The reality tv show's increase in male cleavage display in the last year was just an omnious precursor to this -

Another business idea of mine (that won't go anywhere). Anyone remember that Sienfeld "Manzier" episode where Kramer and Mr. Constanza design a special bra for men and market it as the "Bro"?

I think there is a burgeoning market for that in India. Think about all those middle-aged men who will want to imitate the SRKs and Ritwicks (or Himeshs in Gujarat) and can't afford surgery or gym memberships.

girlie girl said...

lol!! The Bro!! that's hysterical! That's not a bad idea...i'm glad i cant open that article at work and it's blocked by firewall!! i dont think i'm quite ready for something like that!! :-/

leera said...

Sorry drifters for the gag-wothy content of that article.
Aspi, one of my favorite episodes and I love Kramer (racist or not)and of course Jerry Stiller is a hoot and a half. 'The bro' sure has potential, better that than the marital disputes over men getting boob jobs!

Unfair: Karisma replaces Bips in an ad.

m said...

Bipasha and her PR/media should stop using her sad tale of being discriminated because she is "dusky" bullshit.. Bipasha herself uses makeup to look "fairer" and no one says she aint hot because she is darker than some others.. she looks horrid without 10 layers of makeup because she has squinty eyes and her features aint that great, her skin color has nothing to do with it..

in fact indian media are always hell bent on calling her sexy etc even tho her excessive weight training has made her look like one of the female wrestlers/body builders..

She was like in UK i got racially abused, ppl were yelling at the GOAL team while we were shooting.. yeah just because now Shilpa has a career because of her being a soc alled victim of racial abuse, it has now become fashionable to shout at rooftops

Aspi said...

As a die-hard Bips fan, I'd like to forget about Goal and that infamous dialog "Tum bahut sexy ho".

Shudder, chuckle.

Joules said...

Agree with you m on Bips. As much as I like her, she does have a way of crying wolf everytime something does'nt go her way. I also recall the multiple stories of her getting molested/assaulted everywhere (including the one here in the US for some independence day parade).

Thank God, someone comes clean about the dating scene. I think I'm going to trust Ranbir a bit more when he says stuff about his love life - not that its any of my business.

However, I noticed at the Filmfare awards that exes can have deep rooted impact on everything. Thus, wierd seating arrangements and absences. How does this industry survive!

Anonymous said...

meow, Manish Malhotra can be really catty.

On the Kareena article, though the writer is fawning over Kareena for spending time with bf's kids the way I read it is - 'Dad leaves early from son's b'day party to spend time with new girlfriend'.

The kid's going to be writing to MindRush soon.

I think Ranbir came clean and announced it to the world cos he was so insecure that D was beau-hopping. He'd better be careful.Isnt that what Vivek Oberoi did to Ash, who promptly dumped him.
My mil (oh, she would have loved the drift if she was computer-savvy) says that Kareena must be like her mom who wants to make the most of every opportunity. She is convinced that the mom and daughter decided that the best way to gain instant fame was to hitch on to a Khan(so I guess its the Khan name which has the power).SRK is happily married, Salman is big-brother-like, so Saif was the best bet. After all on a Koffee with Karan show years ago, Saif complimented Kareena with having the best hmm......backside:).

sidekick said...

gotto love bollywood's cut and thrust. manish malhotra... wow! tell us how you really feel abt vidya balan! i relished every bit of venom unil he took potshots at vidya's healthy looking figure! what??? now kareena's anorexic look is the new gold standard in bollwood? puhleeze!

girlie girl, ranbir maybe only one film old but as an establishment baccha... a veteran fm the first family of BW (or the second depending on whether you're bacchan or kapoor inclined!). he probably came clean coz unless you're adi chopra or rani, u want to be able to be out and about with yr one true love (of the month, in deepika's case!). truly she can probably consult along with Mind Rush!

finally, ranbir is in Mani Rathnam's film of 2009? My respect for MR and the dow jones index have much in common! i didn't see saawariya but the promos had ranbir adopting fine SRK-Ritwik excesses, which is typically so not MR.

