Star Apraadhs on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs

Kids can be forgiven for wearing anything. But adults who show up on kiddie shows? What's afflicting them?

Shreyas Talpade Headband Lil ChampsTake SRGMP Lil Champs for example. A week or so ago Shreyas Talpade showed up. Now he has the boy next door looks - which is a polite way of saying he ain't a hunk. And it took me a while to realize that the man had something stuck in his hair. Turned out it was a headband that made it look like he had braided one side of his hair and swung the braid around his head.

This was decidedly uncool - mostly because I racked my brains but couldn't come up with one good explanation of why someone with thick, short hair would need one in the first place. Would you tie barbed-wire down with a naada?

And then last week...but wait I'm getting ahead of myself. First, let me say that I've seen Ayesha Takia in only one film - the time pass curiosity Home Delivery. And I must say I enjoyed her sweetly affecting turn and noted her dewy charm.

Ayesha Takia Lil ChampsWith that movie in mind, I filed Ayesha Takia under "Redonkulously Cute", an impression that stayed in place even after multiple views of her frolicking with Shahid Kapur in school uniforms and doing hip-hop with Ajay Devgan and Irfan Khan on B4U.

So I when heard she would be on SRGMP LC, I tuned in on Saturday. And what did I see? Horrors! Ayesha came looking like a strong whiff of Farida Jalal doing a Helen impression. Later, as the camera panned out, her dress made her look like a jiggly lampshade. I suppose the best way to describe this would be to say it was a look inspired by a lampshade trying to look like Farida Jalal doing a Helen.

Throughout the show, Ayesha adopted a somewhat shrill uptalk-inspired way of speaking to the kids. This saddened me because there seemed to lurk a sweet, smart and good looking woman behind those Fu Manchu eyebrows.

Arshad Warsi Lil ChampsBehen, your make up artist and wardrobe assistant clearly hate you - time to do some fashion headhunting.

However, there were some fun moments as well. Whenever the camera swivelled to a non-Takia target (like a costar or a kid), Ayesha appeared to be cleaning her teeth with her tongue. This amused me considerably, saving me from certain boredom.

Finally, Arshad Warsi - he of the shaggy dog look - materialized wearing what looked like tire marks on his jacket and a pair of jeans that looked like they had been given to a bulldog for playtime. And peppy though Arshad's presence was, he also unveiled a hugely PJ sense of humor. When one contestant coughed, he immediately piped in "Aapki singing bahut *khaas* thee!"

Hilarity!

Aspi, I loved those sweetly sarcastic comments about wardrobe malfunctions on SRGMP.

As for the infamous bi-color, "tyre-striped" coat worn by Arshad, my initial thought was that someone did graffiti on his outfit when he was not looking....

Just delurking to say I enjoy these posts a lot. BTW do you use Tata Sky? That little yellow envelope in a couple of the stills looks very familiar...

aspi, also loved the detailing of fashion missteps. ayesha did indeed look like an unattractive lampshade --lol! the ubiquitious anarkali kurtas are not for everyone. can i also say, i find the perky miss takia (and the perkiness was annoying!) a tad overrated. everyone seemed to rave abt her performance in dor and i was a little underwhelmed. i did however like gul panag's performance very much.

the arshad warsi look - strange jacket, messed up jeans seems all the rage for male movie stars in bollywood. salman khan seems to favor very strange jeans! while on the subject, sonu's fashion is egregious too - weird tee, the strange jeans and jackets combo with his unruly locks falling all over his forehead. will his stylist tell him the scruffy look is not attractive on everyone?

Cool - we have the author of the very entertaining Jabberwock blog amongst us. :) The things that amuse me.. Jai - love your blog!

I feel left out of the Drift :(. The bachhas singing don't entertain me, so I abstain. How is everyone?

Joules said...

sidekick, agree with you on the anarkali kurtas. Specially Ayesha is very busty.

I always think the scruffy look is for the ugly. (hint, hint - Abhishek Bacchan).

According to Men's detail magazine Jeans with stuff on it is so out. I wonder when someone will tell our bollywood stars.

Is there any bollywood personality that dresses well. I think SRK comes close but he has his fashion faux pas too.

girlie girl said...

Sidekick, I agree, the scruffy look is definitely NOT for Sonu...He needs a haircut BADLY!!

When I saw Ayesha Takia on SRGMP-LC I coudlnt come with a word to described how she looked...Aspi, I think you were right on the money with the "lampshade trying to look like Farida Jalal doing a Helen" comment! LOL!

