Nach Baliye 3 is a winner

The first thing that strikes you about Nach Baliye 3 (Star Plus) is that the judges - who shape the destiny of a show like this - are composed differently than any of the other shows I've seen.

For one, two of the three are women - both of whom can dance most of the contestants under the table. This gives them both credibility and power. They further enhance this by refraining from giggling and trying to swoon over hunky dancers - an instant respect-loser if there ever was one.

Yes, there is David Dhawan on the podium as well and he does get to - rather inexplicably - sit in the middle. But like you and me, he knows he shouldn't be there and he tries to be really nice about it by keeping things moving along.

So who are these two judges? One of them is Isha Koppikar - who for some reason I can't pinpoint, I dig in spades. Isha is a starlet purveyor of carnal item numbers like "Khalaas" and occasional high profile minor-lead roles as in Don: The Chase Begins where she kept up with Priyanka Chopra effectively despite a rather dowdy dress during a key cabaret routine. Often playing Ms. Nice on the show, she recently wagged a rather stern finger at Pooja Bedi for daring to question her credentials.

The other one is Vaibhavi Merchant - who first appeared on the show with a solo kathak jig that morphed into Dhoom 2's "Crazy Kiya Re". But hey, anyone who puts herself on the line like that without any backup dancers initially to punch up the routine has my admiration. Vaibhavi comes across as someone who is one with her craft - she's constantly addressing the choreographers, always a nice touch. Once in a while, she'll exhibit diva-like behavior but often enough seems personable enough.

On to the hosts: what's a good host on these shows like? Yes, you have to look sharp and be amiable but its not enough. Primarily your job is to explain the show to the viewers and then get the hell out of the way. This seems to be surprisingly tricky - take one look at JDJ's annoying hosts (or the milquetoast Head on SRGMP for that matter) and you get the idea.

NB3 on the other hand has Hussain - who without the added pressure of trying to keep up with Mini Mathur on Indian Idol 3 - unfurls his ability to run a positive and often fun show. He co-hosts with his wife - Tina, who he sometimes can't seem to keep his hands off - and they have pretty good chemistry. You know this because they aren't trying to manufacture fake nok-jhok situations.

Finally, NB3 has Rakhi Sawant. She wisely gets less face time than she is used to - for the fairness of which the producers need to be congratulated. But when she does, I can't stop smiling. Often she'll say something genuinely funny but just as interesting are her efforts to manufacture drama, chato anya people and desperately try to win their approval. As always, combined with some modicum of talent and ambition, this is a potent combination for entertainment.

It wouldn't be unfair to say that Nach Baliye 3 is a better run show than Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. But is it more entertaining? That's hard to say simply because I've seen very little of NB3. For one, the contestants on NB3 appear to be much better dancers than just about anyone on JDJ. This - in my Mir Ranjan Negi-loving book - can be a bad thing.

BTW, sorry no VoI post this week. Saritha is off being a tycoon somewhere but promises to return soon!

i liked last season of nanch baliye because it had some interesting bunch

but this time i don't like it, yeah rakhi entertains us with her bluntness and WTF moments, but she shouldn't be in the show.. she's a known "item girl" (her words) and is a professional dancer and does shows all over India..

you can't put her with bunch of random no name TV actor/actresses because obviously she's gonna dance better and get better scores..

DD is so biased towards that kashmira chick (i can't stand her) and her man.. they are so mediocre.. pooja bedi is annoying too, she thinks she's Demi Moore with her Ashton (*rolls her eyes*)..sorry its more like Liza Minelli with a younger David Gest (ewww)...

i don't like the hosts either, i liked them in nanch baliye (last season as contestants) but Tina's hosting is so contrived and annoying..

farah and deepika are celeb guests this week. I can just imagine Farah liking a dance number and saying "now deepika will go on stage and dance with you" like she is some object.

