Nach Baliye 3: A Shahrukh gathers moss

A lot of times men do stuff that they think is cool with their hair but actually looks ridiculous. You're never sure why - perhaps a Man Hair Silly gene will be discovered some day.

Now you could say: Aspi, you're just jealous - but you know what I'm talking about. Like say those fantastic comb overs that makes their possessor feel pleased and confident but actually causes suppressed chuckles all around.

Shahrukh Khan has one of those confounding things going with his little pony tail. The first time I saw it, it took my several minutes to figure out it was actually there. And after that I wasted more time trying to figure out why it was there. Ah yes, I am aware there are hair control issues, but hasn't anyone heard of hairspray? And haven't I got enough trivial stuff to worry about without getting side-tracked like this?

But in any case, I digress. SRK's appearance on Nach Baliye to promote OSO, but mostly as a favor from Farah Khan, was much fun to watch. Why so? Because SRK is terribly articulate - in Hindi (and some Urdu), he's disarmingly engaging and he was whole-heartedly funny. By not doing things guardedly - as big stars often seem to do - he made himself feel accessible.

It could have been my imagination, but I thought the producers played a laugh track in that episode to punch up SRK's funnier comments. How would I know this? For one, a lot (not all) of the laughter was too controlled and timed really well. And whenever I would hear the laughter but look at the audience I couldn't match the sound with the expression on everyone's faces.

Be that as it may, probably the only thing a little overwrought about SRK's appearance was that he kept insisting he was a poor dancer. And then he went on to execute some fine moves in the curtain stage dance. In return he was generally good natured and came up with a crowd-pleasing formula: give one point more than the best points handed out by any judge. After all, no one really came to see SRK for his dance-judging abilities.

I was also curious to see how much Rakhi Sawant would chato Shahrukh Khan. But this turned out to be a damp squib as Rakhi simply rushed SRK like a gawking teen without much of a plan (note to Rakhi: look into enrolling in the House of Reshammiya Finishing School). As with all things Rakhi related that I'm finding out: the hype supersedes reality. Its the same way with her dance - I know she's good and everyone praises her to the skies, but when she actually dances I don't enjoy it quite as much I expect to.

Instead, I'm developing a furious fondness for her partner Abhishek. Mostly because he just sits there dressed outrageously wearing a sweetly goofy smile. And don't let that tabby cat look fool you - he's a pretty good dancer, probably even better than Rakhi herself.

He came dressed in a shimmery blue outfit with a tremendous cleavage decorated with a honking silver pendant. He kept smiling constantly. And when it was his turn to dance, he grabbed a guitar and swung it around like Rajesh Khanna used to swing his younger heroines. Forget Rakhi! Go, my man!

I like Aamir-Sanjida and among female dancers Sanjeeda is very good based on the 2 or 3 episodes that I've seen.Esp liked her 'Radha kaise na jale' perf.

As long as Rakhi is around,Abhishek will be over shadowed, but, hey he can't complain. After all,it was Ms.Sawant who declared on TV ki'Mere zindagi mein bhi ek ladka hai' during 'Big Boss' and Abhishek dude got that superstar entry on the show.

Aspi,if you haven't seen the "Big Boss',then you have not witnessed the Reality TV in India and hence have missed the chance to know the real Rakhi Sawant. That show was (like everyone says) baap of all soaps/shows.

Aspi, I loved that "Man hair silly gene" phrase! Maybe there is one awright! I just hate what Abhishek does with that hair band (even tho' some people think he looks cool). But SRK's mop of hair is the pits. What is he trying to achieve by tying them up in a pony tail, is beyond my comprehension. Looks yukk. It looks even more ridiculous after he has gotten into those six pack abs; his face looks shrunken and the hair seem to be all that is left of his face.
But why do men fret so much over their 'now balding head'. And do some really funny things. Some guys cover it with a strand that goes all the way from one side of their head to the other, which looks ridiculous; the poor strand gets sparser and sparser as it goes on it's journey in a vain attempt to cover the head!

Saritha, afsos but I missed that Big Boss. Although I did hear about it.

Priti, great description of what is only one of many different types of combovers. Actually that one is most fun to watch after a strong gust of wind. Its like a bald guy with really long hair coming out from behind one ear.

Speaking of combovers, do you guys know that the process is actually patented? Check out this link. Apparently it meets the criteria of a patent: process, methodology, description, plausibility etc. LOL.

Missed revenue opporutnity for you, Aspi....

How about adding Bappida, Govinda, and Arjun Rampal (in OSO) to this "Sunsilk Shampoo" gang? You'll earn a corporate sponsor for Drift!

I give the SRK "pony-male" two thumbs down. Call the naaii. Just do it.

Priti, I am with you. Don't like the Abhishek hair-band hair at all. I blame Ash for the hairband. It came around the same time, they started dating.

