Inside the music of Rock On!! with Ehsaan Noorani (A Drift Exclusive)

Shankar Ehsaan Loy's music for Rock On!! is a landmark effort. How so? Stripped of non-Bollywood style constructs, it embraces a spare four piece rock band sound and stays true to it from beginning to end. There are some bold choices on the album from the choice of lyricist (Javed Akhtar) to the choice of singers - none more so than giving lead vocals on no less than five tracks to Farhan Akhtar (writer-director: Dil Chahta Hai, Don) who makes his acting debut here.

Rock On!! is probably the best Hindi rock CD that indierock never gave us.

Ehsaan Noorani - who along with Shankar Mahadevan and Loy Mendosa makes up SEL and whose guitar riffs power much of the signature sound of Rock On!! - was nice enough to tell us about the making of the music exclusively here on the Drift.

Aspi: Hi Ehsaan, congratulations on a terrific CD - its a straight rock album but its different in tone and texture from regular Bollywood albums. Did you get specific directions on the songs from (director) Abhishek?

Ehsaan: Farhan and Abhishekh briefed us on the kind of songs that they were looking at for Rock On!! which was essentially rock. They played us the kind of music that they were listening to while penning the script. Naturally the music was going to be totally non Bollywood in terms of format and style.

Aspi: How long did the album take to put together?

Ehsaan: All the songs were composed in about 5 days! We composed like a rock band with the drums and bass set up and we all played live to the recorder . We cut this album like a band does which is essentially live...no programming.

Aspi: You picked interesting singers on the album. Is there such a thing as a good Hindi rock voice?

Ehsaan: Farhan was naturally the first choice since he is the actor in the film . It was a nice move on the part of the director to make Farhan sing as it gives the music and the film a sense of realness like Hollywood films have. Suraj (Jagan) is a great rock singer and was the first choice for the Zehreelay song . Caralisa (Monteiro) and Dominique (Cerejo) who sung the two mellow songs are fine singers with totally different voices and we chose them because they are completely apart from the typical film voices.

Aspi: Ehsaan, could you tell us something about each song on the CD?

Ehsaan:

Socha Hai
(This was) the 2nd song we composed essentially based around the guitar riff which opens the song!

Pichle Saat Dinon Mein
This was the first song we composed. We literally jammed on the guitar riff that I came up with and the song fell into place in about 20 mins! The words are very interesting about how one loses everything but can't afford to lose love. The guitar solo was the solo I played on the first draft of the recording and we decided to stick with it.

Rock On!!
This song came later as we thought it would be nice to have a title song! The song has a nice 80's vibe which we went for on purpose.

Ye Tumhari Meri Baatein
A beautiful traveling song which Dominique sang with such wonderful soul. She really is an awesome singer! I like the texture of the entire song which has a lovely ambient quality to it.

Zehreelay
The heavy metal song on the album which Suraj has rendered like a true rock star! Suraj also inputted on the composition of this song. Javed saab freaked us (out) by writing the words for this song. He totally related to it! The guitar solo on this song is totally unlike my style of playing and it came magically in one take I don't think I will be able to play it again.

Tum Ho Toh
The rock ballad on the song has a wonderful vibe and it is completely different from the other songs (an angle you will see in the film). It was challenging for Farhan to sing and he did a great job.

Sinbad the Sailor
Javed saab created a great hook by coming up with the Sindbad the Sailor words. There have been songs like Achilles Last Stand and Brave Ulysses in the past so this concept is really cool. It has a great jangle to it.

Pichle Saat Dinon Mein (Live)
Essentially a live version of the song to give people a feel of the film.

Phire Dekhiye
Caralisa's vocals took this song to a different level! I composed this song in English to get the right feel after which Javed saab wrote the words (in Hindi). Loy has played a million dollar piano solo in the 2nd interlude.

You did not tell us how you got hold of Ehsaan. Havent heard the album yet.

m, I loved Khuda Ke Liye music too.

Wow, awesome. This takes the drift to a whole new level.

