Dance Party on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007

I must confess Sanjay Gupta's shilling for his anthology flick Dus Kahaniya on SRGMP this week did leave my curiosity duly tickled. Ten flicks, roughly ten minutes each, filled with starlets and aspiring wannabes and some item numbers to boot. The last time one of my favorite directors - Allison Anders - tried this on a smaller scale in Four Rooms along with her buddies Tarantino and Rodriquez, it fell flat on its face. So this looks intriguing!

It was a stroke of genius on the part of the SRGMP producers to invite Gupta and his considerable entourage on the show. Because I went crazy ass bananas trying to take in the reactions of everyone - not to mention poking fun at some of them kept me thoroughly busy and entertained.

At one point, I remember Mika Singh jumped on stage and did a helicopter with his hair. This made my head spin. And no one had even said Mindblowing yet, so I was pretty sober. I also noted that Neha Dhupia was completely outdanced by the girl on her left. Poor Mika looked pretty insecure every time one of the three finalists turned in yet another rousing performance. Diya Mirza, with her left arm in a cast, did a chest thump to applaud Amanat. Himesh Reshammiya was forced to dance and gave us a glimpse of his Amitabh-level competence. And Baby Bleeng Bleeng appeared to have consumed way too much coffee in the pre-show reception.

But what I enjoyed the most was when everyone found themselves on stage and very gamely tried to shake a leg - often looking severely comical - not that they seemed to mind. Manoj Bajpai jumping on stage to issue a horrific, but rather sporting, dance with Raja Hasan led to the first impromptu Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa audition.

Then when Aneek sang, Himesh tried to engineer yet another romanchuk moment for his chela. First, he had poor Diya Mirza trot on stage and surprise Aneek. Aneek looked as surprised as my toothbrush is to see me in the morning. Somehow Himesh managed to convince all the girls to go on stage and say cute things to Aneek. To his credit, Aneek didn't bat an eyelid and lapped it all up.

Now this made me cringe, but what I did have fun with was the pressure this put on Ismail Darbar to bring some glitter to his chela's subsequent performance. Thus when Amanat sang, Darbar grabbed as many of the stars he could lay his hands on and pushed them on stage to clap and dance with Amanat. And here's the rub: surely this doesn't help the votes. So this sideshow is now entirely a platform for the gurus to outdo each other. Later Darbar - who looked somewhat depressed throughout the show - paid kudos to Amanat mentioning that his performance had drawn so many hastis on stage. Gee, Darbar, next time try not to drag everyone up there and then we'll see.

So who has the momentum now on SRGMP? Raja gathered more moss on this show than either Aneek or Amanat. Aneek was rock steady again and to his credit, Himesh is still trying hard to manufacture a come-from-behind win for his entry. But Amanat dispelled many doubts over his presence on the show - especially mine - with his fearless singing.

i aint seen the episode yet so im gonna comment after i watch it

it sounds hilarious

and aspi, no mention of shekhar's little unbuttoning of his shirt on stage? flashing us his hairy chest and proving once again that he is my sexy human sasquatch

Oh my gosh - you didn't mention Mika coming up to the stage during Amanat's performance and wrenching the mike away to sing for himself. I mean, all I really have to say to that is WTF, mate.

And after he finishes singing, Gupta asking him to sing it once more - "just amanat." As though it was his fault he didn't sing it alone the first time!

Really, I had never heard of this Mika chap before he had shown up on one of the Indian Idol episodes.. but he kind of needs to go away and never come back. He is all sorts of everywhere, unfortunately.

BTW - does anyone know where I can get a better version of this episode? The one I downloaded has awful audio quality, and I'd like to enjoy Amanat's performance in it's true glory. Doubts about his belonging on this stage?? Pish tosh.

Amanat sang the song thrice! The first time he was really flustered to see Mika grab the mike. That was crazy cos its supposed to be a competition and Amanat was supposed to be given marks. But I guess it helped Amanat get all the sympathy (u could see Ronit Roy signalling 'relax',let the bully finish, phir dikhaado').
With all due credit to Amanat for singing this song beautifully, I think theres something about this song which moves the audience. When the Little champs runner-up Sameer sang this, everyone started to cry..Shaan,Alka Yagnik,Abhijeet,Bappi - all of them.
Aneek is making a fool of himself saying that actually last time he said the song was for Deepika only cos she was on the stage, and that actually the song is for Dia this time (while all along he knew that she was very much in the backstage waiting like a toothbrush!(Lovely simile,Aspi!).
I think Aneek is a fabulous singer, but Him is such a pain that I dont want Him to win. Like my daughter says 'Himesh is corrupting Aneek'!!!

