Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2007 Grand Finale: The last laugh is barely a chuckle

Its almost given that a show that spun itself to such heights is eventually going to get it wrong. Yet early on in Saturday's Grand Finale, SRGMP showed a tiled image of "great" moments and at its very center it put Akshay in a toothy smile wielding a nanchaku. Wow, I thought to myself - these guys really understand their cheesy appeal, this is going to be a great show!

But SRGMP - by trying to ape a sorry Indian Idol finale - stumbled badly in very basic ways.

These aren't nitpicks: on a show that showcases singing, miming is unacceptable. And apart from Vishal Shekhar, Mussarat and Himesh Reshammiya - every performance was mimed. More importantly it was mimed badly.

This sucked a lot of energy out of the show - rendering the return of all 11 finalists to a mere side show. Not to mention it was embarrassing to watch the audience going wah-wah to the fake singing.

More energy left when the guru interactions were taken out of the equation because lets face it - they provided most of the entertainment on the show with their alpha male "my contestant is bigger than yours" posturing.

None of this stopped Himesh from asserting himself all over the show. Appearing in a cleavage to rival the Grand Canyon, at one point he summoned all the little kids in the arena to cock a snook at security, "break the rules" and rush on to the stage. What a role model Himanshu is turning out to be!

Now I noticed several muchhad types on the stage trying to pass themselves as little kids. This was a genuinely hilarious moment - several guards had to strong arm people off the stage. (Note to fans: take it from someone who's tried it before. When crashing a stage, pretend to be security - bellow orders to the nearest person and you'll make it all the way through)

Although Raja Hasan finally embraced his resemblance to Mithun by singing the greatest song in the history of Indian cinema - Gunmaster G-9 - it was Amanat's presence that I enjoyed the most. Isn't there anything this guy looks bad in? Carrying deliriously tacky outfits with panache, he made the right moves and said the right thing. His gifting of his watch to Ismail Darbar at the end was the show's most touching moment for me.

All told, was Aneek's win a surprise? It would have been if not for yesterday's pre-show in which the leads were announced by Head. But it really shouldn't matter because this contest isn't about who the best singer is anyway - not for me. Its about non-stop tacky entertainment.

After the show, Meena called to say that Himesh has 200-300 hits, a super-hit movie and now this come from behind win for his chela, which will make him insufferable going forward.

Yes, and I look forward to that!

WORST DAY OF THE MONTH!

first monkey boy wins then i go to see BB and no EFFIN TRAILOR OF JODHA AKBAR.. I threw a major tantrum and left.. then they had LCMD next door so we went in there and they didn't show the trailor either..WTF then we went back to BB and watched it halfway through..then we got so bored we decided to come back home..and as we left we saw bunch of people walk out of LCMD grumbling LOL

so now dad's gonna ring the manager dude tomorrow and see what he can do LOL

Aspi,Ha ha ur post and captions were much more entertaining than the show itself.(so whats new?).
I loved the one where Himesh pulls the mike. It was hilarious and exasperating to watch him keep yanking the mike and claiming credit for Aneek's win even while u could hear Aditya shouting out trying to continue with his compering.
I am very glad for Poonam that she was awarded, though I wish she got a music contract or a cash gift instead.
Its a pity the show has got over.Of course Little Champs is coming on, but I dont think its nice to be gossipping about kids.
Well, great job done on SRGMP!

m said...

yeah I will feel bad dissing the kids!!! and i wonder who the mentors will be.. i dont think i will bother watching it if it doesn't have Vishal shakky as mentors..

I think after this emphatic win, Himesh is going to be revered as a visionary and a trend setter.

3 people(VS+ID) and the best talent could not win, while HR wove patterns with ease and guile - love triangles, women supporters and bhai-bhai na raha... bhai WAH!!

Isme romance hai, isme sex appeal hai, phamily derama hai, chatpata masala....bole to super duper hit...Apdu Saregamapa bau saru ne motu TRP show che kem?

Long Live His Himeshness the King of First Day First Show.

VS and ID are most probably writing their obituaries tonight :*(

eah, the episode was definitely disappointing! I had higher expectations-I too thought that they wouldn't lip synch their way through the songs! Oh, and did anyone else notice how Vishal was a little more than pissed off when Raja didn't win and stood in back, staring at his cell phone! Good ol' Shekhar had to bring Raja up in front on stage and congratulate him for his 2nd place win and the other 2 contestants!
One of the highlights of the show were the shots out into the audience where you'd see rows of empty seats (more so in the beginning-good old IST!!) and shots of aunties and little kids looking BORED to death wondering when this cheese fest was going to end. Man...it was bad enough watching it at home, I don't think I could have watched it live!!! But having said that, I'm def. going miss the show!! Also, I think they mentioned that Sonu Nigam and Pritam are going to be the judges for the Kids version starting next week.

payal said...

