Bollywood Actresses: Who's Google Hot and Who's Google Not?

Google Trends is an application that shows you how popular a certain topic has been over the Internet for the past few years. There is much more to it than that and you can read more about it, but I'd strongly advise you not to: we all have dense, complicated, stressful lives and the Drift is not the place to indulge in more of the same.

Why is this dorky subject something worth discussing? Because lately I've been having some fun with it.

Prompted by an excellent post by Louis Gray, I decided to check the general Google hotness of Bollywood actresses. Before we begin, a quick note: I've linked to the actual trend page for each actress. Not only can you see the popularity graph of an actress, but you'll be able to see specific stories related to spikes in their popularity. And you'll also be able to see which location the searches for a particular actress are coming from.

Tremendously scientific conclusions can be made such as: Bhopal is mad for Aishwarya or the most curiosity inducing event in Bipasha's life was tied to a certain nibbling soccer star.

In any case, looking at trends (I"ll call it Hotness Index just so I can sound like my Bollywood writing idol Shobha De) established actresses have a flat curve with some spikes related to specific events.

Lets take Ms. Rai's for example. Fairly flat graph - which indicates constant Hotness. Those two spikes in 2007? Her marriage to Abhishek.

Bipasha has the same flat curve - her biggest spike being the aforementioned incident.

Two more who suffer the same fate: Rani (her last big spike - the release of Laaga Chunari Mein Daag)

and surprisingly, Sushmita (her peak - the announcement of The Expat with Richard Gere, which Sushmita subsequently dropped out of)

More big names worth looking at: Madhuri, Kareena, Preity.

But enough with the big names. Who do you think has been getting increasing love from the masses? Starting with Rang De Basanti, Soha Ali Khan has been generating heat from Pakistan and Bangladesh besides India. Her gun harboring habit and brother Saif's tabloid fodder relationship with Kareena have helped.

Deepika Padukone, predictably saw a jump in her Hotness Index post-Om Shanti Om. But she hasn't had releases since then and those foolish dating controversies have done little to generate web love.

The biggest gainer here - and Bollywood's new queen of the Internet - is Katrina Kaif whose Hotness Index skyrocketed after Partner up until her recent crowning as The Sexiest Woman Alive by FHM.

Vidya Balan post-Guru has been gaining as well.

A recent climber who needs to be watched further - Genelia D'Souza whose new movie is generating some sharp heat for her.

So who's falling? Several actresses in relative terms. Away from the public eye for a while following her marriage and the birth of her daughter Nysa, Kajol's graph has been showing a new downturn.

Amisha Patel - starved of a mainstream hit - is another one losing online mind share.

The same scenario dogs Mallika Sherawat as well whose primary asset, her image, is fast becoming stale.

And since the web caters to an audience with a wide variety of tastes, the Hotness Index of certain actresses is flop-proof. Celina Jaitley has a curve reminiscent of an established actress although she hasn't established a firm place as an artiste in the industry.

Malaika Arora is another one of those. And while I'm at it: Malaika, you should visit Surat and Karachi one of these days. And of course, Bhopal.

Is Google charting the heat in Bollywood accurately? Its a circular question if you ask me. But its largely indicative of how you can make a career in Bollywood on the basis of buzz rather than hits. Finally, will we do one for the men soon? Stay tuned!

And guess what/whom I searched trends for: Rakhi Sawant

http://www.google.com/trends?q=rakhi+sawant&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

Bery bery popular in Chandigarh followed by Bhopal.

Aspi, you should not have missed Rakhi! ;)

was that deliberate? 'dogs' and 'Mallika Sherawat' in the same sentence?

Katrina was supposedly voted hottest by the indian men in their annual INDIAN edition FHM poll.. not any other international edition of the mag unlike what the desi media/her PR wants us to believe..

anyhoo, Aish was the most searched celebrity in Yahoo movies last week or so.. and she is the only desi actor i see in top ten over there..

Aspi said...

Nikhil, quite right - there were too many to include so I thought I'd split them up. If Rakhi is worth looking at, we'll do a starlet edition soon.