Amanat is such a fantastic singer. He brought tears to my eyes with "Sawan Beeto Jaaye". I think thought that Aneek's voice is not only sweet and full of emotions..he is so close to sounding like Rafi. Aneek is brilliant is every performance. His "Tumhari zulf ke saayen shaam .." and etc etc etc... Both singers at such a younf age are simple outstanding. I wish both God's grace - may they go far in life. As for Raja, I think he is way overrated. Thats the best thing I can say about him.

Saturday show was again a rocker – we got to see more of fine performances. A thought – if HR was a contestant in this, by what round do you guys think he would’ve gotten out? Any idea?

Bu before that - What a thought – “10 mins” ki Dus kahaniyan! Am sure am not looking forward to something like that. Thanks for the cue Aspi – when already experimented with, the concept has fallen flat. Maybe Sanjay Guota got the entire star caste on for free, and he decided to go ahead with the experiment with bare minimum cost. There is scope for revenue there!

What an entourage that was! I thought the women looked soooo spaced out (did they pay to act?). With those bland expressions is Sanjay planning on long shots only with mega glitz and action?. ;-)
The tamasha on stage was worth all the pennies in one’s pocket! The tapori dance by VS, hip swinging by the bland beauties, jig by the guys… Except --
Mika – ufff, in a contest, he grabs the mike from the contestant to sing! Good observation about Aneek, Anu. Aneek came across as some sort of a slime ball with that Deepika story. Or is he learning the ropes from his mentor real fast?

Raja has moved from sedate, composed performances - soft, sufi, romantic to setting the stage rocking – as if to challenge the judges not to under estimate his potential. And he seems to be having a blast even as he does so.

VS have also gotten into their own. Loved the way they have started to use sugary words to strike back at the other HR-ID duo. When praise was being heaped on Aneek Shekhar remarked with a rather catty comment, without sounding catty ,“itni tareef se to koi non singer bhi singer ban jaye…” only to cover it up adequately. Shekhar – was that some kinda “slit of the pung”? Poor Aneek – seems to be suffering for the company he keeps (ouch the mentor he has!).

Amanat was excellent. Would love to see the final between Amaanat and Raja. Ditto Anu G’s gurl – don’t want Aneek to win b;coz of his guru.. Have started to plug my ears when HR starts with his “yeh bahut achha insaan hai,-- genuinely…”! Genuinely, ab mujhe samajhna padega genuine ka meaning kya hai! ID has been looking progressively more and more jaded in all episodes, of late!

Pratik said...

I wish they would have started this episode with song sung by 'sacira' of India - "It's raining stars" (inspired from Geri's rendition).
The center stage was seeming small for the celebrity guests :-). Raja, as most of the times, selected peppy famous numbers, sang them well and was center of attraction. Aneek sang beautifully but was over shadowed by his mentor's marketing gimmicks (this time targeting female audience). Amanat also sang beautifully with "Tujh se narraz nahi jindagi" being the best! And we had HR to remind us for the umpteenth time that SRGMP is having highest TRP, is based on 'rishton ki buniyaad' & has divine blessings.
Keep them coming! ;-)

nahhh...haven't y'all heard??? hr is seriously limited in terms of vocabulary....infact he writes down all the words 'awesome. superb. outstanding. mindblowing. brilliant' on his palm and tries to memorise them when the camera's not on him!!

but he finally succeeded in memorising one word: GENUINELY. so now we keep on hearing 'genuinely' all the time -.-||

oh and mika was seriously annoying, what a huge pest man. honestly, someone teach him PATIENCE and RESPECT...

sanjay gupta seems to have been a bit hard for cash lately...seeing as most of his 'celebs' are unknown obscure people...nice way to promote huh? +_______+

all in all, the OSO episode was WAY better!!!

coming to the singing: there was singing???? oh wait yeah there shoulda been in btw all the promos and dancing and stuff...

'Stop playing TT?'

Aspi, I want to utter that dialog of Gulshan Grover,

'Dirty Mind'. ;)

I can't stand SRGMP because of all the melodrama which goes on the show [I wonder how Aspi enjoys it!] but Amanat and Aneek have some real talent.

On a second thought, looks like Gaji thought that melodrama on SRGMP brings in TRP so he has started copying that on VoI while the actual reason SRGMP works is because of the talented participants and giving them chance to sing melodious songs.

Saritha said...

Aspi,what is chato?

Sania said...