leera, a thousand thanks for the himanshu interview :) as always i don't know whether to be impressed or horrified that he pulls the Jekyll and Hyde with such ease. self-effacing, dhokla boy morphs into megalamaniac manipulative judge in a blink of an eye. btw, i'm not giving him any credit for honesty --- it's blatant manipulation. i don't think he beleives in the dhokla boy stuff but he works the image.

also scary/smiley old guy (brilliant!) is a nasty piece of work ... the most combative and aggressive interviewer i've seen. he provokes each of his guests into anger and then saying more than they shd. himanshu with his bechaara dhokla boy persona handled him like a pro --- got to give himanshu credit for that. btw, i thought his karzzzzzzzz composition sucked --- or am i prejudging on too small of a sample.

Aspi said...

"Awaaz hee pehchaan!",

sidekick said...

those sonam pix were interesting, until i looked below and read the comments posted on that site and some made my stomach churn......

first off i wonder why sonam can't be a "seedhi sadhi bharatiya naari" (to quote someone there) and also party like any 20 something year old. When Kiran Desai poked gentle fun in the The Inheritance of Loss
at the young Indian women who preened about straddling cultures and being equally at home with bharatanatyam and salsa (my examples I think, can't remember hers!), I laughed. But at some level it is true, we're from a land of contradictions and women do straddle the traditional and the modern all the time. Case in point: Ash Bachchan rushes home from the Pink Panther shoot for a very traditional karva chauth (thereby making national headlines!), and is also spotted at a Beyonce concert.

Second, even if Sonam did engage in bacchanalian orgies, I want to ask like Nicholas Kristof did (in an entirely differently context, but one that points to harsh judgments nevertheless) --- So what if she did?

Aspi said...

Shame on Sonam - for hanging out with a weird and skanky looking dude with underarm perspiration spots. On the other hand, he kind of looks like me doesn't he?

sidekick, I'm with you on this. I find Gandhian principles hard to live up to. Everyone is a mass of contradictions and to live with those with understanding and comfort is one of the tricks you need to pull in life.

skd,

it's not unmarried women living 'abroad'...it's pretty much the same in India too.....most of my frnds are in the so called 'marriageable' age and if they are being career oriented and choosy abt the guy they want to get married too..omg all hell keeps breaking loose so often....the guy wants the girl to leave her job once they get married..blah!
and i have seen some families around here where the higher the girl's education is the higher is the demand for dowry!!! How cheap!!!

m said...

well i have no problems with sonam partying, hell my/and my cousins facebook pictures are twice as raunchy . My problem was that over the top shy, coy and innocent act she did while promoting her movie. Just be yourself. Also, her fans and indian media portray her as some innocent little daddy's girl who would be too scared to leave her house without a chaperone.

m said...

speaking of arranged marriages my grandmom and mom started getting "rishtas" even when i was like 17. My mom would be like are you kidding.

Like for example, last year we were over at one of our family friend's house for dinner, and they had some desi people there. They constantly talked about their son who was studying engineering and the mom stared at me as if she had never seen a girl her whole life. They wanted to send "rishta" and i was like i would rather kill myself. Ewww it was a set up. I mean who do they think they are, checking me out, how about them bringing their loser son so i could rate that f**ker

and what about those annoying auntyjis at gurdwaras UGH.

Also, my aunts were talking about how ladies with single unmarried sons of marriagable age always talk about me with them. My cousins were like "ewwwww the guys are so fugly how could they even think about it".. EWWWW seriously these moms need to get some glasses and need to be told that their son ain't a "catch".. they better take them back to Chandigarh and find a belle there.. I don't want their chops..

Joules said...

m, that is funny. Yeah, Indian mom's start early. Specially where I come from (UP) if you are not married by the time you are 24 you probably are not worth it. Same goes for the guys. Gotta be married by 27 or there is something seriously wrong.

Once at the grocery store this Indian mom struck a conversation with me while waiting for the butcher, asking me all kinds of questions. I answered politely thinking she is fresh of the boat and wants to talk to someone who is from back home even though some questions were beginning to be intrusive. She then introduced me to her son and I noticed the shyness (and embarassment) with which he said hello. I politely started dropping hints about having a husband in the conversation and that made her loose all interest in me.