~mm~ thanks for pointing out that I could be an unwitting genuis :)

Aspi said...

m, your comment leads me to clarify a few things.

Google tracks searches. There will be a number of fans who directly hit a site that is say Aish related without doing a search. These don't get counted. It's a weakness with Google Trends that is not easily overcome because Google cannot see the traffic that bypasses its sites.

Also, I think at some point I will play around with actresses across Hollywood and Bollywood to see what kind of numbers are getting generated. It will be a bit unfair because the Internet population skews in favor of China/US then India, but it might be interesting.

Kanan said...

Great news, Aspi. I didn't know they had this outside of the Google reader too. They also have the trends on there. Really cool feature.

Btw, Kareena and Preity links give me this: Bad Request: Your client has issued a malformed or illegal request.
hehehe :D

THANKS!

Aspi said...

Thanks Kanan! I believe I've fixed all those links now.

You are such an MVP, let me know if anything is wrong with my posts like that. Sometimes I get too lazy to test all the links. Or sometimes - as was the case here in a couple of places - its that darn Draft Blogger I am testing.

Aspi,

here's a link to "20 roles in one film" Rajnikant (There's no such thing as too much Rajnikanth in one movie, obviously)
http://www.bombaybitch.com/site/twenty_rajinikanths_at_a_theatre_near_you/

Mind it!

Teddy said...

hey, that link did not paste properly..it should be
http://www.bombaybitch.com/site/twenty_rajinikanths_at_a_theatre_near_you/

Aspi said...

Teddy, thanks! Maybe this is going to be the next battlefield in Kollywood - how many roles can I cram into one film.

World records will be announced by stars to upstage each other. Do I hear 25 in one film?

girlie girl said...

Interesting post Aspi. I tired some links but like Kanan said, it's been giving me that message. I'll try a little bit later i guess. It's funny how most of the searches that make these actresses popular are the incidents in life they try to underplay...i.e. Bips "kiss" with the (hot) soccer player! Little does she know (maybe she does know) that it's that incident that rose people's curiosity and googled her! hmm...

hi aspi,

i'm back (i'm the one who called vishal and shekhar gay in 2007) Still stand by my comments aswell.

Who else thinks vidya bhalan has a badonkadonk?

Aspi said...

gg, sorry about the links. I went back and tested every one of them and they all seem to work fine for me. Maybe refresh your page?

Anon - we'll call you Trace Adkins from now on.

So finally saw Tashan (still not done watching the whole movie). My expectations were low but this movie was even bad for my low expectations. All the actors are so ridiculous. Felt like giving Adi Chopra a tight (tv style) slap.

Kareena for all the size zero talk looked like an anorexic b***h with a big head.

Have to give a shot out to the choreographers. The songs have been awesomely picturized and Aki Narula's outfits in two songs "Dil Haara and "Falak Tak" are awesome.

joules said...

And Aspi, I can be your filter to UP anytime you want me to be. My hubby's not from UP either so I can imagine your plight.

joules said...

That was a "shout out" not a shot out. (Although I did feel like shooting a few people starting with Anil Kapoor).

Pitu said...

lol now i hafta see it.

Pitu said...

Wow, Deepika has a prominent Adam's Apple o.O

Aspi said...

I saw Tashan too and was planning to write something. But I thought it was a good idea gone wrong. The songs were great but I thought they sucked a lot of energy out of the story.

Joules said...

Hey Pitu, I just read your email in my gmail account and responded. I feel bad about the delay.

m said...

vidya doesn't have a bedonkadonk, she is big all over, it is quite proportional to the rest of her body

now only 2 actresses come to mind who got J Lo behind and one actually doesn't have it, she uses pads to give that look.. Lets see if anyone can guess who she is

Aspi said...

Kareena?

Who knew one could get so much info about google? Great research tool! Thanks for educating us, Aspi.

So, really, if you are a celeb, any type of publicity is good for one's TRP.

One thing to be cautious about... ( drawing from wasted scientific training)...
Drifters, look very carefully at the Y axis along with the shape of the graph. Ash is many times more hits at her troughs than some other ladies have at their peaks.

