Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs: First Look

When I finally found time to watch Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs on Zee TV this week, I had one of the following reactions when watching a kid sing.

  1. Kid, you have talent

  2. Aww, you're cute (this happened only once)

  3. Bacchu, your parents love you a little too much

  4. Sweet Mother of God! Are your parents tone deaf!

  5. Hey, are you even a kid?

Here is the fun of watching this show. When your friends' kids (heck, even throw your acquaintances in there) perform - because you know them and are terribly fond of them, you feel like clapping and giving them shabashi. But put a bunch of strange kids in front of me and the situation now changes dramatically. Its not that I'm judging them - how could one anyway?! But its much funnier to watch for sure.

Not that there wasn't talent to be seen. The Indian kids seemed to do pretty well for themselves. Some of them even sounded like adults. And clearly they had spent a good part of their lives learning how to sing.

But then the phoren kids were ushered in by Head, who at one point invited a kid from "Middle East Bahrain" ostensibly so we wouldn't confuse it with that Bahrain in Europe or America. And just then, all hell broke loose.

A procession of expat kids came up and sang in surs that could only be described as runaway trains. Poor Sonu Nigam was left shaking his head. You could tell Suresh Wadkar does this for a living because he became absolutely still - his face an inscrutable mask.

One mother looked like she had been struck by lightening listening to her own girl sing. Another appeared to be channeling the Force and wishing for the moment to get over quickly. (Neither kid made it to the competitive round).

As part of the selection process Sonu got on stage and said the equivalent of this: You guys were terrible. But because your parents have dragged you down here from so far away and I don't want to end up as that meanie Anu Malik on that other show - I'll pick four of you.

Let the games begin!

Aspi, your captions are genius! LOL!

Sonu Nigam had so many wierd expressions on his face the whole time....too many kids and too much noise.

I feel bad for the kids whose moms looked SOOO invested in their every word and nuance. Those kids must have gotten a shouting at the end of the show. Thankfully, I did not witness any tears.

Sorry to say this...but I thought: "These kids can't sing to save their lives!! What were these parents thinking?" Then I figured that maybe these kids came to India to celebrate Id or Dusherra and their parents just casually strolled them over to the competition.

Aspi, the captions were terrific as usual. I watched only the second half of the International episode and I was horrified. We were shocked to see that the parents enjoyed the kids screeching.I think Mindrush is right, parents were just taking a chance since they were anyway in india. But please parents, its not fair to let ur children become targets of ridicule just becos u want publicity!

aspi, agree with mind rush. yr captions are guaranteed to bring on the chuckles..... the post does too and i'm wondering if shd start watching the baccha party this early just to enjoy the commentary fully. i thought i'd join the party once the initial weeding out is done coz i hate to feel like a big fat meanie when i wince in pain at wee ones!

sonu doesn't seem to mince words when he critiques the adults, so this must be quite the painful initiation for the newbie dad!

Thats right Sidekick.Even I feel its terrible to criticise kids.Thats why I think its the responsibilty of parents to be sure their kids can atleast sing in sur.

I did see the last one in 2006 and some of the kids were par excellence..I think, one is surprised that a kid can sing like that and therefore one tends to get carried away..I mean Sanchita and Diwakar were reasonably good..some other's like Abhrokanti lost out early surprisingly..

This time around the lad from lucknow(Tanmay, I think) sang in sur without making a single mistake!! Tanmay looks like he is going to be a strong competitor(slightly apprehensive about this early prognosis...I bet on Mauli similarly for SRGMP and after the first round she forgot about singing)..But the competition has not picked up as yet and I agree Suresh and Sonu look slightly jaded already...hopefully they will bring in Himesh later and make this contest more interesting :)

About the parents supporting the kids...I saw some of them dancing very enthusiastically and think that's really the right way to do it..You can never encourage a singer by shouting at them or criticising them..A lot of praise and patience is needed in this profession...

mom put this to record when we went away for the weekend. We only managed to watch this yesterday cuz we were super bored. I didn't want to at first but it wasn't that bad.

I liked some kids and i can't stand kids who act all adult.

The kid who sang Bijuriya was cute and the kid who sang Chak de phatte, he was AWESOME. I liked the south african kid

the malaysian umm err kid(??) was so bad, i didn't even feel sorry for her. LOL her mom was crying or something.

OMG WHAT'D YOU THINK ABOUT THEIR ATTITUDE?? like at the end they were interviewed and one was like "i sang well but those effin judges didn't know what they were doing" or something like that.. AHAHAHAHAHAHHHHHHHH

Sidekick said...

anu g, in defense of the parents i think for most love blinds...er deafens their ability to detect flaws in their kids' singing esp. if the kid is enthusiastic abt participating or is taking a music class. someone neutral ought to give an opinion on whether these meet the bar or not in entering the competition.

may be we should bring himesh in this show by a wild card entry round for judges ala VIO

Priti said...

Hey....this is such a great motivator. but, like sidekick, I also plan to start watching the show in right earnest, once the initial weeding out is over.
As for H.B. - we can't live with him, we can't live w/o him! Yeppp...I would surely like to see him back (hopefully mellowed down) on the show, along with VS. With VS a tad less diplomatic...to give him where it hurts....That's the sadistic side taking the better of me...Lol

Priti said...

Otherwise, the posts here and the gems that the captions are, always bring in the mighty entertainment!