Got to give this album a listen.

i come back after a few weeks of being gone, to finds all kinds of interesting happenings on the drift - none more so than this exclusive with ehsaan.

i'm intrigued by the idea of a BW rock album coming as it does in the face of the relentless and exhausting punjabification of BW music. For SEL this has to have been a welcome challenge and a chance for redemption. They came in for a lot of flak for Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic coming off as a stock, uninspired effort.

i only wish i didn't know farhan akhtar was responsible for the vocals.... its impossible not to let that piece of info creep into the evaluation of the music. anyway, got to check this out pronto.

i'll also join in the love for Khuda ke liye's music. In fact it was the only thing i really liked about the film!

nice one, aspi! looking fwd to more great suprises :)

Superb album!!! I hope this album will give inspiration to the indian rock scene

Aspi said...

You'll be surprised about how cool the BW music community is in terms of engaging with fans. So making contact with music folks is not a problem. More on that when I finally publish that BW Music Power list one of these days.

But I'm terribly excited to have Ehsaan tell us stuff about the album that you won't be able to read anywhere else! :)

Finally a quick apology regarding sticking my name everywhere in that post. Its pompous and ugly but I wanted to try a new form of copy protection - so bear with me please.

girlie girl said...

Wow Aspi! You are just climbing up that fame ladder, aren't you?! I've heard a couple of songs and they're quite nice. Have yet to hear the whole album...it'll happen one of these days, I promise!

Awesome Aspi ji.Aap to famous ho gaye.
I am looking forward to the music as I am tired of the mahiyas and kudis in every song.

svr said...

Wow, Aspi! I was always under the impression you were a normal everyday kinda person. Then it turns out you know the super-celebrities of Bollywood music! I better be careful with my comments from now!

Great write-up, btw! I'm looking forward to hearing the music :)

P.S. Vishal-Shekhar, Vishal-Shekhar, Vishal-Shekhar next!

Aspi said...

svr, I will work on it. But this Unforgettables tour has to get over before I can get a reply back I think.

Meanwhile, make sure you remain just as careless with your comments.

Aspi said...

tania, I know what you mean. Boy if Snoop wasn't on that Singh is King soundtrack, I'd be putting the whole thing in my trash can.

HM said...

Man, i totally dig this interview! nice style you have of asking questions. Very different from usual music reviews crap you read onother sites.
His answers about the songs make me wanna go out and actually spend money on this album.

Mind Rush said...

Well, well! Drift saab, kya scoop mara hai! Great interview.

I was curious about this film as I saw a preview recently, but this interview makes me want to connect with the music too. I am going to hold judgement about Farhan Akhtar's singing until I hear this album. (Hope it is not like Rahul Vaidya wanting to be a star and sing...)

Mind Rush said...

Also, given that the movie was a father-son effort (Akhtar aur Akhtar) also makes it special for me.
Will definitely be watching this film and listening to the music.

Anonymous said...

I just saw Rock On being played on B4U Music. It seems kinda dated...

Aspi said...

The movie or the music? I think the music is a deliberate throw back to 70s pre-glam rock.

In fact Zehreelay is precisely charming because it sounds like about the time Deep Purple were inventing speed metal.

ehsaan said...

hey aspi thanks for the interview it feels good to get all this feedback from our fans !!!! i think we purposely went for an 80's kind of feel for the film. though i love alternative music for me rock music is not complete without guitar solos which new rock and alternative are completely devoid of ( sigh sad state of affairs rock was about riffs , the guitar hero and the singer ) so we preferred to go the retro way !!!!

meena said...

Awesome Aspi, I just might have to ask for your autograph before you get too big :-)

havent heard it yet, but will in the next few days. always listen to the music you recommend.

but you know what this means right? you are one degree of separation from Judge Javed now :O and dare we hope just a couple from Himmesss?

Aspi said...

Ehsaan, thanks for stopping by. It was a pleasure having you here.

meena, kya - you guys need to stop teasing me. I think you'll enjoy the album *especially* any old time rock fans you may know (hint).

70s and 80s rock has undergone a revival recently. Some bands I've particularly enjoyed: Secret Machines, Revolver, Nine Black Alps.

So the sound is current again.

svr said...