Aspi said...

Mind Rush, good point.

In fact just today I was running a comparison between the two most curiosity-inducing actresses in Hollywood and Bollywood. And here is what I got.

Hollywood chick over Bollywood chick by a mile (although the comparison is a bit unfair).

anu g said...

I think Amisha Patel's graph will change soon cos she seems to be in display-mode. Saw Thoda Pyaar..it was supposed to be a childrens movie, but god, there is this one song where the camera goes close-up on all her curves....

girlie girl said...

Enlighten us Meg!! I'm awfully curious as to who uses pads for their back-side...

What?!!

Anu Malik said...

Harman, didn't I tell you in the studio? What did I say? Whatever Anu Malik says, is true.

girlie girl said...

WOAH!! Priyanka...I guess i'm not surprised...who's the one with a real bedonkadonk in B-wood??!

Pitu said...

gg: That would be Asha Parekh. "Main tumhare paas bahut badi aas (ass) leke aayi hoon"

Aspi said...

I second the nomination of Asha Parekh - who for some inexplicable reason I hate with a passion.

Nothing personal - I'm sure the love millions lavished on her was justified. But there was something about that crow's nest hairstyle and sweeping kohl that made me wince every time.

Pitu said...

Ugh I could never stand her either, Aspi. She was just ugh. As was Nanda. These 2 women I could never tolerate. Also, Vyjyantimala's superb dancing couldn't make amends for her drag queen makeup! My hubby's aunt is a huge Vyj fan and I'm always gagging when she brings out the Amrapali and Sangam videos :-X

Aspi said...

I think the way these women acted on screen just put me off. Compared to someone like Waheeda or Madhubala who were more fun to watch.

Another one (and you can kill me for saying that) that used to give me the heebie jeebies: Meena Kumari. Every time I saw her on screen I just felt like giving her a comb and saying "Rebraid, please!"

j said...

oooooh, I am there with Meena Kumari. She almost came across as a transvestite (no offense meant to trannies).

My fav's were Waheeda, Madhubala and Saira. Never liked how Nargis looked but loved her movies.

One of my favourite Asha movies is Teesri Manzil not because of Asha but Shammi and the music. LOVE the songs of that movie. And the suspense of the movie was awesome.

I became a huge fan of Helen after watching than movie.

Pitu said...

Oh I totally agree- in fact it's so funny I was telling hubs this weekend that nobody in Bollywood has Madhu's and Waheeda's ada and nazakat. Also Nutan was very cool. They were so spirited! Not a dull moment. Asha/Nanda/Vyj/Babita were all so 'nautanki' types. And that horrid pink makeup they wore in a bid to look fair merely made them look clownish. Gimme a sun-kissed Waheeda anyday (altho I hated her makeup in that 'Chaudhvi ka chaand' song. Meena Kumari I didn't hate but her choice of films I ensured I didn't watch any. The only film of hers which I genuinely like is Sharda. (a very cool film starring Raj Kapoor where she marries his dad despite being his lover and so now she is his 'stepmother'. some great acting in that one!!)Everything else was sponsored by glycerine manufacturers. Athough I must say she looked luminously beautiful in Saheb Bibi aur ghulam and I felt so terrible for Bhootnath (Guru Dutt).

You have inspired me to do a Most Beautiful Bolly devis post!

j said...

Pitu please do. I hope my favourite Saira figures in the list.

The problem with Chaudhvi ka Chand song was it was colored later so the colors looked artificial. I dont think it was the makeup per say.

Kind of similar to "Pyaar Kiya to darna kya"

Aspi said...

Devi, proceed karo.

I thought Madhubala rocked in Babuji dheere chalna.

Pitu said...

J, how can I forget Saira? Gosh, she looked like a little porcelain doll in 'Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par' (Junglee). That is a good point you make about the colorization vs makeup. I didn't consider that.

