For anyone new here, welcome the the Drift. Here is how Linkology works: if you find anything funny, touching, entertaining or just plain worth sharing, leave us a link in the comments section with your take on it. I'll put it up here and on the front page as soon as I can and we can take a look at it, amuse ourselves and discuss it here.

That vogue cover is seriously disturbing. It almost seems like an anti-vogue comercial, kind of like the ones Peta does.

Pitu said...

J: You mean the spread, right? Coz the cover has a Pinocchio-like photoshopped Ameesha Patel on it.

Actually, I didn't have a huge problem with it TILL I realized they haven't named the people who posed for the pics. Because clearly, unless you're a rich, snooty fashion model, you don't qualify as a 'person' and are merely 'that kisaan'/'woh gaonwali' as opposed to having a name we'd like to know :-/

Even doggies in Hollywood and Bollywood movies are named. Heck, the pigeons in Maine Pyar Kiya were named in the credits :-/

Plus, it totally looks like they took a picture of these poor people and just photoshoped them Ameesha-style to show them wearing a Fugly Fendi Bib or that stupid umbrella!! It is just absolutely disgusting!

The Indian Vogue is pretentious and full of snobbery, but are other Vogue editions any different? Americans may have a much better standard of living, but how many can afford $2000 shoes on a regular basis?

megan said...

okay off topic cuz i aint got no links but today i decided to look at my university page in orkut! HAHAHAHA omg! the fobs at my college are having a BALL.. they type in a rly random English... FOBTASTIC

some boy posted a topic "be my fren plzzzzzz i juzzz came 2 *insert city name* n have no frend n want som frendzz plzzzzzzz" aww LOL as tempting as that offer is i won't be reaching out, who am i mother teresa? nuh uh

i stalked their profile and this dude posted so many pictures of him and his friends with HOODIES on..and he has some issues with the "foreign born girls" apparently we ignore these nice boys and have forgotten our "culture".. DANG

and this dude has a picture of cute RABBITS in his profile and is a member of such great MANLY groups such as Romeo and Juliet, Heer Ranjha and "i love britney spears" LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

j said...

Thanks Pitu, yeah I did mean the spread. Although that Ameesha cover is also quite disgusting :)

girlie girl said...

i agree j...she looks nothing like herself...not to mention all the photoshoping has given her a Pinocchio nose! hehe

Pitu said...

You know, she looks very pretty in that b/w three-quarters profile of hers (even with the bizarre nose). Methinks they uthaoed Soha Ali Khan's nose and chipkaoed it on Ameesha lol.

GOD, SRK looks ridiculous!! When is he going to realize that he is no longer in his 20/30s...he is NOT suitable for these types of roles anymore. SOmeone needs to break the news to him ASAP!!

Anonymous said...

lol at the shahrukh photo..if bangs and tight fitting t shirts would make someone look younger, then sekhar suman would look like teenager too..
-Bee

j said...

lol, on shekhar suman. He is the most hedious looking guy these days and he was'nt that bad when he first came on the scene.

I am surprised with SRK's look. Isn't the movie kind of a lolita story - older guy falling for a much younger girl?

Anonymous said...

hehe himesh can give sekhar suman good competition on being hideous..hair transplant – sekhar – check, himesh – check, possible face lift – sekhar – check, himesh – check..
-bee

Aspi said...

Suman has a transplant. Himesh - now that we know wears a wig - has probably a bad hair transplant.

Suman 1 Himesh 0

girlie girl said...

also, who's more in denial about their REAL age...Himesh, Suman?! I think Himesh takes this round looking at the 12 year olds he gets to act opposite of him!

Anonymous said...

hehe sekhar - 1, himesh -1

Bee

Aspi said...

Tremendous! We should do a Shekhar vs Himesh post soon :)

girlie girl said...

ooh...great idea Aspi! There are a ton of things to talk about when it comes to the two of them. We already have hair covered, age, we can talk about visible inappropriate cleavage, dressing like a teenager...we've opened up a lot of possibilities here!

Pitu, terrific link! Although I wouldn't call Wadkar out of work and that mention of his last song in 2007 is just plain wrong. Why he just sang a bunch of songs on Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi. But I'll say this: boy, he's stereotyped.

Brave Behl planning Dron part II even before the the first one's release.

http://sify.com/movies/bollywood/fullstory.php?id=14760316

Aspi said...

He can say what he wants - but that sequel ain't getting made unless Drona rakes in the cash.

Even if Drona has been presold at a profit to distributors, if it flops no one will buy any sequel from Eros - thus killing chances of any extended financing.

Anonymous said...

Hahahahah Aspi used the word "ain't"!Hahahaha omg hahaha. How cute:)

Aspi, you areee theee besttt.Keep rockin this blog homie.

Aspi said...

Since you mention the word rocking, you should definitely check out the next post - one of my favorite um, rockers. Hope you like it!

Pitu said...

Aspi: I agree. Wouldn't call Wadkar unemployed and anyway he is a far superior singer compared to these chaps. Stereotyped, true. But beautiful classical adaakari. Um, Shabbir Kumar??? Not so much :-p

I don't have high hopes from Drona, Bwood just doesn't do sci-fi/fantasy well. Besides, Goldie Behl (Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai) ain't no great shakes as a director. Besides, aren't superheroes supposed to be fit? Bachchan Jr needs to lose some flab pronto! No way am wasting $10.

j said...

Announcing sequels (that may never get made) before the movie is released is a new marketing ploy for bollywood.

I am getting a little overdosed on Priyanka, Katrina and Deepika. Is there no other bolly heroines left?