SVOIshow - when Gajendra Singh was in charge of SRGMP (back in the Challenge 2005 days) there was just as much, if not more, drama. He created situations where the contestants walked out because they didn't appreciate who was eliminated, situations where the judges fought each other, basically what he's doing on SVOI now. Of course, Himesh had his love story then too, but I think that's just Himesh.

Saritha said...

J and sania,

I can't tell you how Iam dragging myself to watch last sat's VoI episode. It's so boring.I've said this to myself enough no. of times that Iam going to be nice while coming up with a report.

Aspi said...

Yaar, the TT comment was based on people teasing me about it when I was a kid (I was a shy kid in school).

Saritha, to chato means to lick: same as chamchaagiri.

Joules said...

Sania, you missed out on the Mika-Rakhi Sawant episode.

http://www.indiafm.com/features/2006/06/13/1291/index.html

That's what made him famous.

This was the worst episode of Saregamapa. Sanjay Gupta seemed fakely exuberant. And the C-level starlets were trying to out do each other with their makeup and dresses.

Priti said...

Bang on, about the worst guests on the show yet, Joules. Considering this was the last episode before the finale, the selection of the guests was mindless! (Did Sanjay pay to get his train on the show? -Just as the starlets did to act in the movie - am still shuddering!).
Took breaks during those inane dances!
Thank God for the singing....such a saviour. Which is why I was watching the show anyway.

Sidekick said...

Aspi, riproaring writeup and captions as usual ..... tempted to say superb, outstanding, mind blowing, fantastic but that would be doing yr talent a disservice! esp liked baby bleeng bleeng, the black sheep - still can't stop laughing :)

Sania, ditto - between the II3 finale and SRGMP, I've seen more of Mika than i want to in a lifetime. But Amanat couldn't have scripted it better if he had planted Mika's intrusion. Like Anu g said it helped him sing 3 times and get plenty of sympathy. plus it provided a nice counter point of just how uninspiring the sing can be compared to amanat's soulful rendition. in gupta's defense i think his 'once more' was abt making sure that mika, who can only be described as a social embarrassment, doesn't hijack the mike again.

btw who is this ronit roy? i'm too lazy to google him. seems like showbiz is full of buff looking guys ( when did all of the guys start working so much on their bods?!?) and heavily made up women in long evening gowns!

Priti, I agree that ismail darbar seems increasingly morose. Poor ID is something of a misfit amongst the judges – he can match neither V-S’s smooth and elegant shilling of Raja nor HR’s naked ambition and competitiveness in pushing Aneek. HR’s pleading for the stars to do the tapori dance for Aneek’s performance after their tapori turn for Raja had me in splits. Since ID is not a rah rah type of guy all the motivation he can muster for his protege is that guests clapped/danced for u 'dil se' and that I’m grateful/fortunate to have u as a shagird. He’s almost better off not trying at all. V-S do a pretty nice job of propping up Amanat. Vish in particular tries hard to make sure Amanat doesn’t disappear into oblivion in HR’s nautanki. Vish seems like a stand-up guy, he's fast climbing to the top of my charts. Mind Rush, can I add to the chorus and join the guzarish for a piece on Vishal? – pretty please :)

girlie girl said...

I second Sidekick's request on doing a piece on Vishal! he does seem like a 'genuinely' nice guy! :D Aspi, loved the comments as always. My Fav was 'baby bleeng bleeng' one...Hysterical!

Didnt watch Fridays episode, but saturday's was such non-sense that i feel like i didnt miss out on anything. and the things i did miss out on, i knew Aspi would fill me in! The cast on the stage looked like the future members of VH1's Surreal life. Such train-wrecks up there. and who the hell is this Mika character? jeez! the singing by the contestants was great, but could've done it without the obvious HR drama. WOuld love to see the finale between Raja and Amanat...although, i dont know who i would cheer for, Amanat has become my new favorite!

Sania said...

I heart Vishal too. :) He's totally the best.

Joules - I had heard of the Rakhi Mika scandal, but I guess I hadn't paid too much attention to who he was. But between his presence on Indian Idol, SaReGaMa, Jhalak Dikhlaja, and the constant references to him on Nach Baliye (because Rakhi Sawant is on that show), I'm definitely sick of the Mika madness. I mean, on Nach Baliye this week, one of the jodis' performances was based on the Rakhi/Mika incident! Like, they performed it!!

Leera thanks for the link, but I think that's the same file I downloaded. Oh well, you win some, you lose some. Until I get a better version, I'm going to say that I'm not sure I agree that Amanat's version was particularly soulful. But I'm open to people explaining why.