Hilarious Aspi!
Ayesha should really be careful about what she wears. She doesn't have the regular bollywood body! While I like her spontaneity when it comes to acting, her voice modulation is very bad.
And yea...whts up with guys wearing hairbands...its like there are listening to the old-style walkman...with just the earphones on!

Aspi, thanks for clearing up a minor mystery for me. I saw the Shreyas episode and struggled to figure out what was going on with his hair.

As for Ayesha, she just joins the fashion-clueless the leader at the moment seems to be Vidya Balan. Have you seen what she is wearing lately? yikes! I can forgive Ayesha much just for 'Dor'.

I guess when something is a must-have trendsetter you just get one and never mind the rest. Just like the oversize glasses (that cover the entire upper part of your face) that you saw everyone with last year or the ridiculous oversize handbags that all hollywood celebrities are photographed with. Its a puzzle why some of the more waif-like petite stars dont keel over with the weight of the bag.

BTW did anyone catch Ms.Gauri Khan on cover of Vogue India?

Saritha said...

Ms.Zinta makes fewer Fashion mistakes,me thinks.love her dress and purse.

Preity Zinta

Jai, I'm glad you stopped by. Along with Amit Varma, you are my writing hero. And no I don't use Tata Sky. I use the uploads made by the kind people on apnicommunity.com (someone on the drift turned me on to that) and take screen caps.

Meena, I did see Gauri Khan on Vogue - it was all over the place when I was in India. She looks good, no? I think its the little girl dress that makes her long young and vogue-ish. On the other hand, if you've seen her pics elsewhere you know the Vogue cover has had some work done.

Sania, everyone seems to be fine and some of us are recovering from trips to India. But without you, we are always lost :) Haven't seen anything interesting lately you'd like to review for us?

Aspi said...

Saritha, excellent observation about Preity Zinta. She has a formula down which works for her - but I have seen her in some kick ass tacky stuff in Stardust and other filmi magazines that reminded me of Raveena Tandon in her prime.

jj said...

That is an awesome pic of Preity.

Amongst the actresses I think a lot of them have an ok dress sense (or atleast know to consult a fashion designer).

Kareena dresses trendily, Lara looks good in mostly everything she wears, Bipasha looked good in the baby doll dresses last summer, Madhuri looked awesome in the anarkali style suits while promoting AN, Priyanka, Sush carry themselves well, Karisma has finally acquired a sense of style.

The two main actresses whose dress sense is not that great is Rani and Aishwarya. They both are beautiful to look at but their dress sense is neither classic nor trendy.

The worst dresser offscreen definitely are Kajol and Vidya Balan.

In the older generation I always love to see Kiron Kher offscreen. Infact she has used a lot her own sarees and jewellery in her movies.

girlie girl said...

I heart Preity Zinta! She has a great sense of fashion and she knows what looks good on her!

Aspi said...

If megan were around she'd say Vidya Balan suffers from a behenji syndrome.

In any case, a designer to the stars friend of a friend says that of all the actresses who work with him, he has huge respect for Kareena who he calls a genuine beauty with impeccable taste.

I'm not sure he's talking about the Kareena I've seen - but I'm not the professional designer here.

Saritha said...

I know what you're saying,Aspi.I remember those pics in the magazines back in '98,'99 when she made her debut.Over the yrs, though, she learnt a way to cover up her problem areas and accessorize well. She's been doing that for over 5 yrs now which is quiet an achievement in Bollywood.

Preity, just like Bipasha aim at looking fit and not try for a perfect figure.May be that helps them look radiant in anything they wear,b'coz they love their body type.

Joules said...

I would put Lara and Katrina in that category also. They both are beautifully curvaceous without trying to look too thin.

Joules said...

Also one of the things I like about Preity is she dresses for the occassion. Wears a nice dress when at Cannes, wears a western suit when she is bidding for the twenty20 cricket team. She is also one of the few Indian actresses who has said she is embarassed to be dancing in malls or on railway stations in london wearing the most ridiculous bollywood looking clothes when everyone else is out trying to shop or catch the train to work.

Joules said...

ok, I need to go get a life. I am sure I have exceeded my limit for the number of comments per day.