Aspi said...

I was watching Oop Cha last night and I realized of all the Bollywood heroines since Aish, Priyanka has the best sense of what looks good on her - be it a dress, an expression or a move.

Her Drona-Redux is a rare misstep but otherwise she always looks good in the movies.

If this movie thing doesn't work out she would make a killing running a finishing school for model-types.

j said...

Priyanka is looking amazing in the dostana promos. That is a tough one since she is sharing screen space with eye candy John.

I think with the tour and the crappy movies and the ridiculous blogs and public comments, i'm just tired of seeing the Bachchans. They need to go away for a while...and take Mr. Singh with them...

Pitu said...

Amen GG!

girlie girl said...

sorry Pitu, looks like they're not going anywhere!

I like how the story mentions all the Bachchans and the picture only shows the two most important people of the family! hehe

Aspi, you should do an interview for this. I always wonder how much these guys get paid for their appearances including Mr. Gore and what the carbon footprint of the show is.

Come on, I am a cynic. If you really cared about global warming you would be living like Ted Kazinksy.

Aspi said...

busy bee, thanks for the link. Rock On!! is such a polarizing movie. A number of people, whose opinions I respect a lot, have trashed it. And of course a lot of people have loved it.

I think they are both right. I can even reconcile the picture in my head - but if I can ever articulate it, I'll do a post about it.

Anon, great idea. I will see if I can dig up someone.

j said...

Whether you like the movie or not I have to give Farhan kudos for making movies that are very well scripted and are not copies of some hollywood movie.

I haven't seen this movie yet. Will wait for the official DVD. (I refuse to go to the movie theatre and hang out in a desi circus like environment and hubby refuses to watch copies that are not officially released by the producers). So will have a more informed comment when I watch it.

TZP is India's Oscar entry over Mumbai Meri Jaan, A Wednesday, Jodhaa Akbar and Rock On..

Lin said...

To whatever committee is responsible for picking the Oscar Entry,

Why even bother sending an entry? It's one thing to talk about how the Oscars aren't needed to validate Indian films. (And to an extent, I agree, I myself like the other SAG and film festival awards myself.)

Nevertheless,

Just don't bother sending an entry, if you're just going to limit yourself to some Mainstream Bollywood film. Only in a few cases does that work out well (Lagaan at least made it into the final cut).

Lin said...

P.S.

By the way, I don't know if this was mentioned here.

But there is a U.K. Fox Searchlight movie that is getting strong Oscar buzz already--Slumdog Millionare, which is set in India.

Lin said...

P.P.S

I haven't seen the film, but I don't think it will get an oscar. Just saying it had a light oscar buzz.

Aspi said...

I haven't seen Slumdog yet but I'm glad Anil or any capable Bollywood actor got a chance to act in something other than drivel. In any case, his agent has been working overtime to get him publicity for it. And given how obsessed the Indian media is about impressing The Phoren, its an easy story to sell.

Lin said...

Aspi, I'm just going to ask it here.

In JJWS,did Abhijeet sing Khwaja mera Khwaja at one time? I'm curious cause I want to make sure he did before I go off trying to find the clip.

Here you go Lin,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0B9BdjGUrTg

Also the Rahul Vaidya Piya Haaji Ali is quite good

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYKrXuBpX4g&feature=related

But my favourite is Raja Hassan's Piya Haaji Ali (it also comes with an extra dose of Himesh)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZcYpsB08uM&feature=related

Lin said...

J, thank you for the link.

I did a general search a couple of days ago and I didn't find it. So I appreciate the link. :)

Piya Haji Ali.

I really like Irfan's version the best. Even though technically the others may have been better than Irfan. There's something soothing when he sings it...more so than the other versions, which are also good.

Aspi said...

Just a quick update because I didn't necessarily want to do a post about it. But if you were into Indian Idol 3, there is a spin off band (Parleen, Abhijit, Bleater urf Suhit and Chang) called F4.

They played Vadodara on Sunday and afsos I found out about it too late to go catch it. Otherwise much fun would have ensued. In any case, I sent Chang a note afterwards and he said he loved playing the show.

There are some YouTube clips of them playing live I think.

j said...

Also caught Indian Idol 4 audition round on Sony recently. Parleen, Deepali and Chang were omnipresent through out the show. They were interviewing cadidates outside and doing their hosla-afjayi.

Funny, he sure is a charmer :)

Aspi said...

Bee that link is hilarious. ToI had a much more acerbic take on it. But the core of the story is pretty consistent.

Hope Mr. 10% can charm something out of the Pakistani economy in the same way. If you have some spare cycles, more about Zardari's challenges here.

Lin said...

I got skeeved out by that.

Would he ever dare to say that to a really good looking man in such a setting?

Would he ever dare to say that to a female Pakistani politician or someone with high publicity?

Jack-ass.

And the Hug part. Ugh.

Aspi said...

Lin, good point. I read somewhere that he turned it on in his meeting with Manmohan as well, referring to him as the Father of Modern India.

girlie girl said...

Why doenst he just tell people to drop their trousers and kiss their a$$ while he's at it.

That article was hysterical bee! The hug part totally grossed me out...and i like how Sarah Palin didnt say anything to him but just "Smiled"...SHOT DOWN!! hehe

Wah, wah. Girlie Girl - what a charming name. I can't believe what a gorgeous name this is. How do you do it? Sarah Palin is nothing compared to how lovely you must be.

Uske charm ke bina Asif kuchh bhi nahin. I use my charm to get my country what it wants. So this is proper use of resources.
