Tracking Bollywood Hotness with Google Insights

At svr's urging, I decided to run Google Insights on the Bachchan parivaar. But then I thought, why let the fun stop here - there's more to be explored.

I picked a random bunch of themes. Here are the results - remember, keyword searches are dicey and numbers in one edition can't be used across another edition for comparison.

Superpower Family Edition
The newest member of the family generates the most search attention. And brings considerable power to the Bachchan family at just the right time - restoring its luster in the industry and putting it hot on the trial of SRK in the power sweepstakes.

TV Superpower Family Edition
OK, so Ekta is easily the superpower in this family, but boy Jeetendra's Google juice is a surprise. This is good news for Jeetendra, but bad news for Tusshar whose career has been a constant struggle from launch to present.

Superstar Actress Edition
We've known Katrina to be the new queen of the Internet. And in August with publicity blitz behind Singh is Kinng, she pipped Aish in overall searches. But Aish still maintains a four year lead over here. Its a battle worth watching. Kareena is the only other actress whose search graph continues to rise. Bips' and Preity's reflect stagnating online interest.

Starlet Edition
Sure there are many more to explore, but I picked the ones that seem to feature most prominently these days. Surprise! Neha Dhupia wins followed by Celina and then Sameera. What surprised me most was that Malaika barely generates enough interest to stay ahead of Koena. Perhaps that name is just too hard to spell.

Hot Young Couple Edition
Ranbir and Deepika have stars in their eyes - and those stars are each other. But who is the star the Internet wants to look for most? Turns out its not just badminton that Deepika whips Ranbir at.

Golden Pipes Edition
Music is important in Bollywood. And the singers are the face of music. Sonu Nigam - easily India's best singer of our generation - tops this list deservedly. More people seem to look for his songs. Shaan is close. And Sunidhi follow - very much in line with how the industry sees their ranking.

TV Show Edition
Which singing TV competition scores? Indian Idol has the most dedicated online fans. But doesn't SRGMP have the TRP lead? This disparity isn't a total surprise. Younger, urban viewers - more likely to do online searches - prefer Idol.

Most Popular Indian Edition
Finally, I decided to see just what would happen if we looked at Indians across multiple professions. Not just any people - but globally well known entities. Bollywood wins followed by Cricket. Then its Smarts and last, Politics.

While I was able to entertain myself for a considerable period of time with this exercise, it also gave me a terrific insight (just like it says it should). Its important to believe in something, follow your heart and stuff. So adding letters willy nilly to names to make the Number Gods happy seems like a perfectly reasonable personal prerogative. But on the Internet, Google is God and Google doesn't like numerically adjusted names.

So some phaltu Drift advice for Bollywood luminaries: name changes will result in lower search hits. And since most people in Bollywood are in it for fame - this bit of news is worth a pause before yet another spontaneous naamkaran.

let me say that Katrina probably got more search results because it is a more popular name... than say aishwarya or preity or kareena.. it doesn't necessarily mean "Katrina Kaif" was searched..

hey Hurricane Katrina! hello!!

m, great point. I forgot about that. I'll go look at that again.

You might have saved Aish's life again :)

Happy Independence Day to all Indians and Pakistanis[if anyone is around here]
and Happy Raksha Bnadhan too[if they do wish that way!!]

You should see the BAH spl episode of Dus ka Dum.i never liked Ranbir soo much before.he was such serious types...over-thinks about everything.his sense of humour seemed so good though he din't talk much.and he wasn't afraid at all to say anything that he wanted to.about whoever it maybe.and the way he gets soo excited when he dances.all the seriousness just vanishes.i din't see his movie and have no plans of seeing BAH but for the person he seemed to be i really wish he does well:)

Ha, Aspi, awesome!!! I think this round-up of popularity in Bollywood beats anything rediff throws around! :D

BTW, inspired by deep, I poked around a bit and discovered that Himesh Reshammiya is way higher than I thought he'd be. Rahman and Lata Mangeshkar are marginally higher, and Shaan and Sonu are much higher. But I didn't find anyone else!

Thoughts? Any other artists above Himesh? :D

Er, I meant, any comparisons rediff likes to make in ranking! I think they could dump their reporters in favour of google insight.

svr, good spelunking! The way people in the music biz have explained it to me: ARR comes first, the rest duke it out for #2.

If you asked me to rank the composers I'd go: ARR, Pritam, SEL, V-S, Himesh.

The singers would go: Sonu, Shaan, Sunidhi, Sukhwinder, KK.

Heck, I *really* need to work on that music power list. Keep running out of time :)

Ha, okay, I'll look forward to the list! In the meantime, I'll ask the obvious question: Shreya's not higher?

Aspi said...

If Shreya can build a significant reputation as a live performer, she'll climb up that ranking. Otherwise no.

Aspi, I for one am still puzzled. I poked around a bit on YouTube, and couldn't find any real issues with Shreya's live singing... Sure, she doesn't whip up the frenzy that Sunidhi does, but it's also an side-effect of the kinds of songs she sings, no? It's easy to get the audience crazy with Sajnaji Vari Vari. Not really with say, Barso Re... (Maybe the music power list will answer this too!)

svr, the quality of her live singing isn't an issue. Its the image she projects. Sunidhi's fun, bindaas image (not to mention huge list of item songs) gets her more attention on the stage. That is all there is to it.

I can't believe I've been around this place for like 2 days and I still can't spot any Shahrukh fans!

How disappointing.=[

Aspi, how do you feel about Shahrukh?Don't be diplomatic or anything.I won't be hurt even if you talk shit about him=]I'm a very understanding person you see:)

Anon, I'm a big SRK fan. It doesn't come across? Perhaps we make fun of people we are fond of a bit too much.

If I ran into Salman, Aamir, Hrithik and SRK I would get Salman's address book, sign Aamir as director, sign Hrithik as the star and dance with SRK.
