Man that standard Himesh question is hilarious. Reminds me of Barbra Walters asking everyone "If you could be a tree what tree would you be?"

Do cacti count?

eeeeeeks Himesh looks a bhaloo! Scratch that, bhaloos are cuter!

Poor Rakhi Sawant was 'April Fooled' last nite by some News Channels. She was told that her item-song of Krazy4 had been scrapped.Poor girl was shocked and went ballistic when the journalists asked her how she felt. It was obvious it was a joke.It was clarified this morning in the news. I wonder what she will have to say today. But frankly I dont think its nice when news channels and newspapers fool people like this. Times Of India today says that Beyonce is going to dance for the IPL, and Deepika will dance dressed like a ball, and Ranbir dressed like a bat:). Do they expect us to believe that?

Aspi said...

April 1 is the only day in my life I am glad I'm not in India. The very eye rolling dumbness of it all makes me shudder.

anu g said...

Heres the Beyonce article. But there is a clarification in the end, unlike in the newspaper.

Joules, I am glad Amitabh is actually coming on show.I have been hearing this 'superstar' news since a few weeks. The last time on a show (VOI?) they kept announcing that the coach of Chak de is coming, and after a long wait, it turned out to be Negi!Poor guy, everyone who was waiting to see SRK, were disappointed to see him.

anu g said...

Lady D, I will have to wait until tomorrow to decide whether the news is actually genuine, or it turns out to be just another gag.

The ad agency I worked at once did a very interesting/dumbass/funny thing for April Fool's. I came in bleary-eyed at 9am and there's a chalk outline in our Reception area in the shape of a corpse. For a second I thought a hated colleague had popped off, then I realized it was a joke :-p Alas, said colleague was alive and well....

megan said...

we did that at my school last year.. we made an outline of a dead body and squirted some ketchup and put a box cutter next to it

anu g said...

Lol Pitu:). Everyone seems to be doing it. Preity's Chandigarh team has a rustic-style video sung by Daler.Mallya's Bangalore team is going to have a song with Katrina. Now with Akshay Kumar becoming the ambassador for Delhi Daredevils, its going to be one big filmi show. I was watching an interesting programme called Cricket Controversies on NDTV, and they were saying that with so much of emphasis on entertainment and star value, everyone seems to have forgotten that cricket has to be played too:).

Joules said...

Do bw actors and actresses act these days. They seem to be busy doing some show or the other.

I wish there is a backlash similar to the one cricketers had when they were getting sidetracked with too many endeavours.

Aspi said...

Its a hugely interesting sangam of entertainment. Its not unlike what has happened in the US where you see a tremendous macho posturing associated with every sport (i.e. images of balls burning, superhuman feats, crashing hoop boards). I expect to see a lot more of that - only Bollywood ishtyle.

I'm sure SRK and the others are already thinking of movie or TV show tie-ins. One thing I don't know is: do they own the endorsement rights for each cricketer? I would think not - but they can essentially become a management agency for each cricketer on the team.

anu g said...

I was trying to find some info on the IPL endorsement confusion, and saw this hilarious site. For those who follow cricket, and know what the cricketers r upto outside the field - u will love the captions Aspi.http://blog.iplforums.com/2008/02/29/guess-what-the-ipl-cricketers-will-be-endorsing/

Aspi said...

anu g, will check the Himesh link later. Santabanta not good at work :).

girlie girl, that review is why music reviews annoy me so much. Its one thing to review the music by checking your emotional connection with it - but some structural understanding of music and the ability to articulate it is necessary.

Actually, those are just my outdated views but if that were a blog I'd be much more forgiving.

However, I did enjoy reading it!

girlie girl said...

Aspi, I'm with you...i wouldnt consider that a "review"...its more like "we need to write something for a popular movie" and there have been enough articles on Saifeena and Kareena's bikini shot in the movie

can't wait for your review though...I havent heard any songs yet becuase everytime they show the promos of the film, the only thing they show is Kareena, Saif, Akshay walking...that's it!

Tough luck for SRK. Apparently he had told Shoaib to get some six pack abs, and that every time he took a wicket, he would have to take off his shirt:). No jokes, someone mentioned this on ndtv.

anu g said...