Aspi, some good news for u!http://www.india-forums.com/bollywood/article.asp?id=1247

Nice article and is enjoyable than the actual show with screaming kids.

I agree with Priti and sidekick, I'll start watching the show once the weeding out is done with. This isnt like American Idol where you can make fun of terrible singers and laugh at them! These are little kids are too innocent to make fun of. Instead, I think what they should do is for the kids who dont sing well, embarrass their parents and make fun of them and put them on the spot!

SkD said...

Hillarious captions Aspi....totally apt:)...all i can say is we really need himesh....wadkar did de himesh once...but uhuh...cudnt...

SkD said...

but frnkly....i did not like the four who were selected...the dard-e-disco kid was good..but wasnt taken...and the Myndblowin mahiya kid was pathetic but dey took her...

anu g, thanks for the link! If I could recommend two rebirth movies to people it would be Karz and Kenneth Branagh's Dead Again, which is an absolute Hitchkokian corker.

Totally new topic--I need some help... A friend's elderly mother called me and asked if I had ever watched a show called 'Jab Love Hua" on Sony. She missed the ending and wants to know how the season ended.
Any insights?

Daddyji I need your love. I am barely few months old and you are busy with these kids.

I wanna spend more time with you.

it's one thing to have over-enthusiastic parents blowing their hopes out of proportion, but I felt so bad for the malaysian girl (who was such an absolutely perfect clone of her mum, it was scary) whose mother seemed to be tight lipped with disapproval all throughout. She looked like she was just praying for it to be over ASAP, while the dad frolicked away obliviously.

agam nigam said...

dont worry sonu . i am here to take care of all the needs of baby nigam .. take care of the goons ..

m said...

yes that mom she looked like she was about to cry.. the dad was rocking out..

Uncle Himesh said...

Sonu Nigam Ji, please hire me as baby nigam's babysitter.

headmistress said...

I wonder what a baby groomed by himesh would turn out like...

m said...

i shudder to even think, something like a cross between O-Neek and Himesh and 70's bollywood character???

cliche spouting alpha baby?

headmistress said...

oh man. I was just reading about a japanese street style book, and one of the styles they describe is 'hime-kei': a person who likes to wear a lot of Disney princess-esque clothes. Now I just have a scary aphex twin-style images in my head of babies clad in pooh bear and disney princess clobber, with himesh's gammy, leering head stuck on top.

though I would like to see a disco-dancing beanie clad baby. with pencilled-on face fuzz.

I want SRGMP 07 back. Little kids who can't sing are annoying. On the other hand, they're cute... some of them anyway....but does that balance out their utterly lacking singing abilities?

Poor Sonu.

Hi Ozangel, Good to know you want SRGMP 07 back, but really am disappointed to know that you did not mention me as the reason.I thought you liked me.

Shekhar Ki Deewani said...

Love u guys for all ur support!
thanks.

amanat_fan said...

hey Aspi, maybe you could temporarily disallow anon posts to get rid of the troll?

girlie girl said...

I agree. All the ridiculous posts are really juvenile and annoying. Megan's right, if you don't like what's being said, then ignore it...it's not necessary to comment and give your opinion on everything! It hurts people's feelings, and even though you think you're being funny, no one's laughing but yourself!

Aspi said...

Sigh! Wasted time today deleting ridiculous comments. I've noticed these show up on posts that are related to SRGMP. Hmmm! Perhaps the best thing would be to disallow comments whenever we talk about Himesh or SRGMP :)

amanat_fan, I could but some people who do come by here post as anonymous but are nice enough to leave their name with the post.

I'll try deleting dumb stuff for now and see what happens.

Hmmmmmm....

Looks like I missed all the action again. Friday morning's are good..no pressure and I can disappear in the afternoons ;)

Aspi Bhai, I would agree with everything but this. You have to pls. allow me to commment when you post about Himesh

As they say in Hindi - Aakhir, mere siwa Himesh ka kaun hai is duniya mein ??

Puuuhhhllleeeaaaaasssseeee

Thank you so much Shekhar. Now, she can be my heroine in Karz remake. Our plan worked! But seriously, had you not been gay, I doubt you would ever help me.

Yes, Himesh, he seriously wished he wasn't gay when he saw skd, but hey, you can't have your cake and eat it too. Anyway, buddy, congrats, you can have her.

Watever guys, stop trading me here...im no draupadi...screw off....
btw, todays Lil champs was really gud...we had de kids singin quite a few classical numbers...de sikh kid sang 'Jaaniya'...really well...'saanware, ramta jogi, nana thug lenge, etc were really nice...reminded me of SRGMP clhhnge..:(...but arent the judges too critical here??i didnt find anything rong wid de kids performance...i felt they shud have been this way for the grown ups at the Challenge 2007......

Anonymous said...

Yea..agree wd you...the judges r a bit more critical..should definitely have been that way for the grown ups.
Shekhar, im happy that u are gay, now atleast my gf will get over u.

doool

spruha1 said...

I really like the way the judges are treating these kids. In the Challenge, some mentors would give you full points yet also wouldn't provide a convincing explanation for why. I think Sonu and Sureshji do a great job pointing out mistakes without deteriorating their confidence.

SkD said...

Yes, definitely...dey r to the point, encouraging, yet, critical...which is good...definitely not like our SRGMP chhlnge dudes..who used to fite their personal battles der...love triangles, voting lochas...rotis and theplas...sheesh.

i hate parents who argue with the judges