Oooh just read the Trib article! So nice to see the story in a local paper. Aspi, dude, we're like neighbors!!! I'm originally from Schaumburg and now live in Bartlett!:) Glad to see your favorite, Aneek, won!

amanat_fan said...

It's a pity that the Tribune story chose to spin the competition as an Indo-Pak hatred thing. If anything, the surprising thing was the unexpected high level of bhaichaara.

It probably makes sense to have a big live tamasha if you want to make money? Ticket sales for one? One probably shouldn't grudge Zee their revenue-maximising ways. They are not a charitable organization.

I think they announced the judges of the next SRGMP at one point (Sonu Nigam and somebody else).

By the way, thanks for a great blog Aspi. Like thousands of other lurkers I'm sure, I've regularly looked it up after watching SRGMP, and have hugely enjoyed your good-humored take on things. As ID might say, poore dus marks and all the best!

Well i hope I don't offend anyone by saying this but i feel the minorities will never win a competition like these, Amanat is a Pakistani and Raja is Muslim.

They do have a lot of open minded fans. But in a wide scheme of things, will a common man want either one of them to win?

I find the result really difficult to handle because I do feel there is a lot of biasness behind it. The least deserving won and I don't think the singing is a factor in his winning. It is a sad situation.

anu g said...

Anon, I dont think we should bring in religion/region into this.(I would be going against my own statement by saying this but if u think there was a bias, then how come there were two Muslims in the final? By your logic, they shoud have got out long ago, while non-Muslims like Poonam should have remained.)
Results on Reality shows are always very unpredictable. We have seen this oh-so-often in so many different reality shows.
As for the deserving candidate, that is also a very subjective choice. I for one felt that the runners-up of both II2 and II3 were much better than the winners. So did many others.
Its just that people who have better voting power win--whichever part of the world they may be from.
I hope u would put such doubts to rest.

anu g said...

Talking about reality shows, there was an article in the newspaper yesterday where famous people were asked who the winner of SRGMP would be.The music director Anand Raj Anand had an interesting take on this. He said there are so many shows happening and so many winners. He says that 10 years later, there should be a show where we get to see what these winners have achieved over the years and where they stand, and then we will know who the true winner is! Very sensible!

Anonymous said...

Meg, how come you and Mauli are majoring in the same subject?

Joules said...

I found it better than Indian Idol specially when the gurus were introduced. Its always fun to watch VS on the stage. Their energy is contagious. Shekhar looked good. My husband calls VS beauty and the beast.

What's this love Saregamapa outfit designers have with long bath robe looking coats? Sometimes they put Raja in a white one where he looks like a surgeon wannabe.

And they always wanna put Sumedha in that stupid Sridevi style body hugging suit with a wrap.

Poonam for once looked good. She had tamed her hair. It did'nt look like a ghosla.

Anonymous said...

m... by monkey boy are you referring to andrew symonds?

Anonymous said...

Alot of you complain about your favourite not winning, well let me quote michael scott on this "deal with it". Obviously your favourite, was raja or amanat, but think about it, there are other people out there who's favourite was aneek. I mean cmon he must have had a pretty big fan following to win over raja. The point is your favourite is not necesserily the best, it is only you who percieves him as the best, just like an aneek fans percieve aneek as the best. So by you saying that aneek had the least talent out of the 3, is not a fact, it is something you think and sure theres others out there that share your opinion, but obviously not enough, since he won!.... If you don't like aneek don't go around saying he sucked, he obviously didnt since he won srgmp bangla and srgmp challenge, the only person that probably does suck or has no talent is you!

Shekhar Ki Deewani said...

Dude Anonymous...are u tryin to say Debojit was also an excellent choice???
Never mind that...guys...whether u like it or not...religious bias is still very much prevalent...i have couple of freinds who say dey dint want amanat to win cuz hez pakistani..or raja cuz hes muslim...if NRIs cud talk like dat [cuz we live wid diff nationalities]...imagine a common man...true, oink is talented...BUT..does not have all the qualities required to be a winner....all de songs he sang sounded just like sonu nigam....whereas raja and amanat cud sing in any tune ppl wanted..of the lot...amanat hardly had any song in which he flopped..now, this decsion is going to lead to a bad impression aboutt he indian janta to the entire world..and guys, dont ferfet..we have loads ofextremist political groups in india, esp bbay that wudnt want a pakistani/muslim to win the show...the show organisers cud be under pressure from otther sources...guy, u never know..
as far as trackin the progres sof the guys goes..i agree..lesse wat happens...mebbe amanat wud be seen as a mentor 10 yrs later like Shekhoo jaan:-)

Shekhar Ki Deewani said...