Thanks Joules. She does look wow! How is it that these ladies manage to age so gracefully! I am ageing too...but it shows:).
Let me do the sour grapes act, and say that I read Sridevi;s interview where she said her husband and daughters like her to look thin and pretty, thats why she takes great care of her figure! Thankfully, my family is happy the way I am:).

Joules said...

ha ha, SRK wants Shoaib to copy Brandy Chastain (Girl's soccer team USA). Brandy had some mind-blowing abs though.

Aspi said...

Boy, it must have helped the PCB make their minds about cracking the whip when they found out how much money Shoaib was going to be making.

Sridevi does look great - she almost always does though. But every time I look at a picture of her and Boney K I get the feeling that man is one seriously hen pecked dude.

m said...

sri devi has a michael jackson nose happening but i need the number of her plastic surgeon. I hope he/she is still able to perform surgeries/procedures 15-20 years from now.. :D

Sidekick said...

Joules, thanks! I agree Sridevi looks fabulous. Anu G, I don’t buy her explanation for why she wants to look glamorous: D. Aspi, LOL at the henpecked hubby image! The older daughter looks like a younger Sri b4 the nose job and skin whitening. I wonder what Sridevi would say when 12/13 year old daughter says, “mom I want to get my nose fixed and skin bleached”. Does she go “Yaay! What a great mother daughter outing or does she say beta lets wait until you’re a little older and wiser” (which would seem a tad hypocritical).

Joules since you sent us of to Indiafm – I saw Katrina (wowza!), Bips (nice) and Sameera (oh, dear!). I bought Pitu’s take on why Sameera is wanting, but can’t help feeling a little sorry for her. I agree with anu g – it can’t have been easy to grow up in the shadow of gorgeous didis Sushma and Meghna.

m said...

yeah shame that plastic surgeries don't change your DNA :(

Aspi said...

I'm willing to bet that if Sridevi's daughter enters movies, competitive mom will take over and then plastic surgery might just get treated like another acting class. "Beta, meri saari friends ke bachche ne naak theek karva di hai. Ab tum bachchi nahi rahi"

m said...

i don't know why sri devi even bothers? i mean her husband is anything but "luscious" that someone else might steal him away

whats sad is the female equivalent of her husband (at the same age) would never get the male equivalent of sri devi.. much less famous, she might be virgin forever

Aspi said...

There was hope for a while though back when Dimple ran through a bunch of boys in town. Then she shacked up with Sunny Deol who beat everyone else black and blue and that ended her adventures.

Joules said...

I think Sridevi wants to get back into some kind of acting career and that's why is looking a lot hotter these days. I dont think she was maintaining herself that well before.

Also Madhuri's movie not making it has put a kibosh on hopes of every 40+ actress trying to make a comeback.

Joules said...

sidekick, Yeah Katrina does look awesome. That girl has a curvaceous figure and looks beautiful in whatever she wears.

Bips is overdoing a little these days. Plus I am not a fan of colored contact lenses. Poor Sameera, she may as well give up.

Aspi said...

Joules, you are right. Aaja Nachle killed a lot of hopes for people like Sridevi. Now its back to competing for the Nirupa Roy type roles.

Of course you wouldn't spend so much money looking like that to end up playing a Nirupa Roy. So something has to give. On the other hand, Sridevi *is* sleeping with the producer so I expect a project or two catered to her.

Sidekick said...

aspi, so true.... sridevi is probably already planning the image enhancements, along with the dance classes, dialog lessons and workouts in the gym. actually this was what had me wondering.

joules, i think the aspi is right - the moneybags producer husband can make it all happen for sridevi, not so for mrs nene!

m, i think the boney K-sridevi jodi is the classic mars-venus argument. men want trophy wives and women want husbands who spell security and power. however, a female equivalent of boney k may get the gigolos and a lot of sniggers :)

anu g said...

Sidekick, we will also get to see Sridevi as the judge in the next few reality shows, i guess. Supposed to be great for the image, and lots of money.

Aspi said...

Sheesh, don't get me started on princesses. I just saw Enchanted (more like forced my sons to watch it because I want them to be diverse about their ideas - and to be fair they enjoyed it). who the heck is Tulip Joshi? Is she anyone?

Aspi said...

She is connected to the industry via Aditya Chopra's first wife - which used to be at least worth 10 films a Rani ago.

