Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa gets bitchy

Boy, JDJ got decidedly chilly last week. Here I was thinking the only friction on a tepid show like this could come by way of milking tension between the judges. But why bother when a number of grumpy celebrities are at hand!

Last week's highly random insertion of Prachi back into the show by way of wild card split JDJ into two camps, whether you liked it or not. And the infighting - which sadly could not be captured on camera for our entertainment - resulted in some delicious bitching during the pre-performance contestant interviews.

In the end, Ronit Roy - riding a wave of unpopularity among his peers - caught a combination of low marks and fewer votes to spin out of the show. And while he talked about his tenure on the show in the very graceful way he tends to, it was fun to watch the rest of the lined up contestants squirm behind him.

Anyway, on to the only thing I wait for on this show: Mir Ranjan Negi!

In his first dance, Negi started by teasing us by swishing his backside with a towel - an orange and red one. He twirled it around and put it around his shoulders, barely catching his balance. Then Negi proceeded to gargle, brush his teeth and put deodorant under his arms. This he did perfunctorily, like he really wanted to get back to that towel routine.

Moments later he framed himself in a mock window and in tune with "Chand ka tukda" he held up a paper mache moon. This he first held the wrong way, but was chakit enough to fix the direction in moments. This had me already laughing constantly. Yet more tremendous dancing ensued - its hard to describe, kind of like a person teetering between stumbling and dancing.

Jeetendra expressed his disappointment by saying: "This wasn't you!" I disagree my Jumping Jack. That was exactly Negi and to prove me right, he did another dance.

This time he did Shammi Kapoor's Junglee only he was dressed up as a honky tonk version of Elvis - big sideburns and all. He wore a red banyan and displayed a distinct cleavage. And at one point - I speak nothing but the truth here - he patted himself down while twisting his hips. Why? I have no idea - but it looked great!

The judges, stinging from the loss of some of their favorite contestants, tore into him. This forced Negi to play his trump card - a twisted ankle which resulted in much pain that he strove through manfully in this routine. Still, he walked away looking like he had been struck by lightening.

Thankfully Shiamak Davar was absent from the show and didn't have to see any of this - although poor fill-in judge Bipasha Basu did have to sit through both performances with a straight face. And she did it so well, my respect for her has just gone through the roof.

Ditto on the respect to BIps. I haven't always liked her work but boy does she deliver in person.

She said exactly what she saw and with no squirming, diplomacy or giggling.
And she only said Mindblowing once!

I have to say inspite of the Aaja Nachle crew on NB3 the show this week was boring and tepid. Thank god for a double dose of Negimania.

I am laughing hyterically as I read this review...hats off to Aspi for capturing the madcap circus that Negi has turned JDJ into!!

Was sorry to see Ronit go. He came across as a gentleman and one who could dance well. I say this because he was the only contestant who fully tried to share the limelight with his choreographer Nicole.

I don't know how you watch JDJ. When I see Mr. Negi on screen, I have to literally cover my eyes so that I don't feel embarrassed. [I have yet to watch complete performance of Mr. Negi] Whoever thought of bringing Negi on this show was some evil genius.

I watch the show only to see Sandhya and her partner. I think they are really good.

BTW, I haven't seen all the episodes so I am curious as to why Ronit was unpopular, what did he do?

Ronit came across as a Mr. Jekyll and Hyde sort. On one hand he would never ask for votes and show utmost humility on stage, and on the other hand he would show both temper and arrogance in the practice videos, and seem very rough with his choreographer.

Inspite of the mixed messages they made a pretty good dancing pair.

I was mighty pissed off with the wildcard entry to pacify Madam K. And for what , some K soap again on Sony which always starts off being "DIFFERENT".
But Negi was hilarious especially in "Mere saamne wali khidki me". Even my 5 year old can do a better Nursery rhyme dance then him.And what with the towel.Looked like a Bombay Dyeing ad to me.

Finally saw a whole JDJ episode. Ronit has a great body - how old is he? Was sorry to see him go. Although I felt like technically he was good but lacked emotions that the Indian junta so loves.

I enjoyed Prachi-Deepak's 'ae mera dil' performance. That was hilarious and creative.

The less said about Negi-ji the better. The red shirt was not doing him any favors. The cleavage-beer gut combo was shocking.

I hate that Jay B. guy. He is NOT CUTE and tries to act oh-so cute. What is his claim to fame? His partner on the other hand is a cutie.

So did Ekta loose again? Her bahu is in, but her golden boy is out?