As usual Aspi good job!It took me a while to figure that stuff on Shreya's hair.I think men look ugly with that bands.Girls still like the Sandokan looks. And this was very good oppurtunity for Ayesha to promote herself more than the film.It looked like she walked out of her make up room before he/she could complete his/her job.Aspi,I think you should also write an article on K for Kishore.I am scared that the dead Kishore is really gone spring up in the sets and scream "shut up".And anybody notice how his son Amit Kumar dances.I start singing the barnyard song of wiggles whenever I see him dance.

sidekick said...

ok, maybe i'm missing something here - i thought bipasha does have the perfect figure and priyanka's is pretty darn close too. the idea of priyanka needing to lose 8 kgs seems ludicrous unless of course the role demands it and that's something hollywood actors seems to do all the time - gain and lose weight for their roles.

and joules (i hope u never limit yr comments, btw!), the fact that a stick-like ash in D2 makes a bipasha look "fat" tells me something is seriously screwed up in our notion of attractive body types. the one thing i've always liked abt bollwood is that regular looking attractive women like rani and kajol are hugely popular. kareena's extreme weight loss in my book is unattractive. god forbid that we make the shift to the double zero obsession of the west and produce the figures of angelina, nicole kidman, the olsen twins, paris hilton and the like.

sidekick said...

sania :::Waves:::: .... good to "see" u. what r u watching /reading / listening to now? i'm sure we can share in that just to keep u here :)

Aspi said...

lata p, I have been trying to do something with K for Kishore esp. the episode when Bappi showed up but I got really busy this week. Hopefully soon!

I love Amit Kumar's manicness on the show. Reminds me of a B-grade Kishore Kumar. Plus the parts where the ex-Idol people showed up and croaked was fun to watch.

Aspi said...

I think Priety, Lara, Tanushree and Priyanka are doing fine service for the Sridevi generation.

And I'm sure if Aish had a choice she wouldn't go rail thin - but such are the pressures of trying to go Hollywood. For all the lip service about "real women", all you have to do is watch a Chanel ramp show to realize that all the girls have to look super thin and look drugged out.

Quick update: anu g is stuck in comments hell again and can't post anything. But she misses being part of the action - hopefully we can fix her issue soon.

Saritha said...

I hope anu finds a way to resolve the situation.Missing her.

btw,Aspi,I can't seem to publish my comment the first time.Blogger wants my password again and in case I miss that part and click on publish/preview I end up on an error page.Since anu is using the 'nickname',I wonder what could be the problem?

PS:I'll try Nickname this time

Lara,Katrina,Bipasha and Preity are just fine the way they look. And Priyanka has great body.I love her toned shoulder frame,it's really sad that she has to lose EIGHT KGS for a role.Gosh,I just hope for her sake,'Fashion' turns out to be a big multiplex hit.

Word to Priyanka:Soon after the shoot, start eating....hate to see you anorexic.IMO,Kareena on the other hand looks much younger now.

Joules said...

Kareena is really looking good these days but she is in danger of crossing over to the other side.

girlie girl said...

I think Priyanka is gorgeous...and since she's so tall, it's going to look really weird after she's lost all that weight! I hope she puts it back on once she's done filming...the last thing we need is a stick-figure walking around in the Indian film industry!

BTW, I read somewhere that Ash got Cheek implants and a brow lift...anyone else hear about this??

Saritha said...

This is one rare pic that I've never seen before.Must be 2002 or 2003.Sharukh here looks much better compared to his new skinny look.

Joules said...

Shahrukh is a dapper dresser and does come across as an intelligent person albeit a little arrogant.

Ash's problem is that she is does'nt have a muscular or athletic body. So she yo yo's between being plump and too thin.

megan said...

srgmp is still good but i can't stand most the kids.. ugh except for tanmay, rohanpreet and vibhore why did he have to go..

ayesha is so annoying.. WTF is up with her boobs? they are massive.. she talks too much and tries to be all bubbly and sweet..can't stand the type..

meg said...

okay bollywood fashion

I don't think whats so great about Priyanka, Kareena, Bipasha etc's style? They always play it safe.
Like Priyanka she never takes risks and wears the same kind of dresses all the time with same boring hair.

Kareena can't carry off any outfit, no matter how nice it is she always looks constipated..

Bipasha always dresses skanky and her legs look too muscular and manly.. she needs to get rid of her makeup artist who is always hellbent on making her look like Medusa

megan said...

Sushmita reminds me of one of those soccer moms in california with silicon boobs and old producer husbands' trophy wife #3.

All she needs is a hummer and the look will be complete.

Vidya Balan and Rani Mukherjee - gosh i would be typing about their style or lack there of for ages and ages so I will just stop..

Madhuri - thinks she is stuck in 90's with her big volume of hair.. she also needs to cutdown on botox treatments before she ends up looking like Melanie Griffith

megan said...

Priyanka is a butterface..

sometimes her body looks nice but-her-face" EWW

Aspi said...

Ah, its good to have our poster girl back!

Ok, so its not just stars who r asked to look trim. Now Abhaas Joshi, the young boy-anchor of Voi has been asked (by the producers) to lose weight...poor guy fainted on the sets. I didnt realise that thin=beautiful/handsome. i thought being fit and healthy was more important.