Pitu said...

meena: Tulip was introduced in the eminently forgettable YRF flick 'Mere yaar ki shaadi hai' starring Jimmy Shergill and oh-so-sad Uday Chopra. She was also seen in 'Matrubhoomi' which I think a total of 5 people on the planet must've seen and Pooja Bhatt's 'Dhoka' recently.

meena said...

gosh, I actually saw that movie mere yaar ki and I remember she was not bad looking - she looked like she just popped out of one the myriad desi tv soaps. But LOL starry tantrums before they are stars? LOL

meena said...

seriously Naseer is starting to annoy me. He has been giving these disdainful interviews about bollywood for ages now. He needs to cut down on the snobbery. Its not like he hasnt done cringe-worthy roles for money either.

Pitu said...

Lol "Oye Oye", anyone? ;-)

Aspi said...

I think Naseer belongs to a different POV generation - those that wanted to compete with Hollywood. Its futile really at this point, the base talent in Hollywood is very rich. So these days even an indie is made with a technical richness that often surpasses a glossy Bollywood production.

The right way to look at Bollywood is as something new - but that also involves giving up phoren-envy.

Amrita said...

Milaard, I object! If Harmaan is Gareebon ka Hrithik then what price Mimoh, 08 mein nikla 80s ka beta?

Aspi said...

Hrithik - California Pizza Kitchen
Harman - Pizza Hut
Mimoh - Frozen Pizza

Joules said...

Lovestory 2050 - Is it just me or the promos of that movie look quite slick - almost hollywoodish?

Joules said...

m, funny you say that about Harman. I feel like Priyanka is trying to emulate Aishwarya. She wears Indian outfits often and is seen with her parents a lot at functions.

Amrita said...

Joules - you know why it looks Hollywoodish? Coz that's the placer promo that they compiled from other sources - like every single sci fi hollywood movie you can think of. :D

Aspi said...

This stuff looks hugely inspired by Time Machine and the bustlng commercial vision of The Fifth Element.

Usually ambitious special effects tend to be cheesy unless you have a lot of money. And in the trailer a few already look cheesy. Moreover in a high stakes movie like this Bollywood might play multiple angles - there might be a maa or two. Or today's maa - kids!

In other words, this might be hugely enjoyable. Its missing Bappi though - a glaring oversight for any futuristic project.

Aspi said...

Amrita, right. If they had any sense of humor they would create a 2050 version of the autoricksha instead of NY style flying yellow cabs that we see in Hollywood futures.

Pitu said...

Krazzy4 loses court case

http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1159310

girlie girl said...

An image of flying autoricksha is hysterical. You know how they alwyas stuff more people in there and there is always someone hanging off the side...i cant imagine rickshawala being able to do that with a flying rickshaw! hehe

Aspi said...

And the funny thing in all of this is that the music of Krazzy 4 sucks!

girlie girl, they should do an autoricksha chase one of these days in a movie I tell you. I loved that ricksha getting blown to bits in (the new) Don and wouldn't mind them showing up everywhere.

anu g said...

Pitu, the Roshans had an out-of-court settlement, with the Ericcson composer Sampath bagging a cool 2 crore rupees! And the cheque was given to him onthe spot. When I was doing the Bollywood power list, I couldn't hear enough about how nice the Roshans were. And so Rajeshbhai swiped a tune or two. But in the end the fact that the settlement was made and its a rare event in Indian Music and no ridiculous sound bites from the Roshans suggest that the Bollywood insiders were right.

Pitu said...

very cool Anu.. I still find it hilarious that Rani with her sandpaper voice (no, I don't think her voice is sexy) will rasp out a dialog in one scene and promptly sing a sugary sweet ballad (courtesy Alka Yagnik) the next. At least, give her a different playback singer yaar! Maybe a Kavita K?

Aspi- I know, 2 crore ka fatka aur itna karke faltoo music lol. Rajesh Roshan has composed some awesome music earlier so why did he even bother to lift? Or is it ki if Hrithik is not starring, then so-so music is fine?

anu g said...

