Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 2: Discordant Dancing

This week on JDJ, Mir Ranjan Negi - that unending stream of entertainment - lost his way. He did two Amitabh Bachchan dances. Now this might sound like a good idea - associating with a senior Bollywood actor would make people aware of your seniority plus you only have to learn one or two nukkad dancing steps. But this strategy backfired badly on the Mir. It not only sucked out the energy from his usually madcap performances, but forced his lovely and talented partner to under-dance.

Fortunately, public ne unko bacha diya. And for that, I'm grateful to the public (especially those who finally stopped sending their SMSs to Negi and sent it to the right shortcode instead).

Luckily, some juicy bitching ensued on the show, resulting in much compensatory entertainment. It's no secret that the wild card insertion of Prachi through some influence management has split the JDJ contestants into two camps. The anti-Prachi camp reportedly led by Sonali (tied for master whiner along with Jay Bhanushali) and Sandhya Mridul (fast becoming the item dance muffin on the show).

Prachi's performances have been appropriately split - she is a pretty decent dancer but her overall performances seem to vary greatly between average and excellent. Of course, there is the added pressure of exiting again ignominiously after all the fuss. And so when the results are announced or heck even before the scores are handed out, everyone seems to tense up a little more than you'd expect.

There were enjoyable sleazy moments - and I'm not even counting Sandhya Mridul's writhing in "Mast Mahol". First, Jay Bhanushali did two dances - one was a Jeetu classic with Sridevi and then a Govinda special. And because he is such a stiff dancer, he did a terrific Jeetu.

But after the second one, before anyone could really even ask, he volunteered an encore and proceeded to hug a stripper's pole dressed up like Superman. Thousands of darshaks now will not eat chocolate, read Superman comics or have appetite for sex for weeks.

Later yet, Prachi invited Dino Morea for a dance. And much to everyone's surprise Dino Morea ignored the invitation and instead started stripping. Fortunately this ended at the third button of his shirt as Dino - probably sick at all the attention his female costars were getting - tried hard to flaunt his own hotness.

This week resulted in the exit of Sonali "I'm the biggest celebrity here" Kulkarni. Having raised everyone's hackles with her constant complaining, she proceeded to give a very gracious elimination speech, apologizing to her choreographer Tobby for letting him down.

This new configuration of remaining contestants makes the Prachi camp three units strong leaving Sandhya Mridul in a lonely corner. While Sandhya is a good dancer, her partner Javed is a terrific one and has saved her often via many energetic and eye-catching performances.

The contest now looks like a Prachi vs Sandhya duel - which saddens me because it means Negi is only a chand hapto ka mehmaan. Sob!

ROFL Aspi!U have made my day, I was wary that u would be giving only 'pretentious' reviews on netflicks, and desis like me would be left wondering how to contribute! Thanks for the terrific update. The captions were simply fabulous.I have to say 'Hats off' to ur marvellous sense of humour and wit.

I think its finally the 'diva' of soaps, Ekta who is going to be the real winner........
My, U make the show sound to interesting, I must somehow manage to catch a rerun on tv.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH............Aspi,.......U ROCK!!

Aspi, This blog entry is one of your best entries. I usually laugh when reading your blog but this one takes the cake.

You and I think alike often, but I am jealous how well you can say it on paper and how funny you are saying it.

I agree with you it is Prachi vs. Sandhya duel. Just like last year it was Jassi vs Shweta (oh how much I miss her).

And just like last year Prachi will take the crown as she is the sweeter of the two. Indian's always vote for who comes across as more humble than talented.

Aspi said...

anu g, SkD and Joules: thanks for the encouragement. You will all live to regret it someday :)

Vis-a-vis Prachi vs Sandhya it also comes down to vote bank. And Prachi has an active one (assuming her serial is still on the air and she has a positive story arc going). Whereas Sandhya doesn't have one.

Joules, great point about humble/talented. I think this applies more to women also - I think firebrands intimidate a lot of people.

On another note: I dont think I would ever say this about an Indian tele serial but I absolutely love "Love Story" on Sony.