Aspi said...

Well, at least no one can accuse Indian parents of not being romantic. They're just being romantic with the wrong relationship.

since when was JA a hit? well 2 weeks after it was released, it is all time blockbuster overseas and in India despite all the banning and some of those rajput people protesting, it made a LOT of money.. but the cast and crew aren't the bragging type to make outlandish comments about money so maybe it wasn't headline news *hmm*

anyhoo i don't wish to talk about ash and her proving time and time again that she is a fabulous actor.. some actresses overact in majority of their movies but when they do one decent role then people always rave about them like they are India's answer to Meryl Streep for years and years.. but its the opposite for Ash.. so while ppl bitch and moan about her so called "lack of acting skills", she is still the highest paid and has all these acclaimed directors offering her roles.. so imma not say anything

anu g, Aish link: brilliant!

Khusboo link: let's all just hope megan doesn't show up here to say I told you so :)

Aspi said...

Yikes, megan will live to be a 100 years old as they say.

Hey, I have Aish pretty high on my Power List. And I know, I'm beginning to sound like a commercial for this one pathetic post I've been working on. But next week I promise (to all two of you waiting with baited breath).

A fairy,an *ahem* angry young man, four children???? i get a strange feeling it's a remake of some old movie again!!! i soo hope i'm not right!

the only movie i'l look forward to is 'Roadside romeo'..HEHE:)

about JA,ummm,no comments:|

It's soo true about south Indian actors wanting girls half their age!it is soo irritating...they've been acting ever since i was born!
and they stil act like they are college going and finding a new love and BLAH!
can't they do roles that atleast suit their age??

they have all roles written for them..try all new innovative techniques to look 'young and happening' but fail miserably!!

the dad acts as macho-man+loving-hero and son also enters the same arena -in pretty similar roles!!!!!!!

and plus..i heard Nagrjuna's son dates his dad's heroine *CENSORED*

p.s:Nagarjuna is south Indian actor btw!

anu g said...

Cindrella, Nagajuna has acted in some Hindi movies too.Narsimha I think? And Criminal which had that famous song 'Tum Mile Dil Khile' composed by Kreem.I guess he is also well-known for the women in his life, Amala, his wife and Tabu, a good friend and neighbour!

I am becoming quite addicted to these news channel interview shows and their 'journalistic zeal' at approaching every interview with a hard talk mindset.

Quite a contrast though between the gentle, sardonic host on NDTV and the scary/smiley guy on Aaj tak.

And talking about looking ghey Hrithik is quite up there.

leera, i'm also enjoying all the celeb interviews on the news channels. turns out that the rajshri website has a bunch of the NDTV ones. a search for "Bombay Talkies" (with Srinivasan Jain who interviewed saif in the latest of the series) and "Walk the Talk" (with Shekhar Gupta) brings up some of the older interviews.

Also last week, Kajol was on Walk the Talk....

leera said...

Thanks a ton joules, i never cease to be endeared by kajol, the natural unaffectedness shines through bad makeup, no makeup, horrendous clothes etc.

Btw I was totally psyched to see that the Rajshri website had episodes of that old high school show Hip Hip hurray.

We were crazy about that show in middle school and it was nostalgic to see it again, it has quite an established alum from ranvir shorey to shweta salve, and even bhumika chawla in a miniscule role as the nerd!

Joules said...

leera, I think you meant to thank sidekick.

I know what you mean about Kajol. You forget why you like her until you see her again. She has this refreshingly endearing quality to her.

I love this pic of Katrina from the race premiere and really like how she has worn her saree pallu

http://www.indiafm.com/stills/partiesnevents/Premiere_of_Race/still38056.html

sidekick said...