I remember a drifter had mentioned about the prog called Ustadon ka Ustad on Sony. I happened to catch it yday.I fail to understand the format and how it works. Can someone tell me?
I saw VOIs Sumitra and Toshi, Indian Idol's Emon and Amit Paul and Srgmp's Mauli and Raja. Surprisingly most of them didnt seem to sing properly. I think the regular riyaaz during the shows helped them improve then. Now they seem to be singing after a gap and it shows.
Sumitra and Mauli both belong to the item-songs category, so both didnt sound great. For once Mauli looked on as Sumitra sang 'Maiyya Maiyya'.Indian food seems to be suiting Mauli, she looks 'healthy' now.
To my surprise Emon sang quite badly. Amit Paul was by far the best singer where playback quality is concerned.Raja and Toshi of course sing in a different genre, which javed says is purane zamaane ka(?).
VOI won the best team award.(Saritha, wish u were active here, u would have been thrilled).
But after a long time I got to see the tu-tu-main-main of judges.Surprisingly there is no singer in the panel. Theres a lisping know-it-all lyricist Javed, a dancer Saroj Khan , and a wannabe singer Shekar Suman. The two men kept arguing, and it was quite exasperating.
Iam planning to catch the Superstar programme which has Himani and some others on Star Plus. I hope thats better.

On the dubbing end, Vikram Bhatt always likes to dub for the main actor in his movies. He is the voice behind Aftab in Kasoor and Dino in Raaz and John in Aitbar.

What are actors and actresses left to do these days - its not their wardrobe, its not their voice, its not their singing - all they have to do is look pretty. God forbid, hindi movie industry would ever make a movie like "Walk the line".

Good reviews both from rediff and indiafm for "U Me and Hum". I thought it would be breezy romance considering the production house and the actors but it seems like Ajay has tackled a sensitive subject and receives kuddos on his directorial debut.

You know I saw Mimoh at Goa airport on my last trip to India and my first thought was "Man, that Bobby Deol sure let himself go". It took me a few seconds to realize it was Mimoh.

anu g, that sounds like a fun show - I get Sony but don't see it on my program guide. Neither do I see it on that apnicommunity :(. Also that Rakhi Sawant comment is totally hilarious!

Joules, read somewhere that LK Advani gave UMeAurHum a standing ovation. For like 7 minutes. That man needs to go out more - although I'm sure the movie is good.

Did finally watch Hrithik's Krazzy 4 promo. Kids love it!

While watching it struck me - this isn't ordinary motion graphics. Its expensive to do this kind of stuff especially given the detail in thath vid (e.g. note Hrithik's shadow on the CGI floor). The Roshans probably shelled out more money for that than a good part of the movie itself.

I'm more than a little amazed. Actors doing commercials is one thing. But actors doing commercials for another actors film (granted its their production house) is quite another.

anu g said...

Cmon Aspi, he and his dad r goign to make all the money from this movie. So if SRK can sing in the IPL video though he's not going to play cricket, then why cant Hrithik do it for his company. Maybe he wouldnt have done it if there was just one hero.K4 has 4 heroes who are generally sideys, so I guess he didnt mind it.

Aspi said...

anu g, you are right about that. But I was just thinking about the exposure that man puts himself through. Surely with the increased media saturation he has got to be concerned about overexposing himself.

But this overexposure bit might just be an American thing. I think most other cultures (who don't have this undercurrent of counterculture) are much more accepting of their stars' commercial ventures.

Did anyone catch Ustaadon ke Ustaad singing special?

More than the singers it was Shekhar Suman vs Judge Javed, that got my attention. Before the singing even started a B & W 'sankat' moment ensued between judges Javed Akhtar, Saroj Khan and Shekhar Suman. I rubbed my hands in glee.
Soon enough his 'phavoreet' Emon did a did his 'rockstar' rendition of KK's song from Gangster (probably to match his haistyle).
Judge Javed stayed loyal to Emon, clashing with Shekhar Suman who unlike the unfortunate Anu Malik took on JJ and vanquished him with a dose of his own medicine (smirking gyaan).

My respect for SS has shot up, I'll forgive the man cleavage and the flock of seagulls hair for the much needed take down of the formidable JJ.

anu g said...