Deepika will then be on stage looking very awkward

First of all, love reading your blog. Its like my first cuppa in the morning.
The captions are as usual hilarious.
But is Tina a good host....Naaa! I don't thinks so. She is amiable but too sleepy for me.I would prefer head any day considering SRGMP 2007 was head's first show and this is Tina's debut hosting venture too.
Rakhi is good but I found Pooja making the Hanif guy her baliye for the competition too tacky. Are they truly an item?Nahi pata!

m said...

that pooja chick acts like a perky teenager in love for the first time. who does she think she is? Kareena Kapoor the auntyji edition?

Her man was her choreographer in jhalak last season. He looks like he's kissing her butt just to get in the bollywood circle.

Aspi said...

Tania, welcome. I think Tina initially did annoy me but then I thought of Mona Singh and instantly changed my mind.

So between you and Megan, what's the skinny on Pooja and Hanif? He was her choreographer on JDJ last season? So this jodi is second hand goods on NB? The mind boggles!

SkD said...

hehehe...lol..meg...i think pooja's guy is hot...he dances well...i like dis show

SkD said...

and that poor gora guy....sweta's dude...he does evry thing to keep us entertained...

OzAngel said...

Yeah Hanif was Pooja's partner in JDJ last year. They were even in a music video together... it was really random. Not a fan of them.

m said...

i find hanif guy too fruity and too in your face to be hot, he's not my type at all.

yeah the white dude is cool, i like his girl as well, they're my fave.. gotta give the guy kudos for having the guts to wear all those fruity clothes and do all those lame bollywood pelvic thrusts/dance moves.

On another note I got my halloween outfit all ready. I'm dressing up as Mina (from Bram Stocker's dracula)

Leera said...

Yay thank you aspi.

I agree SKD, kudos to alex for supporting his girl so well.

yup P&H are JDJ hand me downs.

I believe shilpa shetty and sanjay leela bhansali were two of the judges of JDJ last season.

Wonder how that went, shilpa giggled and SLB sneered!

Yay for a NB3 post - sorry for being a pain in the ass Aspi. : pouts :

Agreed that Tina looks like a camel and has issues reading the teleprompter. But clearly Hussain is madly in love, and I think it's adorable.

Krushna is Govinda's nephew, hence the chato-ing by David Dhawan of that pair.

Pooja Bedi is so freaking self-righteous and annoying. Also, she and Hanif were the first jodi kicked off JDJ last season I heard. I do think Hanif is kind of handsome though. Pooja has had too much botox. I'm glad they got voted off this week. Their act with the LOC was just plain dumb. And really, how low do you have to go to pout that Rakhi is unusually favored - it's like 'mommy mommy, it's not fair, she has a lollipop and I don't!"

I love Sweta and Alexx. Cho chweet. Not sure about the two xx's - I guess he's more Indian than we thought.

Aamir and Sanjeeda are my other favorite, although more Aamir than Sanjeeda. He's so innocent looking.

There are a few jodis that shouldn't be there for the 'unfairness factor' - first and foremost, as people have mentioned, Rakhi. She can clearly already dance and her baliye ain't too bad either. Hanif is a choreographer and Pooja has done (albeit limitedly) this reality genre before. Kashmira is an item girl too, no? And Krushna probably gets tuitions from mama Govinda. I read somewhere that Sanjeeda has a choreography background too.

Speaking of which - are choreographers necessarily good dancers or is it that they have a good eye for aesthetics in dance? Like, I love Vaibhavi, I love many of the songs that she has choreographed ( BaB, Dhoom 2, Aaja Nachle), but she didn't blow me away on the dance floor. I still have a crush on her though.

The biggest plus point for this show, in my humble opinion, is that they don't pretend to do knock-off western dances. Like waltzing to "Kuch Na Kaho"? Please. At least they're up front and admit much of the stuff is Bollywood-ish, and intended to be as such. And the nutty stuff, like 'touch baliye' is damn amusing to watch.