Uff, Aspi, like I told hubs- Madhubala is the only woman I wouldn't mind turning lesbian for. hehe. Jokes apart, I LURVE her in 'Accha ji main hari chalo maan jao na'from Kalapani. How can you stay mad at someone who pouts and cajoles so sweetly? :-)

j said...

With the risk of me sounding like a parrot, loved Saira in Purab aur Paschim. Also another actress I liked (and never got a chance to see too much of) was Suchitra Sen. (Still jealous of how Bengalis have always ruled bollywood).

girlie girl said...

OMG Madhubala rocked EVERYTHING she touched. I love her, I think she was one of the best things to happen to the Indian Film Industry. It's just really sad that she died so early. ooh, also, Pitu, Can i throw in Mumtaz's name in the list?! I think she was up there in the Beautiful people list...Not any more though, god she looks Horrific now.

ooh, another one on the ugly list...Sandhya. God she was the queen of all B-wood Tranny's (again, no offense!)...

j said...

My mom tells me how she and her friends would stand in front of the mirror and try to imitate Madhubala's crooked (that is the best way I can explain it) smile.

Aspi said...

I still get a kick out of watching Nirupa Roy as a heroine. Wah, that sharmili ghost of a smile and downward glance with fingers entwined! Enough to put me off romance for weeks.

Kanan said...

I think Asha Parekh is the best thing that happened to Hindi films ever since the Dil Deke Dekho days. I love her totally! In fact, some of my most favorite movies from the 60s are hers. What an awesome dancer and such an expressive face and those batting eyes are to die for. I don't mind the rest of the package that comes with it because the rest of her makes up for the flaws. The most bubbly heroine of yesteryears would be her I think. No one had that playfulness that she had that was portrayed on the silver screen (Ziddi, Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, Caravan, etc.). It's another story she was too level headed in real life and our Bollywood boys didn't have guts to ask her out, propose to her or make an affair with her so kind of sad for her.

The others I like include Sharmila Tagore (ooh do I love those blouses of hers with a knot in the back or what! and a foot-long pallu), Sadhana and Waheeda Rehman. Mala Sinha too totally rocked when it came to acting. That gal has had some of THE BEST songs on HFM, what a beauty! It's actors like her that prove that you don't have to have great height, model-like body or drop-dead-gorgeous-looks to be successful in films.

Saira Banu was good in some of the films but she eventually turned into Vidya Balan like situation (in Padosan). I liked her in Aayi Milan Ki Bela much better.

Meena Kumari has had maximum time on screen with an expressionless face so not a huge fan of hers, though I love her in some of her songs. Madhubala was gorgeous, no comparisons there. I think as an actor she could have done better though. Nutan was beautiful and extremely elegant yet simple and a fine actor, too bad majority of her movies portrayed her as a poor woman and the dress designers never gave her anything great to wear that matched her beauty. Mumtaz is a patakha and that's about it. Nargis was too tomboyish with that extra-long face of hers. And the likes of Vyjayantimala, Tanuja, Babita, Leena Chandavarkar, et al fall under the eh-category.

J, if you liked Teesri Manzil for Shammi and Helen, you should totally check out Pagla Kahin Ka. And if you're even more of a fan of her's you should check out this song.

PS. Aspi, thanks for the compliment. :)

Kanan said...

J, I meant this Helen song. Just realized I forgot to link the song in previous comment.

Aspi said...

Kanan, you make a convincing case for some Asha Parekh love.Certainly her choices in life were unconventional (I still remember seeing her husband happily traipse along behind her sometimes holding her purse).

Helen on the other hand is an acknowledged goddess of Indian cinema. When I was a kid I longed to have a birthday party where I could have Helen dance for all of us.

Kanan said...

Aspi, from what I know, Asha Parekh has remained unmarried all her life unless of course you have some inside info that I don't know of. ;) Please do share.

I agree with the Helen bit. She was one complete package. She had everything a Bollywood actor can ask for and still has I think. I wonder whether she got any Hollywood offers in those days. She is one such person who possibly could have. Wow! a birthday party with Helen eh... that'd be like best gift ever, but I'd like to watch some "mehbooba" kind of belly dancing unlike this song. :P

I think you should do a post on craziest Bollywood dance songs since we already have Mimoh's songs to begin with. Of course Akshay Kumar's sabun ad by m, and I can send you a couple more.

meena said...