And btw, for all you Shekhoo jaan fans...[also Vishal]...Head just messaged me that they might be mentoring Saregamapa 2009 challenge..as dey have it during alternate years.
Mann cant wait to see Shekhoo:(

Sidekick said...

aspi, the finale didn't live upto the hype but yr post did --- barbie pran, bo derek and homeless enron exec: very funny :D

the costumes kept me in the game - i was in danger of dozing off. kept wondering when HR's shirt would slip to reveal more cleavage, Akshay Kumar was more modest coz his scarf served as something of a coverup. But what was with the jacket unbuttoned at the waist to reveal his belly?

Joules, was waiting for yr fashion roundup and i wasn't disappointed! Slinky bathrobes and sridevi like bad 80s outfit indeed :D

Sidekick said...

anu g, well said. i think anon1 and SKD are right that in India people do align along linguistic, regional, religious, sectarian lines. One sees it in politics all the time. However the winner is usually the one with the most financial backing - the one that can buy the most votes. in this case, the one whose supporters can buy the most SMSs. It is to the show's credit that Zee managed to assemble 3 top flight singers who were all worthy of the title. Of course in politics, its rare that we get away so lightly - more's the pity!

SKD, thanks for the update, but it begs the question who's judging the 2008 show in place of V-S

Shekhar Ki Deewani said...

Head had sent me the follwoing message
"challenge is more likely to come back in early '09. as in odd years, 05/ 07/ 09. vishal/shekar might come back yes it is a possibility"
So, there wont be any challnge 2008...hmmlong wait to see my Shekhoo:(

Shekhar Ki Deewani said...

Head=Aditya Narayan

Sidekick said...

Thanks, SKD. Now that is surprising! Zee is willing to let the goose that lays the golden TRPs (that beat even the saas-bahu shows!) be inactive for a whole year? Doesn't make much business sense to me!

Rupal said...

I missed the finale; could not bring myself to watch the recording. Watched parts of it, though...

But, I agree with a ARA ... Come back after 10 years with these winners to see their acheivements.

BTW, I have been really curious where is HM's Chela, last year's runner up Vineet of Challenge 2005. HM couldn't stop raving about his talent and that he was going to be the best singer in the coming years ... yada, yada, yada.

I know Aspi did not watch Challenge 2005. Manish, Sarita, Sidekick, Anu G, any one?

Shekhar Ki Deewani said...

Hye guys,Esp Sidekick....we didnt have a Challenge 2006...dey keep havin it alternate years..mebbe to have a gap for the Kids challenge..plus, der is a lot of work that goes behind this contest...the contestant search itself starts at the beginiing of the year..lekin the lean year is taken as preparation year..concept..sponsors..mentor..etc..u see..mentors also r so busy in deir evryday activity...and also, it keeps the class of the show..der will be too mnay singers and all of dem will end up like one album wonders..or rather one song wonders..

Sidekick said...

aah... thanks again SKD! Tells u how woeful my knowledge is!

rupal, sorry can't help. like aspi, i started watching only this yr at first to figure out what kept folks in india glued to these shows every time i visited. i found out with a vengance when i joined their ranks :)

more generally, i guess after their 15 mins. of fame, despite the leg up in terms of increased exposure, its a rough and rocky road ahead. the odds of any of them making it big is low. even a shreya ghoshal got there coz SLB was maverick enuf to roll the dice.

Aspi said...

I think Sidekick has it right with the SMS voting scenario. You can't negative vote in this competition which prevents minority groups from getting shafted. But you can abuse positive votes - which is what happens all the time.

People voting with regional bias is not as unsubtle as you think. Let's say I'm a north indian and some dude (say Punja-B) comes and sings something that touches my heart. It leaves someone from Chennai cold. I vote for Punja-B but Chennai-dude doesn't. Does that count as regional voting?

Shekhar Ki Deewani said...

Very true Aspi....i just read the Tribune article..which is ironically a fact....also, if u guys remember, Raja sang "Sapne mein milti hai" last week..and he was made to sing it three times...uncut..{correct me if i am wrong}...den why was Amanat's second performance edited??

anu g said...