Its directed by Anurag Basu and you can see hints of the movie Gangster in it.

^^I fall asleep evrytime i try to understand de Love Story crap..sorry Joules....i hate all Sony dramas...yea...also Zee and also Star...i have stopped watching TV altogethr cuz they all suck.....

Aha Aspi not a word about the ever so eloquent Shabanaji's brief and abrupt stint on JDJ.
She refused to shill the movie, chided the contestanst on lipsyncing garcefully and even pricked a couple of holes in Sandhya Mridul's ego with her 'staying in character' comment.

I want to see her on television more. Apparently she's a judge on Sahara's celebrity singing show. Anyone like it or watch it?

Aspi now that your favorite is a reality show judge, maybe a comparision piece between Asmiji and Javed Akhtar (on tv) is due.

Btw brilliant captions Aspi. You need to cut a deal for your own reality show, sort of a desi version of E's 'The Soup'.

Saritha said...

I join the others here-the donald duck and 'icon' caps are lol,Aspi.

1)I feel the show now has come down to strictly choreographer's ability,in my pov.I like Javed too,his body is flexible like a woman and handling an aggressive partner on a day to day basis is no mean task.I want to see him in the finals.

2)With all due respect,it's time for Mr.Negi to wave bye-bye with all the popularity he garnered on the show.Sony might offer him 'Big Boss2' if he leaves now.
His Gentleman Persona is hit with the voters,so that'll help him deal with awkward situations and house members leading to higher TRP's.
More Negi equals more enteratining posts from Aspi. It's a win-win situation.

3)I hate to choose between Bindi and Deepak. Both are V.good, but if Bindi's exit means I don't have to see Jay anymore,I'll let her go.Sorry girl!I loved her pataka perf of Govinda number. She has a cute smile, too.

4)Mausami(who is she?),kaatil looks when Dia came onto the stage was too funny.J or what?

5)I didn't see Dia say Hello to Jeetu.hmm...did she have a spat with Ekta during 'Shootout.....'?

anu g said...

Saritha, I did read that Dia didnt greet Jeetu, and that became a controversy.Dia said that since she knows Shaimak and Urmila personally she hugged them, and she didnt feel it was right to hug a senior. I think Jeetu who was all ready to be hugged by a young lass, was disappointed!Tseems he let his sorrow known,(of course his view was that Dia had disrespected a senior). When Dia wa informed, she called up Jeetu and aplogised.Obviously he had to say its all okay etc etc:).

Aspi, fantabulous captions to quote our genial Mr. Wadkar.

Leera, thanks for the shabana update.I'm a big fan so I'm glad u filled in the azmi blanks. how very arthouse of her to not shill the film! why else was she on the show?

anu g, saritha: hugely amused by jeetu's peeve. of course the poor guy wanted his share of TLC fm the beauteous Dia, esp if it is freely being handed out. BTW, I get that Dia is lovely, but what is her popularity ka raaz? she seems far and away the most loved celeb guest - whether judges or participants, to a man they seem to faun over her.

anu g said...

Sidekick, maybe cos Dia is from Hyderabad:)...sorry that was not-so-funny!!!

Saritha said...

Oh,that explains, anu. It was quite unlike her to not even shake hands or say Hello, since he stood up for the lady like a gentleman.

Sidekick,
Dia is a very warm, articulate person, the quality that is usually groomed during their stint at beauty peagents. It's not unusual to see these celebs be nice and cordial on camera.,but I've seen her in a store in hyd right after she won Miss India 2000(second runner-up).I was with a friend on a market research on consumerism and I instantly recognized the radiant beauty that entered the store.I stared at her,(such a bad a thing to do),to make sure she's Dia.She smiled and walked away ;and I was totally fida.I was so dumb that I didn't even say hello and congratulate her.

All this, when the other consumers were almost getting annoyed and restless answering our questionnaire (10 questions only).

I told my friend abt this after she left and she gave me a piece of her mind for not taking Dia's opinion on the MR(we were conducting) which would have fetched us some celeb status in the company team.evvari gola valladi.

Joules said...