Madhubala in 'Mohe panghat pe..' in Mughal-e-azam or 'ek ladki bheegi bhaagi si..' in chalti ka naam gaadi....sigh... enough said.

I am surprised no one mentioned the one person I am used to thinking of as the anti-Asha Parekh, Jaya Bhaduri...liberator of women from the Asha/Sadhana styling and the return to simple basic style.
..the one visual I always have of Asha is the ghastly half lehengas they wore then in the name of rural getup (yuck..)

Aspi said...

Kanan, great idea! I'll take those two suggestions and work on them. Anyone have any more - please let me know.

And you're right. I got Asha Parekh confused with Vyjanthimala.

Ek Ladki was a pretty definitive song for Madhubala - meena's right. Of all those actresses she was the most alluring.

Pitu, hurry up with that post already!

Pitu said...

Uff!!! So much pressure! I am doing it tonight hehe ;-)

Aspi, my contribution to the crazy songs is the title song of 'Tum Mere Ho' starring Aamir and Juhi. Visual-

Aamir and Juhi in psuedo rural getup, Aamir with a 'been' in his hand. Passionate embrace. Cut from the interlocked lips and arms to the floor where 2 SNAKES!!!!!!!!! are 'embracing'. For the uninitiated, Aamir and Juhi are icchaadhaari naag/naagin and they change forms mid-song.

To my knowledge, only one Hindi song glamorizes snake sex and this is it :-p Now you can all throw up your lunch :-D

Aspi said...

Pitu, sounds like you haven't encountered the force of nature known as "Nagin", made in 1976 still one of the great Indian movies of our times. Ah, but if I could get a print I might not miss SRGMP so much.

j said...

Yeah, and Jeetendra wearing a very short skirt romancing his Naagin.

Talking of Naag movies, Hollywood is finally interested. David Lynch's daughter is making a movie on icchadhari naagin with Maalika Sherawat as the main character.

What a concept that icchadhari snake is. Its the gift that keeps on giving.

Teddy said...

hmmmm

note to self, must include incchadhaari nag/nagin angle in Himesbhai soap. Maybe before or after the tantrik and punarjanam episode.

Anyhow, very entertaining reading on everyone's favourite yesteryear hero and heronini (one of our neighbours had trouble pronouncing heroine, she always said hero-nini)

I found Asha Parekh unbearable...especially her way of saying "daddy" which always came out as "Gaggy".

Another actress I detested was Meena Kumari. That's because I really don't care for the crying, silently suffering type women which she came to personify.

Hey, how about a post for the most ornery, mean women of bollywood...I mean the Lalita Pawars and the Shashikalas? The ones who played mean bhabhis and saas, or molls? The moll to beat all molls was Bindu.

Aspi said...

Teddy I was thinking about that very topic today. My favorite gun moll Komila Vark must never be forgotten!

Pitu said...

Gaggy!!! hahaaahaahaa!!

I have seen Nagina (Sridevi) but not Nagin. But did Nagin have snake sex? Cause that's really innovative.

BTW, part 1 of the Bolly Beauties post is up on my blog- check it out.

Teddy, pls do the Himes script soon.

girlie girl said...

Very Nice Pitu!! Cant' wait to see part 2 of the series!!

j said...

Great work, Pitu.

I disagree with Smita Patil being that high up on the list. Agree that she was a great actress but definitely not a looker for me.

girlie girl said...

Smita Patil had her moments I believe...she either looked really pretty or just like a beat up old raggedy ann doll...

j said...

My problem with Ms. Patil and Nandita Das to some extent is that they wear colors and makeup that makes them look like a kaamwali. On the other hand Deepti Naval or Shabana use to dress simple but looked classy. (This was before Shabana got her arched eyebrows).

Aspi said...

Unless Ms. Patil was in a Mithun disco song - then her look simply couldn't be described.