I had brought up this subject earlier, and other than Aspi and me, I dont think anybody actually answered. How many of us who discuss, rather dissect this whole show actually vote? So r we fair in crying foul?
I have to admit that I have voted only about 4-5 times in all, but the winners are those who receive votes en-masse.So in these shows its only money which wins.

anu g said...

I watched that episode and heard Amanat sing thrice. Whats this about Amanat's song being edited?

anu g said...

SKD, I had read an interview with Vishal where he said that he would never again judge a show. I am not sure if he was speaking for ur Shekoo as well.

Saritha said...

I personally think winning the title or even making it to the top 3 doesn't mean they'll get a red carpet welcome into the industry. It prob will help them get recognized easily amidst 1000's of newbies but thats it.....it still is a struggle.

IMHO, it was Himesh's victory and thats what matterd all the time.He lost c2005 and he needed to win this time. Why?Back then Him was only a composer with a couple of hits as a singer. Now he's a composer, singer and an actor.Only way to salve his mt.everst like ego is to make him win.I think if Raja had continued in Him's gharan,he wud have won it.As simple as that.

Can that still take away anything from Aneek.I dont think so.He IS a good singer. He can copy Sonu, can also add variations when needed. Will he succeed? No one can assure that.....himesh?No way.he's too busy with his Acting projects to waste ant time on a newcomer...chela hua toh kya hua?

Annek entered the comp as a fine, finished product.Zee and him saw the potential in this boy...all he need then was branding and who else can provide that better than Himesh.Himesh today is A saleble brand(I hate to say that, but it's true)....he polished, groomed, taught aneek all the tricks of the trade...transformed him from bhaiyya to saiyya and made sure that Aneek gets all the limelight. So I wouldn't be surprised if Aneek's fan base increased thanks to Himesh.

I really want to see how many of them will turn into Kunal Ganjawalas,Shreay Goshals or Sunidhi Chahans.

Rupal,

I've not seen C2005 either. But I read somewhere that Himesh re-recorded Vineet's song in his own voice for some album and jeopardized his career or something like that.

1.I used to vote evryday..i mean i spent like 1 hour everyday continuously voting online for Amanat..and i know a lot of people who did the same for their fav contestant..please check the posts on Facebook Saregamapa group.{I dunno bout orkut, as it is blocked in the Gulf}
2.i think u saw an online version of Amanat's performance..which is unedited...the version that was telecast on ZTV was the edited one..
3. I really hope Shekhoo or VS come to do the mentoring again..they were the best impartial people on the show..I do not want Himesh thgh..
Btw, I only told you wat Aditya had msged me...so lets hope VS do come on de show again.
SHEKHOO: PLEASE COME BACK..WE ALL {ESP.. ME}..NEED YOU!!

Shekhar Ki Deewani said...

Rupal...I think ur right....Hima$$ was supporting Oink fiercely cuz He himself wanted his gharana to win...chela hua toh kya hua???Where is Vineet???

anu g said...

Wah, Saritha! Great comments.
I am told that most of these guys make their money in shows, especially abroad. So i guess u r all potential clients!!But how long will that last?
It seems Himesh takes along Vineet on some of his shows (but the egoist that he is, does he ever give them a chance to take the mike?). I had also read about Him rerecording a song sung by Vineet.

My personal opinion is that the runner ups should also be given some prize.(The little champs runners-up were given some prize-money ). Poor guys they also struggle so much, and finally they are simply dumped.... After all the channels are making so much money out of this contest.

I remember I was in school when Rakesh Sharma , the first indian astronaut went to space. His back-up Ravish Malhotra went thru the whole training. But nobody speaks of him. I remember feeling so bad for that guy. Thats how it is for these runners-up.Poor guys!

anu g said...

SKD, Wow! I am impressed,u voted that many times...so go ahead with ur comments...u have the right to crib!
I am a desi, so watched the prog on zee tv. I remember watching it thrice! The first time he was rudely interrupted by Himesh-like Mika. The second time Sanjay Gupta asked him to sing( and said "U sing, and u sing all alone").The third time I think it was ur Shekoo who asked him to sing.I am generally not very good with my memory but since he sang thats song well,I remember watching it.

Rupal said...

Makes me wonder at times, how in the world was Himesh successful...as a singer, given his nasal voice...really do hope for his acting career, he is a one film wonder.

anu g said...

Sidekick I forgot to tell u that I am so impressed that u took the trouble to go to a Telugu friend to get the right word for thanks!!!Honoured!!

