CSI FAIL!

This appeared in a newspaper that I used to work for - so it's name won't be mentioned. Apparently my beloved M. S. University is under siege. Someone has been stealing laptops, food and clothes from the hostels. The police are flummoxed.

Enter a rather famous "city based psychiatrist" who has cunningly picked up on the clue that the thefts have occurred in the girls' hostels to offer the following analysis:

"We find more kleptomaniacs among the female of our species due to their urge to own something. It is not a matter of being rich or poor, but it is generally an urge to get something at a specific time."

Making General statements is a very common and serious trait amongst most of Indians.
The Shrink could have used words carefully.
Any way No Fault of Aspi , the Board of Directors at our Media Company has recommended a 100 % pay raise.
Good Job even while on vacations !

Mind Rush might just be too embarrassed about the shrink kaum to comment :)

Does the poor doctor need to be needlessly criticized for stating an obviously correct fact ?
Read the latest article in the Authoritative journal of Psychiatry in the world - ASJ - In their results
82% of Kleptomaniacs in their study group were FEMALES.. so I do hope sanity prevails.

Hope Dr. Mind Rush reads DSM-IV 312.32

DSM IV btw is the bible of Psychiatry -

Prevalence
Kleptomania is a rare condition that appears to occur in fewer than 5% of identified shoplifters. It appears to be much more common in females.

So I do Hope Meena of the whaaat!! exclamation & Aspi of the shram of kaum do realise the error of their ways.

An apology would be befitting. ( not that the poor doctor would have any clue about him being featured in Aapro Aspi's blog.

Aspi's Readership Profile has a bunch of Neuroscience experts.

DSM is a Big Hoax that has names of anything and everything that goes wrong or can go wrong .

A Bible brought about by most organized Medical speciality that has ??? values !

Ek Mareez, kya research and link hai! Thanks! Hope your bimari - whatever it is - becomes door soon.

But this is a little like saying black people are more prone to crime because more of them are in jail, no? Its fundamentally flawed to take a sampling and generalize it thusly in a seemingly unrelated way.

In one my neighboring suburbs in the US the south side - which is less affluent - is prone to domestic disputes. The north side - more affluent - sees more cases of shoplifting. Turns out the north side also has more malls. So extrapolation becomes complicated, yes?

ek mareez,
from professionals I expect that they only comment on specific cases they have investigated and refrain from dikhaoing their knowledge by commenting on things they read in the paper :)

Now if only the 'poor doctor' had made the same comment tongue-in-cheek on Aspi's drift..tab aata mazaa.

Meanwhile great research. ex-journo?

A classic case of comparing peaches with oranges.. U are juxtaposing an irrelevant statement with a well researched ,peer reviewed article written by no less than 5 doctors in the definitive journal of Psychiatry ASJ , u think DSM IV the REFERENCE book of Psychiatry is a bunch of extrapolations ( Lol ! I pity the efforts of zillions of hours of those doc who compile that tome) just for the sake of being politically correct or defending your journalistic license.

Would love to to hear what your resident psychiatrist Dr. Mind Rush has to say about this debate ....

It could be true because females spend more time shopping and looking at others so when they see some stuff that they can't have that they feel they must have, they develop this bimaari.

I could be biased but I have seen more females in my life doing this than males so couldn't help agreeing.

Btw, when I say 'looking' I mean noticing the clothes/jewelry/purses/watches/accessories/whatnot on others.

the sad part is,even if the above statement were true..that there are more kleptomaniacs among females, there's little scope for help..

dear Mareez, please take a seat and a number....

Now, let me enlighten on the issues of DSM, klepto and MSU. Yes, the DSM in its various versions forms the backbone of mental illess diagnosis but it is not a perfect system. It underrepresents culturally diverse groups, and thus may only be applied to Indians with caution.

But in the case of MSU thefts, let's use the Scientific Method instead of the DSM. I see several errors in reasoning:

Error #1: Do not eliminate alternative hypotheses. Just because the majority of "girls" in the hostel are well off, you cannot assume that the thief is too.
Error #2: Theorizing about an observation does not make facts. Why more females suffer from klepto can be explained in many ways. Boys in hostels have NO clue where there stuff is kept, so they probably don't even know what's missing.
Biggest Error: Who decided it was NOT plain premeditated theft vs. kleptomania (which is impulsive and is associated with a rush or a feeling of high upon acquiring the items)?

I say, this Psychiatrist is a Fail!

Now then, Mr./Ms. Mareez, what's your problem?