I think few typify screen presence as much as kajol. she isn't conventionally pretty but it's hard to take your eyes off her on screen. i don't think she cares, but kajol could use a better media strategy ---- she told shekhar gupta to pretty much buzz off at some awards nite? besides being daft in terms dissing a senior journo, it just seems plain rude.

call me a snob, but after all those articles about how kajol is a great reader and never without a book, all of them turn out to be Mills & Boon? i reckon everyone reads trashy stuff, but if that's all you read.......

celebs have no obligation to be socially or politically active, but if you do speak for a cause, then you need to prepare for it and be responsible about what you say. When kajol creates a flap like this, i can't but help admire even more the Hollywood brigade of Brangelina, Clooney, Natalie Portman and their ilk

leera said...

oops sorry sidekick :)

That AIDS goof up, tsk tsk from endearing to insurmountably foot in the mouth in a matter of nano-seconds!

And I agree on the mills and boons thing. I abhor them.

Aspi said...

That Kajol thing is funny - but just goes to show you how much you assume about a celebrity based on the characters they play.

leera said...

On those RACE premiere photos, man that Aaamir Khan looks good bald.

I never thought he was sexy per se, but I take it back. I am verrry pleased with the buzzed Aamir.

On the other hand, barring a few there's a lot of kooky (not in a good way) fashion on that red carpet.

leera said...

Ok people the BIG CHEESE is here.

"Yeh hai Jalwa" the new reality show shows oodles of promise.

Combining a smattering of reality show alums - Prachi,Rakhi, Ronit-Rohit, Varun Badola etc a few hotshot Tv stars and Rozza(saif's ex), no judges, teams like Chillar Parrty, Bindaas bosses, Firangi fatake, Guru Kool(elderly), rangeele dilwale (Rozza's team of blue collar workers)and a couple of saucy OB's (Original Bahus) as hosts; yeh hai jalwa is one to watch out for in terms of intended/unintended hilarity.

Joules said...

So I am wathching an old Amitabh movie (Ram Balram) on TV and started thinking, how many drifters here are old enough to be Amitabh Bachchan fans.

Aspi, I would love to see a write up on what your favourite Amitabh Bachchan movies are. As much as I hate Amitabh's public persona (the whole bahurani thing is turning me off) he is my all time favourite actor. Its very hard to pick his top movies, but here is my list (and I am trying not to pick his more popular movies like Sholay, Muqaddar.., Kala Pathar, Satta Pe Satta etc..)

1) Saudagar - this movie straddles so well between commercial and art - Amitabh plays a gurd trader.
2) Milli - Although Jaya's character stole the show as she was a cancer patient this was truly Amitabh's incarnation as an angry young man.
3) Trishul - Perfect in casting and perfect in the roles played by the supporting cast.
4) Bemisaal - Does anyone remember Sakhi?
5) Virudh - One of those movies that did'nt get as much publicity but Amitabh as a father stuggling to clear his son's name really stood out with his poignant acting.

leera said...

Aspi, Yeh hai Jalwa is on 9X on Sunday primetime (not sure about the time) They have decent uploads on apnicommunity.

Joules, good idea. I grew up in the 90's but remember watching plenty of amitabh movies on several afternoons on good old zee cinema.

I concur on Milli, also Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Kaala Patthar, and more recently Aankhen and cheeni Kum.

anu g said...

Joules, dont expect many people to be replying on the 'age' issue here:)
How about Deewar and Namak Halal?

anu g said...

Its interesting that the lady who interviewed Bansali, and coerced(?) him to go anti-SRK/Saif is the wife of another aggrieved Vidhu vinod chopra!

Joules said...

SLB and Vidhu have a habit of crying everytime someone makes a joke about them. Grow up guys and act your age.

Amir Khan and SRK handle this so well. You can ignore it or respond back with humor.

Aspi said...

Joules, good question. As far as I am concerned the greatest Amitabh movies are (1) the old Deewar and (2) Amar Akbar Anthony. Whenever I think of Amitabh, those come to mind.

Is there a greater heartbreak scene ever filmed in Bollywood to rival Amitabh getting seperated from his lucky billa in Deewar? I think not!

anu g said...

Celina says it was just a rumour. The lady who was really bhang-ed and displayed it on national tv was Shabana Azmi. The news channels were showing clippings of Shabana at SRK's Holi-party.She was tipsy and kept giggling and swaying. The channels simply loved it.