Sidekick said...

anu g, good point! i haven't voted at all despite being fascinated by all these shows! but then i have no complaints ; folks like SKD likely have a much bigger stake and voice!

saritha, g8 analysis. figure HR can make a bundle as a mktg consultant shd showbiz ever prove to be fickle :)

SKD, I think the international feed is an edited version of the India feed which usually carries more of the nok-jhok and tamasha which is why anu g in india saw the amanat perf 3 times while the international audience didn't.

Shekhar Ki Deewani said...

That says a lot really..I don't see him making any mark in Bollywood, maybe in regional music industry wherever Oink is from. but not in bollywood. There is sonu, shaan, KK etc etc and i don't see them retiring anytime soon. Oink brings nothing new to the table..

When amanat was announced 2nd runner-up, I WAS SO PISSED.

When aneek was announced WINNER, I WAS EVEN MORE PISSED.

The choreographers couldn't have chosen worse steps for Poonam's dance. Cut the girl some slack and give her easier steps can't you?

Mauli and Sumedha and Junaid and Amanat and Aditya looked good though.

Btw what's up with Aneek's love story? He said 'Sir I love you' right? ROFL!!!!!

himass lost no opportunity in putting down raja in the last few episode with an eye to the finals and most of the public just got tired of poonam's sad story . by bringing it up again and again (did they ask her?she looked most uncomfortable everytime he brought up the issue)and most important took away the limelight from her own voice and achievements.they could have shown how an ordinary girl came up the hard way AFTER she got eliminated.these days the focus is more on where the participant is from or his social status rather than good plain old fashioned singing that saregama was famous for in sonu nigam's days that gave us sunidhi and kunal ganjawala..any surprise that the singers these days are not to be heard later like sanddeep acharya after their use to the channel is done?

That was a TERRIBLE finale! I agree with you Minnie, how the hell can you lip sync when you are competing for a SINGING competition?! Such Idiots at that srgmp...and there is plenty of proof of their stupidity, 1st having HR as a guru and giving him his own mic...2nd for getting off-the-street darji's to dress those poor kids. and 3, the terrible highlights they gave Raja and Amanat.

I'm so upset Amanat lost. He was a marvelous singer and I think out of all three of them, he deserved to win because he had consistently grown and proved himself over, and over, and over again. I know Aneek was a good singer too, but he didnt really improve from his first performance. Whereas you can see the progress that Amanat made!

Aspi, Loved your blog as always though...Bo Derek and Homeless Enron Exec comment was hysterical! And you're a local celebrity now, after the Trib article! So, how's fame treating you, Aspi?! Are you getting free stuff yet?? :D

Famous and free stuff?! I couldn't even get a copy of the paper at the stands on Saturday :(

aww...well if it's an Indian guy there, you just talk to him about the show and BAM, you'll have your paper, plus the Redeye!! LOL

Hi everyone! I hope you guys don't think "who is this incredibly odd lady trying to post messages on aspisdrift with us" because it seems like you guys have a wonderful little community tucked away in this corner of the web.

As an intro, I'm a HUGE Raja-VS fan. I agree that Shekhar is very, very hot but am personally a Massive Vishal fan because I think he's quick thinking and yet steadfast- a lethal combination! *I've already seen some of you guys' posts on other forums and stuff-- megan you're famous, need I say more?

Anyway I'll be back to make more posts on this blog. In the meantime kids, stay smiley, stay happy and lets work on spreading the VS love/way of thought throughout the world!

Keep the Raja-VS pride alive!

Lots of love my darls!

I agree with you totally. Amaanat is the most deserving candidate to win, if you have to look at singing alone. Not to say that Raja and Aneek are bad, they are both wonderful singers. My heart is sore that Amaanat has lost, but in a way its good. This doesn't tie him up to any contract with Zee or SRGM and he can sign and sing with whoever he wants. Same goes for Raja.
But these contestants have come a long way. I am happy for them

hey ozangel thanks girl..fellow VSian *muahh*

i am famous? yeah for my notoriety heheh which other forums??? please let me know

OzAngel said...

Oh no, no not notoriety! You're just famous, plain and simple. In a good way! But I love VS, their music, their protege Raja, their way of life, take on life... love it all!

And the other forum was IF, where I have made only so many posts that you can count on your fingers-- but I did follow it quite closely in the past.

IF is pretty lame now though.
We need more himesh besharmiya bashers. And what is the deal with people putting smiley faces next to the most sarcastic posts? Like what are they trying to do- confuse people or just try to give some tough love? Either way, it's quite annoying.

That Shekhar R was not me. And it doesn't sound like Megan either although she's smart enough to sometimes not sound like her sounding like someone.