Leera, any idea of the format of the show? Even i saw part of the singing episode. I am told the semifinal is today? Thats really fast!
'Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar' is a similar singing competition on Star. Whats surprising is that Toshi and Sumitra iyer are on both. And while Sumitra scored the highest in UKU, she scored the lowest among the challengers in JJWS.I am a little unsure about the format of this show too. There r 2 groups - 'champions' (which has winners of shows like Debojeet, Abhijeet, ishmeet etc), and the 'Challengers' who r the runners-up like Rahul Vaidya,Prajakta, Amit Sana, Vineet,Toshi Sumitra etc. On Friday the Challengers sang, and the judges chose the top 3, and then the Champions chose the strongest challenger Prajakta to join the Champions team.On Sat, all the champions sang, and now the public voting is to be done only for the Champions. That means a champion will get out, while the challengers happily sit there. i simply fail to understand the format. This prog is sure to have lots of black and white moments, cos the contestants are asked to comment on each other. Further it will require a lot of scheming, cos its possible the champions will select a weak candidate so that he joins the champions and gets out. I saw Ravinder Ravi, the painter after long. Poor guy, he tried singing a romantic song, and failed miserably. Amit Tandon also failed and was in tears cos his newly-wedded wife was in the audience. Vishal-Shekar gave Amit Sana a firing cos he didnt do riyaz regularly.
Surprisingly the maximum score of 30 went to lesser known winners, Ruprekha of Fame Gurgukul, and Aishwarya( a male) of Ek Main aur ek tu. Debojeet and Abhijeet looked terribly embarrassed cos they made strong comments on the singing of the challengers, and then they themselves sang a little besura. Aspi, u want fodder for ur blog, please do watch this programme.

Sidekick said...

anu g, leera - i saw both programs yesterday. after a rough work week, i went to the well for fave mindless entertainment :). UKU on sony was just tiresome --- the shekhar suman, JJ jhagda did nothing for me and i love to see JJ in ladaaku mode (which one might argue is his norm!)! JJ's overly charitable remarks on emon i figured were his way of making up for the II3 disgrace. I figure now that he has righted the scales, emon can expect to see the old JJ back! emon's hair style and rock star performance were awful. the kid seems to have frittered away the early promise. also we need a rule banning maiyya maiyya fm being sung - i'm just sick of it and sumitra was shrill and shrieky. the kids Anamika on SRGMP LC and Anwesha on VOI-CU were miles ahead.

JJWS on star plus was time pass and a must see for the VS die hard fans here. They're delightful as judges. anu g - i don't get the format either, but i think the idea is that the champs get to keep their "crowns" until a challenger knocks them off. doesn't make for quality singing if the bad ones (like the painter guy or the emotional guy who cried at disappointing his wife) get to peddle their wares week after week, but never get to actually challange the champs and hence be eligible for being voted off. aspi, i'll join anu g and recommend u watch this one.

Same here Pitu, good luck.

Anu G, sidekick I am just gearing up to watch JJWS but I haven't followed a lot of the competitors barring the few from idol, I haven't heard any of them sing.

Btw I also watched the dancing episode of UKU and it was the first time I saw Shweta Salve and her partner take the stage and they were fantastic! Sandhya Mridul and the NB competitors were definitely of lesser calibre. Poor Kash-Krush were called 'too fat for their dance form' by Saroj Khan!

Malz said...

the semifinals of UKU is on right now..and the final is on 20th apr.. i watched the dancers and the kids and adults singing..toshi,raja and amit paul r good and i cant figure out how sumitra gets such good comments..they could hv got someone like sumedha or poonam from srgmp instead of mauli n sumitra..
i was also thinking anamika of srgmp li'l champs n aishwarya n anwesha of voi chotte ustaad are much better singers than some of these girls in JJWS and UKU

Spruha said...

I watched UKU through the week and found it rather boring most of the time. It was great to see Shveta Salve back!! She is obviously still just as awesome as was on JDJ! Sandhya or anyone for NB don't even come close. Vibhore and Vasundhara were so good too. Raja was clearly not at his best, but I didn't think it was nearly as bad as JJ said he was. The JJ and Shekhar Suman fight did nothing for me either! Both of them were equally annoying. I think JJ was trying to make up for the Indian Idol fiasco with his comments to Emon. I'm so not into his 'new look'. Sumitra's 'Maiyya Maiyya' was really unpleasant and shreiky. Even Anamika and Anvesha were better. For once, I would've rather seen Mauli sing it instead of Sumitra.
JJWS was a real treat! It was so great to see Vishal-Shekhar back. Both of them are so awesome as judges and there is really no unnecessary bull**** with them and Farah!! Ruprekha and Prajakta were great this week!