Never fear, Aspi, careless commentary has always been one of my greatest virtues. USP, do they call it? :D

How about singers too? Like, say, Mahalaxmi? I, for one, want to know why there's so little attention paid to her voice texture at lower octaves -- and so much more to Himani's. (Though I suppose that is a question for music directors!)

Aspi said...

svr, since you brought it up: Mahalakshmi is a personal favorite of mine and one of the first I wanted to feature here. But she had a loss in her family recently. So we'll pray fervently for her during this difficult time and with any luck she will stop by some day.

She's one of SEL's favorites. And one of things I wanted to ask her was if she did anything special on Jhoom - her voice quality sounds terrific and different from what she had done before then.

m said...

stop teasing me you guys!

i might have a wee listen to the album whenever i can although i ain't a big fan of 80's hair metal..

and ehsaan welcome to the madness.. you should stick around we're a fun bunch.. i am the resident deranged loose cannon..

does anyone noe whats the movie about? bunch of guys in their 30's bored with their inane 9 to 5 jobs in the corporate world/wives/mundane lives decide to pursue their love for "The Rock"??

kinda like Jason Bateman character in Juno?

That would be great..

leera said...

The Drift moves on to the next level!!!

First off, super impressed with Judge Javed, for pulling out these lyrics. I was nearly fell off my couch when the 'mary jane ka packet' lyric came up! Love it.
Farhan Akhtar has the gravelly voice to pull off these songs and I particularly enjoyed the screams in the live version. The royaaaaaaaa was awesome.
The best song on the cd for me was zahreelay hands down. Totally impressed that best efforts were made to stay true to the 'Rock' in 'Rock On'.
Now if only they had made Prachi Desai sing......

I went and re-read the interview and agree with Hm - Very well written and informative.

I was surprised with "All songs were composed in five days". Is that normal for an album?

Never Mind!! said...

Just finished listening to the album.Pichele saat sinon mein is my favorite so far. Yeh tumhari meri batein comes across as a lovely travel song even before reading the descrpition. Dominique Cerejo reminds me a lot of Mahalakshmi. Cant wait to read her interview here on Drift.

Kanan said...

Aspi, can I have your autograph please? ;)

*stands in the line first with her autograph book*

Rest of the folks please make a line behind me like Teddy suggested. :P

Btw, great interview! Was it over the phone? If not, we want more details.

Gotta listen to the songs now. I like SEL music and Javed Akhtar's lyrics are nice so hopefully this will meet the same standards too? Never heard songs of Farhan though.

Kanan said...

Btw, just for the reference my comment was typed yesterday but I couldn't send it in so my autograph request was created earlier than Meena's request. Sorry, I get very childish when it comes to getting autographs of celebrities. :P

Aspi Ji,

I was wondering with some much going on in Indian politics right now, the trust motion and all, why dont you write up something on politics and our own funny politicians like amar singh and others.

Drift Memsaab said...

Aspi, with all your new found celebrity status, can I be called the new "star Memsaab?"

Gauri K, please move over!

j said...

Drift Memsaab, now you can start hanging out with your gal pals - Mrs. SRK, Mrs. Sanjay Kapoor, Mrs Arbaaz Khan and Mrs. Sohail Khan.

svr said...

Aspi, more wows re: Mahalaxmi! I'm sorry to hear of the loss in her family, and indeed, we'll add our prayers for her strength during this time.

My guess would be that her amazing voice quality in the Jhoom title song (that's the one you mean, I think?) is just the consequence of her singing that low -- after I heard that, I went back through some of her other hits, and I'd never heard her sing that low. I believe classical singers easily end up training their voices to go a couple of octaves below their starting octave, but can't gain that tonal quality for more than half an octave with on the high end. (at least, that's what my highly-biased non-professional sample of size 2 mentioned). It'll be great to hear what she has to say!

And yeah, include me in the autograph line!

Mind Rush said...

Oh, and don't forget the real star wife of Bollywood, Mrs. Ash Rai-Bachchan!

Mind Rush said...

But Drift saab, seriously, when will you bring us the Vishal-Shekhar exclusive?

svr said...

