all are magnanimous - the kindred souls that we are. Even at the cost of being called names, we will continue to embrace people (even shooing off is not the serious kinds). We will continue to allow people to let off steam here. (Serious bhashan baazi nahin samajh mein aati). Besides, all the social work people do here doesn’t get mentioned by them; this place is for pure unadulterated funnn! We don’t mix business and pleasure…. So you may continue to say what you want to N. Soon you will get moulded in the spirit here, even as you let that awful load off your chest. Good luck!

girlie girl said...

hey, Niranjan, here's a thought...the amount of time you spend reading these posts and the blog, you could've taught a Peruvian child how to read the alphabet or even sound out his/her vowels! haha...i'm kidding, we enjoy your devil's-advocate type comments!

hey anu,

Like Farha said 'You are the number one positive energy on this blog'.You have a wonderful way of looking at things and manage to remain neutral most of the time, which is so nice. You are and will continue to be our resident Peace-maker.

As for Aspi,he's not the kind to say something for the heck of it.He actually means it.If he says shooing someone off is ok,then it 'is' ok.The man refrains from making any statements if he doesn't believe in them....oh yeah,I just took up 'psychology' at a near by community college (wink, wink)

If u've noticed this is not Niranjan-Niranjan...there's someone else who is providing us with all the manoranjan.Aspi might shed some light on this soon.

This place is laugh-a-min riot.I dont come here b'coz Iam a co-blogger,but b'coz I love all the humour served here by the fellow drifters. So,three cheers to all of us.

Saritha, sob sob, I am so overwhelmed with all the nice things u had to say....Thank you so much.
Tho I must confess I am far from perfect.I realised it after the match.....What a wonderful experience. The ambience, the adrenalin there is something to be experienced for sure....But that day, in the morning the kids were 'its raining, whine whine; why should we have bfast, we will be late, whine whine;the parking lot is so far away from the stadium, whine whine!!',and I gave them a big lecture that 'U have to enjoy every experience here, its not just the match blah blah".....That evening,on our way back, my husband and kids were coming back excitedly chattering about all that happened, and I was so forlorn that India had lost....I announced I would never come for a live match again. My family was shocked! They were like 'Ma, how can u say that!"!!Sigh! I realised that its so easy to sermonise, but boy!Its so difficult to practise it!

As for Mr.N, r u trying to tell me its Aspi in disguise?Gosh, what a ride I have been taken for!!!!But I guess its very easy being a different person here....Aspi, was that y u also mentioned that the trps have gone down after II3....well,if its true, I must applaud the wonderful difference in jekyll and hyde....the tone and writing styles are very starkly different!!!

Aspi said...

Niranjan wasn't me I can tell you that for sure. But after the first two comments, someone else decided to have a go at him and make it funny. I can't tell you who it is (blogger confidentiality) - but consider Niranjan gone :)

Thanks for the clarification! I am relieved!

Oh no, I am slow on the uptake as I age..I cant recall the sequence of events, so I dont know after which two comments Mr N left.So u mean I may have shooed him off? Hai Ram!

Aspi said...

anu g, he definitely left after he put down the second comment or after you shooed him off. Both are fine because we couldn't have had so much fun with "him" if it hadn't happened that way.

And I was waiting to hear the first hand info on match from you...mmm