Aspi said...

Yikes, I had a pretty busy week too and it probably came down to the fact that I hadn't watched TV in weeks because I enjoyed UKU. In all fairness, I FF'd everything except the singing, dancing and the comedy (because that interesting thing was happening). Hmmm...it might be worth a post.

anu g, sidekick, thanks for the reco - someone had mentioned it here but I can never track these. I will be sure to check it out next week!

In the meantime, I've been enjoying Rajnikanth after scoring my first Tamil movie with subtitles. I watched Chandramukhi and whats with this "adhe adhe adhe" thing that Rajni does in the beginning of the song (its even in a fight). Since the movie is so self-referential of Rajni - the superstar, I thought it might mean something.

Aspi said...

And another thing about UKU, for some reason, I'm digging Saroj Khan. What's this about a woman who can whistle?

leera said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
leera said...

Yay, Aspi. Glad you like UKU, I was feeling pretty shameful in my lone love for pompousness abounds - Judge Javed vs Shekhar Suman, which to me is the USP of the show.

Saroj Khan did the 'seeti' thing on NB2 as well. In fact it was considered the highest 'honor' on the show. I am quite liking her on UKU, her sometimes dour, sometimes fierce presence adds an extra 'squirming' factor to all present.

Sajid Khan has cleaned up his act and kept the PJ's to a minimum. Much gratitude!

Btw did anyone catch Saif on Yeh hai Jalwa this weekend?
He showed up with Sajid Khan in a blindingly pink T shirt which was echoed in the set decor and costumes.
One wonders if stars purposefully tacky themselves up to appear on reality shows as a sign of solidarity to the general mood of the proceedings.

anu g said...

It seems like all of us find Sumitra Iyer shrieky. Then I wonder how all the judges find her so good.(Of course Vishal Shekar and Farah praised her on JJS, but gave her poor marks). Is it something to do with their being in awe of an IT engineer having given up her career for music? She seems to have got worse recently (as have so many others) due to lack of regular riyaz. I watched the semifinals of UKU , and thought she was the weakest among the singers in the classical round.Even Mauli sang the classical song quite well, much to my surprise.
And Aspi, all the arguments on Jay-Bindi;s bulldance definitely deserves a post. It was hilarious when Javed said that if Bindi wanted to show that she was a bull, instead of moving her cape, she should have put her two fingers on her head and charged. Haha!

Bella said...

was watching zee news the other day (i think it was zee news) and saw the story abt the Krazzy 4 tune being lifted.
they showed the video of the orignial tune and *shocK horror* guess who was starring in that advert?
none other that Hrithik (must say, that man has some sexy moves)...

perhaps that was the uncle's motivation???

anu g said...

Bella, apparently the Roshans took a No-Objection-Certificate from Sony Ericson for using the tune.(Hrithik was the model for the adv). But Rakesh claimed that it was his tune, thats where the whole confusion began. The composer Sampat says its his tune, so he should have been given credit.

Pitu said...

Thanks Sidekick and Leera..sweet of you :-)

What is this UKU? Singing show?

The culprit to me seems to be Sony Ericsson. Maha chalu they are. If they don't own the tune, how can they give a NOC and expect it to mean anything? They shd have mentioned Ram Sampath as owning the tune. Well whatever happened, the Roshan naam did get tarnished and it's a hard one to tarnish. Rajesh ain't perfect but he is no Bappi or Anu Malik or some other serial 'lifter' so I guess it's a lesson learned for all parties involved..

I second Anu G. on the post regarding JJ's sudden expertise in bulldancing!

Sumitra's voice is unbearably shrill and a little nasal (Himanshu take note for future movies) but I like her, she seems dignified and very invested in her performances.
Toshi and Raja bhai or bitter rivals. And must Raja wave to every performance with that smile plastered on his face? its getting a little creepy for me.
Both Indian idol guys sucked big time for me, especially Emon (wtf his hair seems to have sucked the sur right out of him)
The dances were pretty mediocre across the board. Though it was good to see Krushna doing what he does best (govinda jonar) but man that Kashmira has low self esteem. Any scraps of reality show praise seem to transport her into a blubbering mess of gratitude.

Aspi said...