Sidekick - having watched it again, I'll concede that Gupta was just trying to undo Mika's obnoxiousness. My earlier comment is retracted.

Ronit Roy is Rohit Roy's brother (Mihir from Kyunki..) and he's a serial actor as well. He's also currently the host of Jhalak Dikhlaja 2, and I think he's a cutie, along with his brother who is by far the best dancer on JDJ (imo).

Joules said...

sidekick, I agree on the guys with the buff'ed look. Saw a movie with Tushar Kapoor yesterday and he is all buff'ed now.

btw, Rohit Roy is a tv actor. He was one of Vivek Oberoi's side kick :) in Shootout at Lokhandwala.

About the women wearing long flowing gowns, we Indian women rarely dress for the occassion. Come on, you girls are 18-25 in age. (and that includes you Deepika) wear something cute - like a cocktail dress or jeans with a cute top. They either go the behenji or the over made vamp look.

Love the new Adnan said...

Am I the only person here who thinks Adnan Sami is a cutie :)

He looks great with all the weight he is lost.

Plus I love his British-Pakistani-Indian accent.

Kanan said...

This show was BLAH! It was worse than a circus.

I couldn't keep track of who was on.. Other than the usual members of this circus, I could recognize a few faces like Dia who looked cute even with her hand injured and a fancy nighty kind of dress, Afty as hot as ever! and Manoj who looked quite handsome dancing on stage in black shirt and that dancer gal Miss Lamba. Who were the other lot and why were they there?

LOL HR looked like he had a few shots of divel/eyraDiyu. Hahahaha!!! I dunno what it's called in English.

Someone please tell me when did SR unbutton his shirt? I thought he wore a t-shirt, no? Reminds me of the button laundry caption of Aspi's post a few weeks back. hehehe Loved the stage-thumping dance by VS. :D The table tennis comment was hilarious.

Now coming to the singing, Amanat is the best singer among the three contestants and my favorite. Raja is scoring all points because of being in VS gharana. The audience loves VS and so have kept Raja there, I think Harpreet should have been in place of RH, but oh well. And I can't stand Oink any more. So glad for the fact we don't have to jhelo him and his ass errr himass for more than a week now.

One word for this episode - nautanki!

Sidekick said...

girlie girl, i too think amanat is creeping up on raja although my raja love is still strong!

sania, i think amanat's dulcet voice matched the sweet sorrow evoked by the lyrics and that resulted in magic thanks in no small measure to mika showing us how indifferently it can be sung.... that after mika had taken a potshot at amanat's lack of power! then again, as anu g says it maybe something abt the lyrics of the song that touch a chord.

sania, joules thanks for bringing me upto speed on rohit/ronit roy! joules, i watched shootout on a plane last week (i travel a lot!) and thanks to yr ref the tumblers finally clicked on which character he played. sania, now i'm confused abt rohit vs ronit. this one, defi seems the shootout actor - i don't follow indian tv apart fm the music reality shows, so i'm behind the curve on this.

joules, i think sonam shd hire u as a stylist ----- or maybe all of the music shows can do that too and avoid the weekly visual assault :)

Aspi:

It takes guts to admit this kind of teasing. I was also the victim when I was in school.

Saritha:

I agree, the last week's episode of VoI was really lame. It was so ridiculous that I was about to toss out my civil behavior and show some 'Surati' colors. [Surati, people from Surat, are famous for uttering bad words in every sentence they speak. Aspi can probably vouch for that.]

StarVoiceOfIndiaShow said...

And for me, all hopes are lost when Javed Akhtar wrote a song titled 'Dard-E-Disco'. Kalyug is here, finally. [Sorry for the VoI rant but I am pissed.]

Aspi said...

Rohit Roy is pretty cool normally but on JDJ he tends to be a bit obnoxious (without meaning to I'm sure). Ronit is the guy everyone on JDJ calls the SRK of TV. Hilarious - which reminds me, must do a post of that circus soon enough.

girlie girl said...

I'm originally from Surat, and i can second what you said SVOIS! hehe

Saritha said...

I watched half of last week's VoI and like meg says 'it's effn boring'...I can't help but chk this place every now and then for some fun.Gosh,Aspi!I dont want SRGMP to end next week.Who's gonna keep me company while Iam watching the now ridiculous VoI.

I empathize with you,J...sorry Aspi for bashing VoI on SRGMP post.

hey J,I thought dard-e-disco is a silly but catchy phrase, nahi?