Drift Memsaab, me, me. Would love to be Gauri's personal designer. Whatever I do it will be better than what she has right now.

meena said...

Anon, I was listening to that Darbar release. I thought I had popped in one of my old 80s CD by accident.

Aspi said...

j, gg and pitu, the Drift Memsaab actually does need help with a thorny issue.

She wants to her hair to go from straight back to her natural waves and is looking for a low maintenance hairstyle that would make her feel at home professionally first and informally next. And she doesn't want to end up with the Amitabh Bachchan cut again.

Not that I loved her any less back then. But I'm just saying.

Pitu said...

hmm I dunno what to suggest- I have wavy hair but I am a wash and air-dry, zero styling products girl...

girlie girl said...

hm...I'm in the process of denying my beautiful curly hair and changing it to stick straight hair. my life depends on my blow-dryer, straightener and round brush. J, you got anything that can help the Drift Memsaab? Your fellow Chollywood-ians need you...

Aspi said...

Wow, the fate of fashion in our house now lies in the hands of j.

m said...

i am hardly an expert but whenever i want wavy hair, i put some mousse after towel drying my hair.. i use this one called kerastase elasto curl (my hairdresser recommended) then with my hand i push my hair into curls.. and also twist it with my finger.. then i let it air dry.. then i put this shiny light hair spray

when i'm going out and i want nice wavy hair fast i use my CHI, i take a portion of my hair then wrap it around my CHI really fast..then put some hairspray

it doesn't take long

i don't know if this is what she was looking for..

Amrita said...

Wooooooooooo!!! I've only heard a couple of songs from the album and saw the trailer but man, this is something I want to check out.

Kudos Aspi!

j said...

lol on the Amitabh hair. That was a fear I had when I use to have short hair.

what m said. Also Aveda has a Be Curly which works similar to the elasto curl.

I have also used diffuser to dry my hair. I cant stand the feel of wet hair on my neck. Diffuser works well when your hair is long. You end up with afro hair otherwise.

All of this though enhances the curls in your hair. If your hair is stick straight you are one of the lucky ones. Leave it the way it is.

When I straighten my hair out I can get very similar look, when curly my hair has a mind of its own. Hence I prefer straightening.

woo - Aspi's famous! Good one Aspi - I've only caught the one song on B4U, but liked what I heard.

Pitu said...

gg, nahiiiiiii! I lurves the curly hair- do not straighten! *jogs gg's memory of gorgeous curly-haired divas like Juhi, Sri, Mads, Kangana* My cousin has the most gorgeous Botticelli curls and she always tries to straighten them. So I always threaten to give her straightening iron to the kabaadewala ;-)

Uff! It's hard work being a celebrity's wife!

Such a disaster today! My pinky nail broke right after I got my $110 manicure...

Oops, gotta go... Gauri K is holding on line 1 and Paris H is calling on line 2....

girlie girl said...

I'm sorry Pitu! If it helps, I do it curly to work everyday just cause i'm too lazy to straighten it everyday! But it's the whole You-want-what-you-can't-have analogy! Plus, my hair is really frizzy which is one of the reasons I don't leave it curly, and I have yet to find that miracle product which makes my hair not frizzy and not-stiff (like the way gel does). I had the 'crispy hair' feeling once you put gel it in. If any of you fellow-drifters have any input on this, let me know!!

remember SJP in season 1-2 of SATC, my hair is that curly...so it needs to be either tamed or straightened...therefore, I spend almost $150 on a fabulous straightener!!

Pitu said...

Ahh so at work ppl get to see the yummy curls- cool! Oh, I love those kida SJP curls- Kangana has that too. As does my cousin. We call her Maggi noodles :-D I have wavy hair but I love curly hair and the only time I liked straight hair was on Mallika Sarabhai and Anooradha Patel. But I always believe in loving it all. So I keep my hair wavy, refuse to wear heels and also wear only lipgloss as makeup. I think Lin will be very proud of me ;-)

Kanan said...