I miss some of the married couples that were voted off. It's sad and kind of odd that all the pairs that were legit and married got voted off systematically first. Everyone left is just dating. That leads me to the second plus point of the show - I think, like Indian Idol, it really takes you into the personalities of the contestants, and I am a sap for that kind of stuff. NB3 is my winner for sure.

Um, and I've had way too much coffee tonight.

Aspi, one correction to the Betty-Veronica, etc labels. David Dhawan is Jughead in terms of his character.

Aspi said...

Megan, how about going one of these days as that tremendously ignored super-villian Benazir Kaur?

Sania, far from being a pain - I'm glad you introduced me to NB (along with Leera who has been talking about it as well)

Mind Rush, I was thinking clueless principal when I nailed down David Dhawan.

Were you loosing interest in ‘Nach Baliye’ with Tina hosting the show like an amateur? Well, here is some scoop as she has been booted out of the show.

Wizcraft, the producers of ‘Nach Baliye’ were receiving a lot of negative feedback from fans and Star Plus, as Tina was not able to justify her act as an anchor on the show. The TRPs of the show were also getting affected as she lacked the energy and excitement.

On the other hand, Sony Entertainment TV’s ‘Jhalak Dhiklaa Jaa’ has 2 strong hosts; Mona Singh, who sure manages to generate lot of fun and Rohit Roy, who is pretty good and looks quite comfortable in the anchor shoes.

Tina, who had won the ‘Nach Baliye 2’ title last year with hubby Hussain, has surprised the audiences as she lacked the zest and finesse. The exit has sure come as a shock to her but, in life you always can’t be a winner.

spruha1, thanks for posting it, but I've tested that link now and it takes me to the right article.

Perhaps when you click, it is only picking up part of the link - which would take you to the main bollywood blog page or give you an error.

In other words, your link posts work!

Defi on the outside looking in on NB3 thanks to this blog. Aspi, not sure how u do it, but u hit the bulls eye on the captions every single time. loved the betty - veronica -weatherbee one :)

really liked hussain as a host on II3, so i can see why he'd be a good fit here. spruha1, tfs the tina news. now if only tina could be fired as hussain's stylist as well! love is.... wearing egregious too tight velvet sherwani type shirts that show too much man cleavage!

i'll wait for chatpata comments fm everyone on whether sparks flew between farah and vaibhavi ---- the queen is dead (or rather voluntarily retired), long live the queen! farah is pretty dismissive of the current state of choreography in bollywood so it'll be fun to watch the moohphat play nice on the show.

Joules said...

Hussain must really love his wife to sport those alien-looking tight fitting jackets designed by Tina.
Even he must know that those clothes look ridiculous. The guy is a cutie-pie otherwise.

Note to the fashion police in Mumbai. Ban shirtless jackets for men.

Pooja was a horrible dancer on JDJ last year.

Heard Vaibhavi and Saroj Khan don't get along at all. Saroj Khan considers herself the one who made Madhuri Dixit and was miffed that the Chopra's picked Vaibhavi for Aaja Nachle. Saroj also had not so nice things to say about Kajra re.

m said...

saroj khan is annoying old little hag who thinks she knows better than everyone else. I hate her interviews, she expects everyone to kiss her butt and like she is one of those old people who don't like change and complain about "dancing these days are so vulgar"

Excuse me lady but i have seen your choreographed numbers from 90's they were more offensive and vulgar. Hero rubbing his face on the girl's chest, girl shaking her tatas (stuffed with god knows what) moving it up and down making it very obvious. Pelvic thrusts from men. Lame

m said...

omg aspi, please don't banish me from the site... i know you complain about those video mixes too but they ARE vulgar.. they are lame

but i am talking about choreography in movies, and saroj khan complaining about them when she herself has done some vulgar videos is what i meant..

altho she is good too when she gets it right, like nimbooda, dola re etc (except for that move where the ladies look like they're sniffing their underarm)

Aspi said...

