The head that grew up

Early on SRGMP when we saw Aditya Narayan he looked poky and nervous. He issued verbal jabs more than he hosted - it sounded like he was reciting carefully rehearsed lines and then getting the hell off camera. Instead of owning his show, he let it take him by the scruff of the neck.

And I've made fun of him all season, which leads me to say a few nice things about him now that the show is over.

On the show itself, his passive hosting allowed the gurus and contestants to take center stage. Yes, he was wooden (hey that acting career might be a problem, son) and asked the same darn question of everyone over and over again but he did a mean dance and he didn't sing bad either.

More importantly, he had an amiable presence - smiling his way through almost everything and leading several of those terrific, uncoordinated opening dances. Often guests on the show would strike up a banter with him - highlighting him in ways no host could hope for.

For all his timidness, Head came into his own when it mattered the most - in the Grand Finale.

Hosting a huge, long, live show with panache, he kept a good leash on it - often filling in blank spaces by moving things along. He had time to engineer a touching father-son moment and cranked out a couple of mimed song and dances.

In a fine homage to SRGMP's cheesiness, he pretended to play the piano and left in mid-key to grab a couple of backup dancers' baahein.

When Himesh was basking in Aneek's win by issuing another long bhaashan, Head deftly put the spotlight on the guy who finished second - Raja Hasan. And very pointedly touted him as the perennial favorite. Later he veritably cut off Himesh when he had outstayed his welcome - talking over him and leaving the winning guru blurting life lessons into a dead mike.

Good work Head! Show Grade: B. Finale Grade: A

I would give Aditya an Aplus for the very fact that he managed to outtalk Himesh on the final day.I mean, thats the ultimate!
We had a family reunion today, and all the aunts and grandmas were raving about him. They found him a very good host. They say he behaves very prim-n-propah, and talks to the seniors with so much respect. I can see them quietly saying 'I wish he was a Tamil Iyer boy, we would have made him our son-in-law'!!
Anyway we r going to see more of him on Little Champs.

Aspi, why no captions?

hmmm...He defintely has hosted de show very professionally....But he always reminds me of Shaan..does he copy him?
PS:y is he called 'Head'?

Manish said...

Head really asserted himself in the finals as he knew that Himesh no longer would be on the show - he's gone forever. And possibly he had Zee's backing to cut HR short.

Head has been taught a lot of lessons by the "Head Master" His Himeshness of the Besharmiya Clan.

Host karna sikhna hai to Besharmiya join karo.

Suno Sunao Mauj Manao...

suggestions for the Vision of SRGMP 2009 -

1. Head will be wearing a baseball cap..
2. Will shout - rishton ki buniyaad, saraswati maa..and triangle etc.
3. Will be able to outshout the Mentors/Gurus
4. Will start singing Nasally
5. Will wear revealing outfits with shaved chest (Men and Women will go swoon).
6. Will shout highest TRP show at the drop of a hat...

I am so looking forward to it :)

anu g, couldn't think of anything to say. I had a sad morning :(

On the other hand: anyone see a captionless image here feel free to suggest something. I'll put it up.

Hey Aspi,

Why do you call him 'head'? I have been wondering about it for some time now and I could not find any reference on past posts.

Aspi said...

Its quite silly actually. Here is the relevant post - 2nd last para.

girlie girl said...

And besides, he looks like a 'Head' instead of an 'Aditya'! lol!

m said...

i don;t really like him or dislike him..i hate the way he talks..and he thinks he's quite a catch and am like no way

girlie girl said...

Not to mention he's as tall as a hobbit!

m said...

but hobbits are cute what with their huge hairy feet and homo erotic dialogues..

what does Aditya have except chicken legs and yudhviran?

girlie girl said...

and dont forget the earrings!! Those crack me up...Cant believe he thinks he can pull that off!!

m said...

and don't forget the pink pants he wore when kareena was the guest..

for that fashion crime he needs to be locked away for life

OzAngel said...

the pink pants were ke-yooot.

Well, Head has been damned with faint praise.... at least until the finale when he redeemed himself somewhat! Anu g, I'm surprised Head made such a strong impression on the Tamil maamis! To me he seemed affable but in such an insipid and eminently forgettable way! But in the finale he drowned HR out in the only way possible - ignored him and simply continued the show. For that alone, nice job Aditya!!

Manish, how reliable is the news on HR being out? Certainly seems like ID's outburst angered Zee and provoked a strong response: http://www.mumbaimirror.com/net/mmpaper.aspx?page=article§id=12&contentid=2007101720071017022614953790936e

Aspi, soon u will need a FAQ section with links to posts on how the names Head, Himanshu et al came to be :)

Aspi said...

sidekick, thx for the link. Much noisy bitching but Darbar's noise sounds like sour grapes. Boss, kaam phir kaha se milega? Its not like he's signing films left and right.

his stylist sucks totally, dude, get a new stylist. and quit changing ur hairstyle every couple of seconds. it aint looking gd.
i was thinking that it was mauli behind all these terrible hairstyles until my friend pointed out to my that he has a stylist.

but u gotta give him credit for the cutting off HR in the finale. he hasn't realised how much everyone appreciates him for this. at the start he used to use his, uh, HEAD, a lot, bobbing it around and making me wanna crack up totally. now he doesn't really do that. PHEW.

but i still stick to my point that he needs a new stylist. fast.

now let's see who he'll be linked with next in lil champs. hmmm maybe that's why the age limit was only 12 yrs unlike last time, it was 16 yrs if i'm not wrong hahaha they prolly don't want him to be LINKED with kids.... but lets see. in c2008 too. tsk tsk, what will mauli's reaction be if she sees him linked up with a girl every season??? hahahaha

A look inside the Narayan home with cheesy narration and shoddy production values. But Aditya is cute.

the thing about Head that cracked me up was when he used to recite the voting info in English for the phoren audiences. Why did he fake the American accent? Was it a joke or was he seriously aping the accent?