Shahrukh specially with his trim look should get a trimmer haircut. Oh, how I miss the Shahrukh of fauji days. His face is a good example for a "No smoking" campaign. Kids this is how you will look when you are 42 if you keep smoking.

Man, how do you enforce a patent like that?

meg said...

well how could sweta and alex get eliminated..its rigging for sure because

they add this week's judges score and last week's audience votes

and this week they got the highest points from the judges

so even if they got the lowest votes, they won't be out because the average ranking will be somewhere in the middle will it not????

Aspi, thanks so much to u and Saritha for all the entertainment and updates.
A note on ur favourite Abhishek(the Raakhi guy).He was a contestant on a reality programme called Zee Cinestar ki Khoj where he lost, but was greatly apreciated for his dancing.H ewas from a small town I thought. I next saw him as the angry young friend when Rakhi was all over the press after the infamous Mika episode. So some guys who dream big manage to make it big....!

SRK does speak very well and is extremely witty. I have enjoyed award functions when he is hosting otherwise Indian award functions (or any other award functions) tend to be a snooze fest.

Can't wait for this week's Negi avtaar report.

Expect some fireworks from NB3 as well. They r introducing a 11th jodi to join the top 4 jodis. I think all this is so unfair. This new pair just happily waltzs in without going thru the struggle of so many episodes.Meg, what do u have to say to this?

m said...

i don't care much about the 11th jodi to be honest.. because i seriously don't think its fair that rakhi and her man are competing against all those non dancers ... also don't think its fair how they brought kashmeera etc in and sweta -alex didn't even get a wildcard chance

i just hope the 11th jodi end up bring good looking and there is some major drama..

Leera said...

Ok I am going to come out and say it, I enjoyed SRK's presence on NB3 exponentially more than his screen presence on Om Shanti Om.

As far as the rat tail goes, I fear what's next. Will mullets make a comeback, circa Arun Govil in Ramamyana?

One can only hope not.

This is the 11th jodi:http://www.india-forums.com/tellybuzz/article.asp?id=1322

anu g, you are our new sherlock!

Just as I thought: the celebrities are people I don't know - just like everyone else on this show minus Rakhi Sawant.

megan said...

megan is not impressed!!! i don't know those two and they don't look good..

anu g said...

Aspi, poor ACDoyle. U r being unfair to him by comparing me with his muse.I have precisely 3 sites which I visit to get info on these shows. So I am no great Holmes, though I woudlnt mind being one:).

anu g said...

Megan u have brought back unfond memories of Anu Malik talking in the third person...'Annu is not impressed'! Anyways dont worry, I dont think anyone knows them...possibly like VOI, they will be brought back, and then thrown out before the finals.

Aspi said...

Yaar, anu g, Sherlock himself had very few sources. And he saw the same things everyone else did. But his ability to tie it all together was unique.

Thus, you are the Sherlock Khan of the entertainment industry.

madhuri is gonna be the guest this week and she looks HORRID!

she is wearing those ugly new trend in salwar kameez Mughal-e-azam in some gaudy color

her hair looks fried!

m said...

i talk in third person quite a lot.. specially when i'm drunk

i am a bit eccentric

Aspi said...

Madhuri is on NB?! Cool, that will be worth watching.

You know, running your show through the (Indian) Holiday season has its advantages. The big movies open then and you get some marquee stars on the show.

I have also noted that VoI has been counter-programming celebrity guests by focussing on "serious", "music-oriented" guests. Not dissing them, just an observation.

m said...

yeah i suppose they are big celebs-none of them i like though.. usually the celebs i adore don't pimp themselves out on shows like these..

Meg, U had mentioned that Swetha and Alex expected their elimination.Possibly they were relieved too?Sorry to leave u fuming even more, but just check out what was published in a local newspaper here:

Sweta-Alexx get bad vibes

no one would have imagined Sweta Keshwani and Alexx would survive for so long on Nach Baliye. They were the odd ones out, but they have remained on the show due to their hard work and talent. Though that’s reason to rejoice, there’s cause for concern too. after Kashmira and Krushna’s elimination, Sweta feels she has been getting bad vibes from other contestants. Says Sweta, "There are too many ill feelings from contestants, especially after the last elimination. It started with Pooja and Hanif and during Kashmira and Krushna’s elimination I noticed the remarks and expressions were even more negative. No one comes out and talks about it in the open, but snide comments are made, because they all feel we don’t deserve to be on the show. We too were equally shocked about elimination of talented contestants, but it wasn’t in our hands. I know we aren’t all that talented but we do work hard and lucky perhaps. I am upset about eliminations of more talented and experienced couples but we don’t want any blame for them being voted out either."

Aspi said...

Hey thanks for typing that out for us, anu g. Juicy!

anu g said...

Sorry Aspi, butI didnt type it out. It appeared in the local newspaper, and I just cut and pasted it from the online version. Oh, what all I seem to be doing for the drift!