I can't banish people from the site even if I wanted to. Not that I'd banish you.

But you know if Google indexes your comments, we'll get all kinds of interesting traffic on this blog.

Sania said...

I thought Vaibhavi did Devdas?

m said...

no saroj khan did dola re dola and the madhuri numbers, vaibhavi did the aish ones like silsila yeh pyar ka etc

OzAngel said...

Saroj Khan is a pain in the butt. She's full of shietz. Vaibhavi knows her stuff... Out of all the dance shows I liked Dance Dance, which used to air a couple of years ago. It had pairs of amateurs dancing to mainly modern numbers. And there was a cute/hot judge, whose name I can't recall...Vaibhavi also was a judge on Dance Dance if I recall correctly...

Sidekick, if u think his clothes are weird, look out for worse:I had mentioned even earlier, Tina's idea of fashion is dyeing her hair to the colour of Hussain's shirt!!!I am not joking!!Saw it in the papers....She came across as one of the nicest people on NB last year.Alas, she hasnt been doin too well as an anchor. But I read in an interview with Hussain that she is being dropped only for the elimination episode cos it doenst require 2 people.

anu g said...

Tania, I am not sure if u got ur reply...the third judge of JDJ was Farah Khan. I find all these choroegraphers loud and brutally frank. She used to keep telling Ajay Jadeja(the cricketer) to keep his hands firm, and not bent like a teapot. The day he was voted out, he was a sport, and gifted a teapot to Farah!!!

Tania said...

Anu
I saw JDJ last year. I was wondering about NB judges.
Agree Ajay was a great sport and Archana and Parmeet were far better than Mona darling considering their Punju UP roots. When Rohit doesn't flaunt his Bong roots why does Mona makes it a point to show off that she is a Punju? Only thing I don't like about Rohit is going "Bade Bhaiyyaaaaaaa".Urmila to me is equivalent to SLB last season. She cannot dance for Pete's sake.I have been seeing the same Rangeela moves in every movie of hers.

Joules said...

Tania, NB last year had Saroj Khan, Malaika Arora and Kunal Kohli(the director of Hum Tum and Fanaa who replaced Farhaan Akhtar from season 1). I agree Kunal Kohli is quite cute.

SLB on KJ show said that Fanaa was the worst and most over rated movie from last year which made Kohli really angry so its not only the girls who have cat fights in bollywood.

Never liked Urmila much but use to admire her dance skills. She is a little pudgy now and looked awful in Mehbooba in the sholay remake.

m said...

I think that was in response to the Fanaa dude saying Black was overrated which it was. In fact Ashutosh G. and a few other directors who i love (Sudhir Mishra I believe was one) said the same thing.

Anyhoo saying Fanaa was HORRIBLE will be an understatement of the year. WTF you can't choose a sensitive subject like terrorism and make some 80's style movie out of it with over the top melodrama and operation to cure blindness (LOL WTF)

but like why would Kohli throw a tizzy over that? I mean does he really think he made a masterpiece?

Sajid Khan apparently thinks his Hey Baby should have been sent to Oscars instead of Eklavya because "it made more money" LOL

most of indian directors are monkeys

Hi Pooja, the intent is to joke around a bit not to offend although I do realize that these are not mutually exclusive a lot of times. So my apologies for offending you.

Second, I am always aware that I'm commenting on things that are being created by others. And that's easier to do than create.

Third, there are multiple ways of setting sail: some gossip, some act, some dance, others - like me - write.

Pooja said...

hey.... i;m not offended at all.,im eternally amused at how seriously people take reality shows... which, for the record is edited to create story lines and drama... more like soap operas... so many times ive seen shots of my self looking angry upset etc inserted at strategic reactionary points when in truth ive not even been sitting in the audience at the time:-) keep blogging. its most entertaining. warm regards Pooja