Aspi said...

mind rush, I believe that was a Brit accent picked up during some tenure in a university. Still, sounded hilarious. There's a B4U VJ who does something similar - must blog about that dude one of these days.

Sidekick, I was also quite surprised to find them all very impressed by him. They were all raving about his good manners and sweet talk! I tried telling them that he is not as innocent as he looks. I remember watching a movie of his where he acted as Salman's son, and he came across as a very precocious child. But oh no, they said that he is really good.I preferred leaving them to their blissful opinions.

My brother has just informed me that some kid in his English class gave a speech on Macbeth which went along the lines of this..."Hi, I is Macbeth. One day Duncan came to my house for a sleepover..." (I asked him if the poor boy was attempting a comedy routine and was informed that the kid was serious. Perhaps the teacher could have put these comments on his feedback sheet-- "superb, outstanding, mindblowing, fantastic" because those words never really meant anything anyway

Now excuse me while I go play my keyboard and do a dress rehearsal to my first performance on Lil Champs. I'll be singing Grace Kelly by Mika.

Not Mika Mehndi. That is soooo beneath me. I'm talking about this Mika

my boyfriend from high school used to be into comic books etc and every now and again we used to go to this comic book store and the guy there used to creep me out, not because he was weird but because he was so normal.

then one day we went there and there was some other guy and i missed him like a sore tooth and i asked "where's the other guy?" and he said "he jumped off the *** bridge and got run over by a car" (traffic bridge) i was like "o rly? sounds messy".. the guy gave me an evil look, i didn't know how to respond. i felt really bad, i was expecting something like "he resigned and now is a freelance artist", so i was SHOCKED

m said...

i have told you guys once before about my experience at a comic book/sci fi convention eh? how i was doing PR for a video game company? and was walking amidst the geeks talking about consoles that i have never touched or played my whole life???? with a tight top with the company's logo.. they actually gave us the top and it was 2 size too small i swear..and the instruction was to either wear skinny legs or hot pants.. i chose skinny legs..

and this dude made a comic book character of me and he made my boobs look twice as big, i was so disturbed by it.

Shekhar Ki Deewani said...

Meg, wud love to imagine...hehe..ur caricature wid double size boobs..lol..sumthin similar to the last post??

And if you haven't figured it out already - that guy who did a sketch of you was Manish.

i swear most of the "enhancements" were just in his fantasies. it was disturbing

girlie girl said...

Nice article qwitiqqx! I cant believe that whatever ID said is going this far. I thought it would just die after a day or two...but this is starting to affect the singers who, I'm sure refuse to get into it in the first place.

Anonymous said...

girlie girl yea... ID shouldn't drag the singers into his *issue* with Zee TV, imagine Mauli and Aneek's predicament. on one side they have zee tv, whom they have signed a contract with. on the otherhand, they have the POWERS OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY aka ID and HR......... bet they are regretting ever joining srgmp.

anw here you go... another article. it has a very valid point about gender biases.

girlie girl said...

That's an interesting article. I agree with the part that in the last srgmp, Vinit was definitely the better singer out of the final two, yet because of where Debojit was from, and the drama that him and his wife created, he became more popular and ended up winning. I dont hear ID complaining about that...I agree that Amanat should've won based on talent, or Raja should've won based on popularity, but he cannot criticize, considering his 'chela' won last time, due to the ridiculous drama!

anu g said...

There was a news article in the TOI showing a foto of Qazi with a very muscled physique. He is possibly trying to get into acting. Of course every musician who is anti-voting keeps referring to Qazi cos he is one guy who was really bad at singing.
There was a show calld Fame X after Gurukul where a guy called Rehan won. He was very good. A couple of days ago, there was a TV news cippling about Ismail's Dandiya programme at Surat. I saw Rehan and Raja with Ismail!

rather than look for flaws and poke fun, think about it, how many 20 year olds would have the poise and guts to go out there and MC, sing, dance, hold fort... Aditya you are fantastic, ignore all narrow minded criticisms from people who may have nothing to show for themselves except antagonism for someone who has made it!

anon, i'm not giving up my right to poke fun at anything or anyone (and clearly u're a head fan!), but i've got to say i've a new appreciation for Head's hosting talents. watching abhaas on VOI-CU hosting at an unbearably high decibel level and an unwaveringly OTT enthusiasm level made me see Head in a whole new light. all told, i thought Head did a decent job and at least his hosting didn't feel like nails scratching on chalkboard.