Sigh, I wish I could have done a post today - but time constraints :(

anu g and leera, I'm with you. I think the whole bull fighting argument was hysterical! And boy that JJ - if a man disagrees with him, he argues pretty well. But if woman disagrees with him, its on to a personal attack. What a pseudo-feminist.

I'm glad Saroj kicked his ass.

Aspi, the hype over IPL is assuming great proportions in the Indian media. But in the midst of all this, hardly anyone is talking about the ICL. I didnt want to bring up the topic for fear of being branded one of those crazy cricket fanatics, but sigh, i guess I have actually become one.So here goes....
We went to watch the 20-20 ICL finals between Hyderabad Heroes and the Lahore Badshahs. The ticktes were priced at just 100 bucks, so the crowd was crazy there.Pakistan elicits a lot of support from the local hyderabadi population, so the Pakistani flags were seen in larger numbers. But WHAT A MATCH! It was simply superb. It was a big-scoring match, and went thru so many twists and turns, and finally went into a bowl-out chak-de style. And Hyderabad won!!What was more special was that the local Hyderabad youngsters performed really well. Kapil Dev and Subhash Goel were so pleased with the overcrowded stadium that they decided to hold another tournament ICL india vs pakistan vs world. The Indian rookies were considered the weakest. But they played to well, and finally won the tournament last evening.Watched it on tv this time, but the stadium was again filled.
So i guess 20-20 is here to stay. The timing is right. The kids (and parents) need a break after the exams. And with all the star power being promised, I think this season atleast will be a hit. I am not sure how many people will keep buying tickets for the IPL though whose ticktes r prized much higher.

Aspi said...

anu g, thanks for the report. Sounds like a lot of fun. Wish I could have been there. How long did the whole thing last for you from doorstep to back again? Just curious.

anu g said...

Well,Aspi, we left home at 6:15pm , and returned by about 11 pm. (It helps that the stadium is close by.This is the only proper stadium which has been given to the ICL. Thats becos a world-class stadium has come up in the outskirts of the city, and now all international matches r played there. Poor ICL guys had to manage with very ordinary stadiums in Gurgaon and Panchkula). The matches were generally from 7 till about 10 pm. Since it was a bowl-out, it took longer. But it was shorter and cheaper than what we would have spent watching say Jodha-Akbar at a multiplex.

Good question: some of it maps and some of it doesn't. The bit about them refining their sound, hiring rock and pop musicians to construct Bollywood songs, using Sukhwinder's mojo with compositions etc are obvious enough to pick up.

But there is a process he describes that is very precious to read. Because come their next album I can understand things a little better.

In all this just tells you how hazardous it is to review Bollywood music without watching the movie. I used to not watch those crazy previews before reviewing songs. I might change that. And it might even be an idea to do a repost on the music after watching the movie.

Cinderalla, I think Cyrus is very funny too! Too often his jokes are a bit flat, but despite that something about his timing, delivery and general demeanor makes them work :)

Also, about Khuda ke liye --- meant to do an update esp. for u, aspi and the drift memsaab. i saw it on DVD with some friends who were visiting us this past weekend. It was a MAJOR letdown, so much so that I wonder if the critics who raved about it and I saw the same movie! It is a film with its heart in the right place, with a message of tolerance and a need to understand different cultural paradigms. The execution was altogether another matter. It was presented like a weepie, overwrought Lifetime movie.

The acting was subpar - except for the actor who plays the older brother wrongfully caught in a post 9/11 Abu Ghraib style interrogation. The darpok that I am, I escaped those scenes on the pretext of making pakodas for everyone --- we already had popcorn! anyway, the film dragged interminably, Naseeruddin Shah was criminally underused and the acting was terrible. With a story as powerful as this one, less is more in terms of the setup and staging. This film just came off to me like an amateurish college production. The girl who plays the lead character of Mary is stunning to look at. The music was catchy and I'm thinking of sourcing it. In sum i don't think you missed much --- but that may just be me!

Wow Joules, looks like YRF is gonna have yet another faltoo year! Their next release is gonna be the Kunal Kohli movie that seems like a Mary Poppins ripoff.

Wow, Aditya chopra is losing it. I hope he is not going to go the way of the Barjatyas in the 90s... couple of super duper turning point hits and then.. duds..

Aditya Chopra has made many critical duds which went on to become box office darlings. So we shall have to see if we have another Race on our hands.