Talking of latest soundtrack,I am not able to take the Saawariya's 'masha-allah' out of my mind. Not sure if it's b'coz of Kunal's voice or Ranbir's visual....chee chee Iam going bonkers over a guy who is 4 yrs younger to me.....'Niranjan' is rt...Ghor Kalyug.

Sidekick, before you take ur next flight and are subjected to movie 'Dus Kahaniya',we'll clear ur doubt.

Rohit Roy is the one in 'shootout..' and 'Dus....'.
Ronit roy,his brother is Mihir from 'kyunki'.Also if anyone remembers he featured in a hit silly number 'First time dekha toh hum ko gaya, second time mein love ho gaya'.I know this one b'coz it always pops up while playing antakshari.

Kanan said...

Hey Saritha, good start there! I remember "first time dekha" song too. Ronit Roy is the dude from Jaan Tere Naam. I remember watching this flick years ago in cinema. "Yeh aakha India jaanta hai hum tum pe marta hai dil ka cheez hai jaanam apni jaan tere naam karta hai" such a silly college love story. Other songs from the same movie are "kal college band ho jaayega tum apne ghar ko jaaoge", "in the morning by the sea" lol some whacko songs this film had. But I think "hum laakh chhupaye pyaar magar duniya ko pata chal jaayega" was cute. :) hero-heroine rolling in piles of dry grass on a ranch or something like that. Here's pic of both the brothers at Ronit's wedding (Ronit on left and Rohit on the right).

Sidekick said...

saritha, kanan.... shukriya. i'm now thoroughly prepared for dus kahaniyan - for whenever i can see it on the plane :)

The circus of the Special Visitors seemed to overwhelm the actual singing, I thought.

Is this a metaphor for what Dus Kahaniya will be like? Too many characters trying to grab our attention in too little time? All a blur???

There was also an interview with Adesh Srivastava who was cribbing that JDJ was supposed to be for non-dancers, but there were dancers and actors....He was sulking saying that he shoudl have been given more points since he was a non-dancer. he went on to say that in VOI, Toshi is a trained singer, and Harshit is not, so they give more points to Harshit blah blah!!! Now that he is on the other side of the fence, he is going all whine-whine.Maybe we will see him behave better on VOI!

Pity Aneek won't get his due from people like me because of Hairy Him. One thing that bugs the sh** out of me is all the guys on these talent shows diving at the feet of everyone who comes on stage, though.

I did a bit of introspection to find out WHY I thought it was Kanwaljeet's boss's DAUGHTER instead of colleague, even though my mental image of this girl was her trying to show Neena Gupta what to do at work when Kanwaljeet gets her a job in his firm. I mean, you don't usually see films or soaps that show people working with their boss' kids.

Turns out there WAS a boss's daughter in Saans.....small role though. Neena Gupta's boss had Neelima Aziz as his daughter, who decides to be a witness against her dad when N. Gupta sues her boss. The same Neelima Aziz who played Shehnaaz in Phir Wohi Talaash aired on Sundays forever back. Ahh the nostalgia is killing me...

Aspi could we please have a post on soap operas of yore when TV meant DD?

That IS an unfortunate outfit. What's even more unfortunate is that it's custom and all....????!!!!
Turns out she bought the cloth, got it DYED, embroidered and stitched. DUDE, you don't have to go through so much effort to get an UGLY outfit, please.

H&R, magnificant! I'm all for little, sidey details in the entertainment of choice. So this is right up my alley.

In terms of TV, SRGMP and II3 were the first TV shows I've watched end to end for an entire season. Not sure if I can do that again. I occasionally watch JDJ and will post on that soon.

But feel free to write something that I can post here.

I'm with Megan -- utterly confused. But hey, I'll go with it... we might be too young to remember such things ;)

Harsh and Raw, I am thoroughly confused now as to what Neelam played. I just remembered her being around.Since she was so much younger than Kanwaljeet,it somehow stuck in my mind.
As for Neelima Azim, if she is the same who used to act as the perky girl in serials of those days, she is the ex-wife of Pankaj Kapoor, and their son is Shahid Kapoor, known more famously as Kareena Kapoor's beau.

For me still he is the winner, RAJA is a real hero and he is the only one deserve to be No.01 but I truly believe tht anek could not win by this type of margin if Zee did not manipulate public votes. I started to watch zee bze of RAJA (when I heard “Alla Ke Bande” )and I now stop watching Zee forever also bze of RAJA. Anyway I congratulate aneek for getting title of SGMP. REAL HERO IS THE HERO OF PEOPLES HEART. I finally like to dedicate following words to you “ OUR HERO RAJA HINDUSTANI”