I think she is celeb enough and free enough to make it to these shows. Not sure if that makes sense :)

Leera, I was about to do a quickie post on Shabana's lip synch lessons. Hopefully I'll get to it.

Which reminds me: Sania, if you are reading this, are you extending your review for us or are we ready to go as is?

Mind Rush said...

sidekick and leera, I too am a fan of Shabana...so Aspi, please take that into account before you go off and poke fun at her!

Loved the post. Aspi, you have serious talent for these captions. Keep it up!

BTW, anyone notice how Shiamak Davar made all those comments about "Mother", though this time he was referring to Negi's mom?

He seemed genuinely moved. It also fits with a previous post I did on Davar and his closeness to his. mom

Aspi: I missed this show, but I just wanted to let you know that I love your snap of Shabanaji schooling Sandhya in the art of hero-worship, and am about to link to it from my Shabana blog SLP. I look forward to your promised post about Shabanaji and I'm sure I'll link to that too - I bet the old girl can take whatever you dish out! ;)

filmi geek, thanks! Loved your review of OSO by the way.

Aspi, I cannot stop laughing at the all captions.

Correcting the comment.I meant they are hilarious. May be I am opposite of Shiamak :) Need english classes.

I am sure Prachi is going to top the charts this week.I read that she refused to wear revealing costumes for the cabaret round, and got to hear some snide comments from the judges(?). So she is certain to get the votes of all those who watch the serial where she is the bahu!!

Aspi said...

lata p, anything to make you laugh.

Just don't hate me when I bomb occasionally (notice the ego-driven choice of word to mark frequency).

Miks fans, good news for u! Mika is replacing Suresh Wadkar as Shweta Tiwari's teacher-partner on Jhoom India. I wish I could see that prog. I was watching the news which spent 30 minutes on the drama in jhoom india. Shekar Sumans; partner Sanjivani (the first Z saregamapa winner I think) wasnt very happy with Shabana;s comments, and retorted back.(Does anyone know what was really said?). Mahesh Bhatt walked out.Sanjivani apologised to Shabana and 'paav padoed'.(Thats sickening). Finally alls well???
Mika says he will teach Shwetha to sing, though he knows she cannot sing(what an encouraging teacher:)).And he specifically mentioned that he was going to Jhoom to increase the trps.So watch out for some fireworks!

anu g said...

Lata P, Dont worry about the mistakes. I make so many grammatical and spelling mistakes since I do my two-finger typing in a hurry.People have been kind enough not to mention it. So yours will pass too:).

Saritha said...

I read abt that Shabana Controversy.I don't know what happened,though.But I've seen this-Mahesh Bhatt

With JDJ,will it be Jay Bhakra Banushali's turn to leave now?

anu g said...

Shabana gave the cute egg Suresh a mouthful for passing comments on Shweta Tiwari's singing, er, non-singing ability! The news channels are having a field day showing the wars in reality shows. Suresh in his monotone said that if someone can sing reasonably ok, then he could help them out technically, but since Shwetha has no sur-gyaan at all, she couldnt be helped. He went on and on.This clipping was shown to the contestants and judges on Jhoom India, and Shabana spat fire saying it was absolutely objectionable and nobody could say such things blah blah. Shwetha was was so embarrassed by the comments said that it was Suresh who was losing out!My God!!!Aspi, this is absolutely explosive material, ideal for ur comments and captions!!Why dont u do a post on it:).

Aspi said...

I'm assuming this happened on Jhoom India?

anu g said...

Yes,Aspi, it was on Jhoom India. The news channels give a round-up of the wars on all the reality shows...thats a show in itself:).

anu g said...

I am quite shocked that the no-longer-cute egg Suresh is behaving like a politican. I saw for myself what he had said about Shwetha Tiwari, but just read this interview, and he comes out sounding like a saint....I am so disappointed.Wheres all the goodness in the world!Sigh!!

Good on Shabana for busting bag egg Suresh Wadkar's chops. Despite his stellar judging on SRGMP he's been banished to the sidekick dungeon of misdeeds for his classless behavior!