Wow! lots of hair talk all from nothing but rock on! Our celebrities might get bored of it. :P Mine's all flat and I love wavy look. Every once in a while I braid my hair tight when it's damp after washing and in about 6 hours it turns nice and wavy for half a day, then flat again. I don't like doing anything to hair be it coloring or ironing of any kind. I feel it's more damaging than good so for me the natural look is the one and I like it. :) Once in a blue moon I like the two pigtailed look and I'd go for it. As for the Bollywood girls with great curls I like Urmila's (she has that beautiful lion-like mane) and Madhuri's. Juhi C had great wavy hair in QSQT. Btw, any of you girls put in oil regularly in hair? I have heard it's supposed to help a lot. I need to start doing that on weekly basis from yearly basis.

j said...

Actually I dont like Madhuri or Urmila's hair. Feel like they have been under the curlers too long. Reminds me of Dallas women hair.

When it comes to curly I like the more natural look - Kangana or Deepika's
http://www.highheelconfidential.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/deepika-padukone-katrina-kaifs-bday1.jpg

Dimple K. has beautiful hair also. I love changing my hair so straight, curly, color whatever I am in the mood for goes with me. Its hair after all I will get it cut if I fry it too much.

Kanan said...

J, looks like Kangana has Pinaz Masani kind of hair. I am not a fan of those on the other hand Deepika’s hair is quite nice. The layered hair look suits her.

I love Dimple's hair. I remember her from those ads in the 80s and 90s. Even today she looks absolutely gorgeous (DCH) and has great hair. That makes me wonder what the actual hair looked like for the yester-years' gals who wore those extra huge ugly wigs on screen.

Kanan said...

Oops! here's Pinaz Masani's photo.

girlie girl said...

I agree about Deepika and Dimple's hair...IT's so sad that neither one of Dimple's daughters have any of her genes! That woman is gorgeous!!

Dimple's hair or deepika's hair is what i think is low-maintanence hair. You can just let it air dry and it will still look amazing! i wish, i wish, i wish i had low-maint hair!! :-(

Aspi said...

And the opposite of Dimple and Deepika would be Himesh and Salman. Now that's high maintenance hair!

Aspi said...

Man, that Pinaz Masani looks like a female Ismail in that picture. But that's all I'll say. Given this whole Parsi community thing, I might well be dissin a relative.

Pitu said...

BTW this is tangential, but my new post on Bollywood men and my lil fashion rant is up on my blog!

But in order to do that and get an approach angle, I'll need to watch that comedy show she's hosting. Crap.

meena said...

Kangana does have hard hair to maintain. I would never want to have her hair. But it looks good on her stick thin body.

girlie girl said...

I actually like when she straightens her hair...like she did in that one movie...i think i was called "woh lamhe" or something? I think that girls is just really pretty no matter what. She just has a beautiful face...hopefully she wont do a string of bad movies and end up at the bottom of the barrell.

Pitu said...

She did a great job in Woh Lamhe. Just fab. I hate it when she speaks English though (even in Metro)- it's this odd pahadi accent plus lisp thing that just sounds weird.

meena said...

preity zinta pulled off this hair in DCH. she looked fine in places however this look can very easily go golliwoggy bad. not for the faint of heart.

meena said...

btw, j/m do your suggestions work for wavy frizzy hair or only hair that has distinct tendency to curl?

j said...

I have wavy hair also. Here are some suggestions from experience. Although I tend to straighten my hair out more often than not.

Air dry and dont use the comb when drying or even afterwards. Combing hair adds volume and that's not what you are looking for when your hair already has a built in volume.

There are lot of frizz-ease products. Aveda has an emollient, Fekkai has a smothing fluid, there is also frizz-ease. I usually use this when my hair is 80% dry. I dont touch it ones it is all dry.
When dry you can wave the annoying strands by either curling it with your fingers or using a curling iron and using some spray on it.

Now the caveat, I may sound like an expert but I have a 50% success ratio when I do my hair curly.

meena said...

thanks j, I use a flat iron fairly regularly but am trying to cut it down.

I have been trying the no combing and it does help. also, a final cold water rinse when washing hair. but I havent really experimented with hair products so maybe I will start with aveda