J, I watch Negi because I have bad taste.

Something tells me he's about to leave us - which will be a shame. There will be nothing left to look forward to on JDJ :(

But I must say the Jeetu-Ekta-Balaji nexus and its influence on the show is somewhat fascinating to behold.

Aspi,
You haven't had this much fun after SRGMP and it shows on this post.

Caps - write up = a story

I didn't have to go thru the post & I was laughing already and when I read the whole thing,I was ROFL.All this, and I've not the seen the episode yet.

For ur sake(and eventually for our sake),I sincerely hope Mr.Negi sticks around for few more weeks-this man is doing wonders to ur creativity.

I just saw one or two episodes of JDJ.Few things I noticed-

1)Deepak,prachi's choreographer is a talented, nice guy.He was on NB2 with Jodi-Yash and gauri who finished second. He is very good with salsa.Have they tried it yet?

2)Jay is terribly annoying. Can someone show him the way out, pls.

3)His partner,Bindi, was on JDJ1 with the infamous Aakash saigal(who turned up to support Ronit, acc to the caps).May be she's always teamed up with annoying guys.My sympathies.

4)Prachi is ekta's doe-eyed girl-she calls Prachi 'Rani Mukherjee of TV'(not starting a new debate:)...).So,she might stay for a while this time, may be even win the title.

Aspi said...

Sheesh! We should call Ekta the Farah Khan of TV.

I forgot to say earlier that the Prachi-Deepak "double-dance" to spoof the new Don was brilliant in it's creativity. I have a lot of newly developed respect for this choreographer.

Deepak in drag totally outshone miss prachi . Maybe Nach Baliye could have picked up some pointers on tasteful drag from him.

He made a fine Helen. The trick I suppose is to go for it and not pretend you're uncomfortable just to prove your manliness.

He was dressed as kareena kapoor, prachi was helen...LOL.Prachi will be upset if she reads that!

Aspi said...

I stand corrected. Now that I think about it - I do remember a blond wig on Prachi during the jig.

Aspi, loved the write up!!
Sonali's arrogance on the show is really getting to me!! I hated how she was giving the judges so much attitude after they said her dress was too long for them to see her footwork. And didn't she also claim to be "the biggest celebrity on the show." Ummm...WTF is she talking about.
Also, I was ROFL when Prachi gave Ronit that freaky look. What in the world was she so angry about?

Jhalak Dikhlaa jaa was finally starting to loosen up and be fun but alas Shiamak the wax figurine is back and I think he's gonna stifle the flow with his pseudo-shuddh-hindisms

I totally agree with Joules, Ronit does have a very sexy body, and he can dance, which is more than i can say for Prachi, Jay and Negi :)

Gotta say, the coreographers are brilliant, i love Bindi's energy and Deepak's creativity. I also think sandhya's partner is quite cute.

*sigh* now that Ronit is out... i will only watch the show for the choreographers.

Can't they bring him back as a wild card and get of miss "I am only 18, *giggle giggle* *screech!*"

Sonali seems to have taken her loss rather badly. She is now all over news channels. I saw one interview where she says that she joined the show tho she was getting so many film offers, fame, lots of money, publicity(translated from Hindi)! She says that she and Toby were the most sportive contestants(?) When asked who she think deserved to win, she replied oh-so-modestly(!), "Everyone is equally talented, but I think Sonali and Toby were the best and deserved to win"!!!!

Saritha said...

uh-oh!Some people shd do themselves a favor and not take part in such competitions, when they think they are the best.Sonali has done more harm to her public image than she could have imagined.I really liked her until I saw her on JDJ.Her striking perf in 'Mission Kashmir' to her bubbly persona in 'Dil chahta hai',I liked the way she adapted to diff roles with such ease.

Very true Saritha. Even Ronit's image has taken a beating. So had Kashmira's after her stint at Big Boss.(Now she is trying to und that image). I think the star who benefited the most from reality shows was Rakhi Sawant, after Bigg Boss!

Saritha said...

But her last perf was terrific. For a non-dancer the way she pointed her toes and fingers and with that sexy look on her face,it was fantastic. What's with all the eliminated contestants, they usually do well the day they are leaving, they dance and sing(if it's a singing comp) like never before.Ofcourse, like Joules once said, for the voters 'woh bahut acche insaan hai' is all that matters.

If Sandhya and Prachi are in the finals,it could be Prachi, unless Sandhya would want to adjust her attitude a lil bit.
