Kidnap and the burgeoning career of Imraan Khan

Sure Imraan Khan had a few things going for him this year.

He is nephew to the celebrated Aamir, who produced Imraan's debut starring flick Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and launched a canny publicity blitz for the same. It was an association Imraan happily and wisely accepted without false pretense.

He had a terrific hook in his movie courtesy of Abbas Tyrewala: movies that depict companionship before romance continue to drive female audiences into urban multiplexes.

And A. R. Rahman produced one unstoppable song that gave the media campaign a rousing kick start.

On Kidnap, due October 2, Imraan follows up his golden debut with what appears to be a big risk. He plays a bad guy who spirits away Sonia (Minissha Lamba) in order to settle an old score with her father Vikrant Raina (Sanjay Dutt). But on closer examination, its not such a big chance to take. There are several reasons.

First, Imraan needs to establish himself in multiple genres. And the best time to do that is early in your career before you get typecast. Its super tough to grow your audience laterally after your first few years. So the timing is right.

Baddies playing good guys has been done multiple times before in Bollywood - remember when Pran, after terrorizing the entire movie-going population of India went all goody two shoes on us in Zanjeer? But of late in an against-all-odds career, Shahrukh has shown that playing baddie can open up possibilities.

If Kidnap flops, Imraan will escape the pointed finger. After all, wasn't the production team nuts to cast a hot, romantic, youth property in such a bizarre role? If Kidnap is a hit, Imraan goes two for two in his career - worth a half or full crore increment in his asking price.

So it is that recognizing Imraan's red hot career right now, the marketing team of Kidnap has centered all its promos around him. Sure Sanjay Dutt shows up to establish the Ransom-like story line for us - but Imraan is clearly the star here.

Imraan has safer choices coming up. He stars in Luck - an action movie with Kamal Haassan's multi-hyphenate daughter Shruti. And he's known to have replaced Ranbir Kapoor in Aamir's home production Delhi Belly. Both are in production.

Indeed, Shruti appears to be interesting. If she can put herself on the same career track as Imran, she'll probably do really well.

Imran Khan would be so effin hot if he just did something bout his eyebrows...

I dont think the young people (tweens) will go for this role. My nieces simple adored him in JTYJN and am sure will not warm up to him in Kidnap. Although if there is a hero (Jackie Shroff's movie) like angle to the movie which ends up showing him in a romantic light that might work.

wow, that Shruti Hassan looks so much like her mother.

never mind!! I still haven't seen Rock On!! But its been so beaten to death that I'll have to think of some angle to comment on when I do end up seeing it.

I'm not able to digest the casting here....first Minisha looks too old to be against Imran(ditto in Bachna Ae Hasino), and to be Sanjay Dutt's daughter.

And, also Imran will look like a kid in front of SD.

Aspi said...

Stone, that is exactly how the movie will play out, no?

Imran is SD's son from a dalliance. Minissha is his half sister. Imran seeks justice from SD for neglecting his "other" family.

So he grabs Minissha and the kidnap becomes an analogy for sibling hostility. The ransom demand sparks an analogy for alpha male hostility between father and son.

Aspi,

My thoughts exactly. Hero types never play real villians. They always have a heartbreaking back story that justfies (or explains) their "villainy". In the end, he will do the right thing and the audience will end feeling sorry for him and identifying with him. (yawn). This movie looks like a copy of some recent American movie.

I don't like his look here at all :-( I think it's because of that awfully applied tan foundation. This is kinda greasy. Yuck. Better makeup would have helped :-( Anyway, is picture mein Sanju baba usko kha jayega. I adore Imran but I don't think he can hold his own against the charismatic Dutt. And Minisha..eww

Minisha is young enough to be paired against Imraan, right? She has the fair skin problem. They always age faster than their tanned counterparts.

Aspi, are you making up that story or is that the story of the movie?I would rather like to see a love angle between the kidnaper and the kidnapee.

Pitu, agree with you. Sanjay is such a powerhouse of performance. Hope Imraan can stand up to him.

j, I'm just making up that story. If I had an unconventional film that's how I would play it.

Its hard to sell an audience on a women falling in love with a man who kidnaps her, ties her up, grab her by the throat and then sings love songs.

On the other hand, Bollywood filmmakers are capable of anything.

Yeah, but taming the bad boy has been a story in many a movies - Hero that I mentioned earlier, Khalnayak with Sanjay Dutt.

Reminds me of the Javed interview on Koffee that I have talked about earlier - the first time he presented a screen play to a producer, the producer said "Kahani mein risk hai". When he asked what it was, pat came the reply "Yeh kahani pehle kabhi bani nahin hai"

'a man who kidnaps her, ties her up, grab her by the throat and then sings love songs.'

Stockholm syndrome makes me sick to my stomach. Also, Pinjar had same theme na?

J: Hrithik actually surprised me in Mission Kashmir 'coz I had thought the same at the time. But Hrithik did a great job.

THAT SOUNDS SUPER HOT!!!

but the fact that miniisha is the girl, ewww... they should have got someone decent looking

I watched JTYJN, and at the risk of offending the PYTs here, the first thought that came to my mind was that Imran looked so much like Donald Duck...I mean the way he kept pushing his lips out all the time.Well, maybe that was supposed to be a pout.but somehow I kept looking at his face and thinking of Donald Duck:).
Even i think that Minisha looks too old....she was supposed to be an 18 year old in Bachna....looked older than Deepika too. Pity.
